In Japan, there are some car manufacturers that offer disabled-friendly equipment and features right out of the factory. Some even give the community an opportunity to drive on their own. Daihatsu holds the top market share in the mini welfare vehicle market.
However, as you can tell by the word “mini”, those models are mostly Kei cars.
The brand has just recently expanded beyond that market with the introduction of the Daihatsu Thor Seat Lift. Its tall and roomy design is fitting for the disabled as the rear has ample room to easily fit a wheelchair.
Adding to the convenience is the front passenger seat with seat lift that can be operated by a wireless remote control. This allows the passenger to easily exit and enter the car.
The Thor Seat Lift is available with 2 variants – the X grade and the G grade. Both variants are powered by a 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated 1KR-FE 3-cylinder engine (69 PS/92 Nm) paired to a CVT automatic.
The OKU-friendly Thor is available with front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive on both variants. Prices start from JPY 1,745,000 (~RM 65,000) and Daihatsu also offers a few options including seat covers.
Features like the seat lift have been retrofitted in some cars in Malaysia but these are done in the aftermarket. The only other market that offers these disabled-friendly features straight from the official dealer is Indonesia with the Toyota Sienta Welcab. Could this feature be one day offered officially for the Malaysian market?
