Tesla cars have a torque sensor on the steering wheel. In normal driving with a driver’s hands on the wheel the car senses a slight resistance to the corrections made by Autosteer. This is how the car decides whether a driver is holding the wheel. In a recent software update, Tesla has made the car more aggressive in requiring hands on the wheel. The car gives visual and audible alerts to the driver if it doesn’t detect any driver interaction. I was driving limp-wristed today and Autopilot shut down in about 3 minutes. Without intervention at that point the car would have turned on the emergency flashers and slowed to a stop. That said, it is conceivable that someone could fall asleep, through their hand positioning continue to provide resistance to Autosteer, and fool the car into thinking they were still interacting with the steering wheel. On a well-marked freeway a driver usually doesn’t have to intervene with Autopilot and more often than not the car could go hundreds of miles on a controlled access highway without a collision. On the other hand, a collision could happen quickly. An attentive driver is an essential component of the Tesla Autopilot system. The new Tesla Model 3 cars have a camera aimed at the driver, and one presumes that in the future it will track eye movements to get more definitive information on whether the driver is attentive.
In general elctro hydraulic power steering has rack and pinion but along with this there is one more arrangements for reducing drivers effort. The arrangement includes a simple hydraulic arm which is connected with rack and in the same direction as that of rack And a torque sensor on steering column which sensor the steering torque provided by driver. So as driver rotates the steering wheel torque sensor sense that and send signal to ECU which control the amount of fluid to be flow in hydraulic arm If driver steer the steering wheel faster more current is send by torque sensor and more fluid is send to the hydraulic arm which move is same direction of rack. As without power steering the rack was moving only by drivers effort but now rack is also moving by hydraulic arm thus it reduce the driving effort. This is electro hydraulic power steering :)
'Driving steering torque' is not a safety feature. It is actually a problem associated with front wheel drive cars. In such cars, when the accelerator is pressed, the car may pull to the right or left. This is not a good thing because it reduces the handling quality of the car. 'Electronic rollover mitigation system' is a safety system that works along with ESP (electronic stability program). When a car makes a sudden turn, then the roll sensor detects that and applies brakes to the wheels and adjusts the suspension and even can adjust the steering to stabilize the car.
This video is one of the best I’ve seen explaining how power steering works, including in detail the torque sensor. A hydraulic system isn’t very different in principle, though obviously quite different in detail. Essentially the torque sensor is a collar that fits across a split in the steering column, where an outer sleeve can rotate separately from an inner sleeve. The relative motion of the two drives a sliding collar up and down depending on the direction steered, and that position is picked up inductively. The concentric steering shaft has a mechanical limit to it, so that if the sensor fails, you can still steer.
