Used car dealers in Malaysia experiencing record-high sales in July 2020

Looks like car manufacturers are not the only ones that are currently enjoying a surge in sales. Used-car dealers are also reporting record-high sales in the few months since the Recovery Movement Control Order was put into effect. According to the Federation of Motor and Credit Companies Association of Malaysia (FMCCAM) president Datuk Tony Khor, the surge in demand for used cars is so good that the scenario is “simply too good to believe”. The surge in vehicle sales is believed to be spurred b

Following Friday’s announcement by the Prime Minister that locally-assembled cars will be exempted from paying 10 percent sales tax while imported vehicles will see the rate reduced by half, many car companies are swamped by calls from their dealers and stakeholders asking for details on what’s the next step. Without the necessary paperwork, the Accounts/Finance division at car companies are unable to proceed or give any answers.

2020's new car sales (TIV) in Malaysia is lowest in 13 years, 529,514 units

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has announced its tally for total new car sales, better known within the industry as Total Industry Volume (TIV), for year 2020. A total of 529,514 new motor vehicles were sold in 2020, down 12.4 percent from 2019. The cause of the downturn is of course due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated MCO restricting normal economic activities. For two and a half months between March and May 2020, no cars were sold as showrooms were not allowed to operat

Car sales are falling worldwide, global recession imminent?

New car sales are falling in 18 out of the top-25 largest car markets and analysts are not expecting results for the rest of the year or even the next year to be any better. The first six months of 2019 saw 44.75 million vehicles sold worldwide, 6.8 percent lower than the same period last year. Of greater concern is that China’s auto industry is reporting negative double digits, slowing by 12.4 percent. China is the world’s largest car market, selling close to 30 million cars every year and for

Despite losing 3 months of business, Malaysian used car sales hold steady in 2020

Even though the country is still undergoing a pandemic, used car sales in Malaysia saw steady growth in 2020. This is despite the fact that used car dealers were severely hit from March to May due to the movement control order (MCO). According to the Federation of Motor and Credit Companies Association of Malaysia (FMCCAM) president, Datuk Tony Khor, the used car industry had only about nine months of business this year as a result. No 10% drop in car prices despite 10% Sales Tax exemption, here’s why

As you already know, the government has announced that all new locally-assembled (CKD) passenger cars will be exempted from paying the 10 percent sales tax starting 15-June until 31-December. Imported new cars will be given a 50 percent discount on sales tax, meaning that sales tax is still applicable, but at a lower 5 percent rate. However, this doesn’t mean that the prices of new CKD cars will drop by 10 percent. Most cars only saw a reduction of between 3 to 6 percent. Why is that so? The sim

Will 400,000 German car industry employees lose their jobs by 2030?

Earlier this year, the NPM (National Platform Future of Mobility) predicted 400,000 car industry jobs in Germany could be gone by 2030. The NPM is a research agency funded by the German government. DW reports that the main reason behind this prediction is the rapid transition from internal combustion engines to electromobility, or electrification, accelerated by the EU's 2030 climate targets for the transport sector. Electric cars require 6 times fewer parts. Hence, far fewer workers are needed
