2021 Toyota Corolla Cross’ TSS 2.0 detailed; better choice than the HR-V?

The 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross has just been launched, with 2 variants to choose – 1.8G and 1.8V, priced from RM 124,000 (with 50% SST discount) to RM 134,000 (SST included).

Equipped in the range-topping Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V is the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0) suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), which encompasses:

• Pre-collision System with Pedestrian Detection
• Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
• Lane Departure Alert
• Lane Tracing Assist
• Automatic High Beam

Pre-collision System is Toyota’s speak for Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). It utilizes a camera as well as a millimeter-wave radar to detect possible collisions and slow the car down to avoid or reduce the impact.

With Pedestrian Detection, the system is able to determine possible collision with crossing pedestrians as well as cyclists, and automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not brake in set time.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is, you guessed it, Adaptive Cruise Control. Both the camera and radar are also used to detect vehicles in front and determine their distance. The system helps maintain a pre-set distance from the vehicle in front.

Unlike the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control in the Toyota Corolla Altis which works at all speeds, the system in the Corolla Cross only works from 30 km/h to 180 km/h. So no stop-and-go function here unfortunately.

Lane Departure Alert is as its names suggests, a warning to alert the driver when the vehicle veers off its lane. This helps avoid the consequences of unintended lane change. Lane Tracing Assist keeps the car centered in its lane when Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is activated and lane markers are visible.

Automatic High Beam reduces glare for other drivers by automatically toggling between high and low beams. It uses the camera to detect headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles.

On top of Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, the Toyota Corolla Cross also features Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). Both use audible and visual warnings to alert the driver.

Its closest rival, the Honda HR-V, doesn't feature ADAS in any variants. The range-topping RS variant is equipped with Honda LaneWatch Camera, but we'd hesistate to consider it part of the ADAS umbrella.

The Toyota Corolla Cross is currently fully-imported (CBU) from Thailand. Locally-assembled (CKD) models are expected to arrive at the end of this year.
