First unveiled Auto Shanghai 2021 in April, MG Motor has confirmed that the striking MG Cyberster electric vehicle (EV) sports car will be going into production, which also includes right-hand drive (RHD) versions.
That said, no timeframes have been confirmed yet, but we understand that extraordinary reception is among the catalysts to the car's production plans. The company shared that they received "over 5,000" registrations on their MG CyberCUBE crowdfunding platform.
So what is the hoo-ha around the Cyberster? For one, it marks a return to form for the brand, as sports cars were their forte all those years ago before they were bought over by state-owned Chinese company, SAIC Motor.
That's apparent in its low-slung, swoopy silhouette that looks like a Hot Wheels car. It's aggressively-styled, with choice cues like the Union Jack-patterned tail lights, LED strips on the sides (termed Laser Belt), and trick 'Magic Eye' headlamps that 'opens' when turned on. They're no pop-ups, but still cool either way.
Befitting its fancy exterior is the cool interior. There's a sharp, one-piece dashboard, lots of carbon-fibre bits, leather seats (only seats two), and a digital instrument cluster as well as controls along the centre console.
Whether or not the RHD model makes it here still remains to be seen. In our region, MG is active in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Phillippines. The HS and ZS SUV pair were spied in Malaysia numerous times, but there's no updates yet about the brand's situation here.
