While Malaysia waits, 90% of Japanese Toyota Corolla Cross buyers bought Hybrid variants

Two weeks after the Toyota Corolla Cross was launched in Japan, the company has received more than 13,500 bookings for the new SUV. Out of that figure, 90% of the bookings were for hybrid variants.

That’s even more impressive than Thailand, as 85% of Thai buyers went for the hybrid variants.

In Japan, Toyota offers seven variants of the Corolla Cross, with the hybrid variants limited to just three. At the heart of the hybrid variant is a petrol-electric 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE engine (98 PS, 142 Nm) mated to an electric motor (72 PS, 163 Nm), producing a combined system output of 122 PS (peak power for motor and engine happens at different rpm, so you can’t sum the two up).

Depending on variant, power is routed either to the front wheels or all four wheels.

One feature unique to the Japanese-market Toyota Corolla Cross is the AC100V/1500W accessory socket – something that’s highly-appreciated in an earthquake-prone country like Japan, as the hybrid Corolla Cross can double as a powerbank on wheels.

Closer to home, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has begun teasing the imminent arrival of the Malaysian-spec Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid via the Toyota – Live Hybrid teaser page. Expect the model to be launch in two weeks’ time.
