It was a Toyota year again in Japan as the it celebrated becoming the world’s best-selling carmaker by continuing its dominance in its domestic market. Data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) shows them with the top four best-selling models in the country and total of 8 models in the top 10 for 2021.

Toyota’s top four comprises the Yaris, Roomy, Corolla and Alphard. Bear in mind that the list excludes Japan’s unique kei vehicles and clumps together models with a common name in them. For an example of the latter, that would see the list bundle the Yaris and Yaris Cross as well as combine the Corolla and Corolla Cross.

The Yaris accounted for 212,927 units while the Roomy is lightyears behind at 134,801 units. Not too far behind in third is the Corolla at 110,865 units before the Alphard barges in with 95,049 units.

Totalling 553,642 units, the fantastic four accounted for a staggering 27 percent of sales for the year. Meaning over a quarter of the new vehicles sold in Japan came from just four Toyota models.
The total industry volume (TIV) was 2,015,610 units, of which 1,190,642 of them were from Toyota. That’s a staggering 59 percent if you were wondering, which we’re sure you were. Though once again, we've to remind you that this excludes kei vehicles.

To put things in perspective, every other new car sold last month in Japan was a Toyota. In fact, more than one out of every two vehicles sold in Japan in 2021 was a Toyota.
Making the first non-Toyota appearance on the list is the Nissan Note in fifth with 90,177 units. Its closest rival the Honda Jazz (Fit) ranked 12th, with 58,780 units sold.
Joining it in completing the top 10 are the Toyota Raize (81,880 units), the Toyota Harrier (74,575 units), the Toyota Aqua (72,495 units), the Toyota Voxy (70,085 units) and the Honda Freed (69,577 units).
