Hachi-roku set for Malaysian return, UMWT confirmed to launch all-new 2022 Toyota GR86 soon

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) will be launching the all-new 2022 Toyota GR86 very soon, with the company's latest press release confirming that a new GR model will be among its next launch.

The company's press release announcing Season 5 of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival also mentioned, "Toyota and Gazoo Racing will be introducing several GR and GR-Sport models soon, and will be paired with the organizing of GR driving clinics, experiences and activities for the respective owners to equip them with the necessary experience and skills to be able to safely take full advantage of their vehicle’s potential."

Toyota's GR series models include the Toyota GR Yaris, GR Supra, and GR86 - of the trio, only the GR86 have yet to be launched here.

Models bearing just the 'GR' moniker are thoroughbred performance cars, while those with 'GR Sport' badges are lightly-tuned versions of regular models in Toyota's line-up, like the Vios GR Sport, which is the first ASEAN-manufactured (CKD Bukit Raja) vehicle to wear a GR badge.

Closer to current affairs, its equally-new 2022 Subaru BRZ twin will also be coming to Malaysia sometime this year, which could provide clues on the GR86's price point.

Prices for the BRZ start from RM 229,245 for the 6-speed manual variant, to RM 239,245 for the one with the 6-speed auto 'box. Traditionally the Toyota has always been pricier here, and following rough calculations based on last-gen prices, expect the GR86 to be circa RM 260k to RM 272k.
