Toyota has been quite busy these few months coming off the launch of the Corolla Cross, the refreshed Hilux, and the Yaris Cross. There seems to be nothing stopping the Japanese giant and the world’s largest automotive company.
According to Indonesia’s Autonetmagz, Toyota has filed a trademark for a brand-new model name called the BZ. The trademark has been filed through the US Patent Office on 22 May 2020.
What does this mean? The BZ name isn’t new to Toyota though. It was used in a few variants of the Corolla, most notably the E100 generation.
Models like the Corolla Levin BZ-R or the Corolla BZ-Touring were high-performance versions of the E100 coupe and station wagon respectively. One theory is it could be used on a performance trim of the Corolla in America like Honda’s Si.
Another theory we found speculates the BZ name isn’t for a performance variant of the Corolla, but rather on a sports car.
With the production of the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ ending and plans on the way for a new (Japan-only?) successor in 2021, perhaps the BZ name will be on a high-performance variant of the 86, according to Creative Trend.
The BZ name is also trademarked at the Japan Patent Office on 8 June 2020. This could also mean the BZ-spec might be a Japan-only variant. Until an official announcement by Toyota is made, we won’t know whether the BZ will be above or below the GR Sport.
