Less than 2 months since Toyota debuted the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla, a Japanese publication has claimed that Toyota could be applying the GR treatment to the Toyota Corolla Altis next.
According to Goo-Net, Toyota could be revealing the GR Corolla Altis as soon as mid-2023, powered by the same turbocharged 1.6-litre G16E-GTS 3-cylinder petrol engine found in the GR Corolla.
In the GR Corolla, this engine does 304 PS and 370 Nm, higher than the GR Yaris (261 PS, 360 Nm). Power is expected to be routed to all four wheels via the GR-Four all-wheel drive system, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

Goo-Net also speculated that the GR Corolla Altis will be based on the global Corolla and not the Japan-market model, the latter is shorter and narrower than the Altis we’re familiar with.

By adopting the global Corolla Altis platform, Toyota can share most GR bits between the sedan and hatchback, including drivetrain and exhaust bits. This should, in turn, reduce development costs.
If and when the GR Corolla Altis comes to fruition, expect it to square off a host of high-performance models, such as the upcoming Honda Civic Type R, Hyundai Elantra N, and Subaru WRX.
