Level 2 autonomous driving brings the Proton X50 on the same page as a Tesla

The Proton X50 is safer than a BMW X1? Yup, it’s true, and you can read it here.

Part of why it gains that reputation is because it comes with Level 2 Autonomous driving. 

What's this 'levels of autonomous driving'?

In short, this picture. 

Basically, Level 0/1 cars are most common right now, and Level 2 technologies are still creeping in. We're still a long ways away from Level 3, 4 and 5 autonomous driving.

Who decides these? The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International. 

What makes it Level 2?

Two main functions - Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) and Auto Park Assist (APA), qualifies the X50 as Level 2 automation according to SAE J3016. 

So for one - the ICC is something you won’t even find on the Proton X70.

It also has lane centring assist, which helps the driver keep the car in the centre of its lane. This system works on speeds up to 150 km/h.

Meanwhile the X50’s ACC allows the X50 to follow the car in front from 30 km/h to 150 km/h, and can also follow when coming to a stop. If the stop is less than three seconds, the X50 can automatically resume acceleration. 

Additional functions in the ACC include an overtaking assist mode (accelerates to prime for an overtake when the driver indicates) and curve deceleration control. 

Auto Park Assist

Another cool feature the X50 comes with is Auto Park Assist - which essentially makes this B-segment SUV the cheapest car that parks itself. It does vertical and parallel parking and we reckon it’s a feature that’ll see much use in our country.
