All-new 2021 Subaru BRZ unveiled - 2.4L NA, 231 PS/249 Nm, 6-speed manual

Subaru has unveiled the all-new 2021 Subaru BRZ at the Thermal Club Raceway in California, U.S. It carries on the traditional sports car formula with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout with low weight and low centre of gravity.

The all-new Subaru BRZ is 30 mm longer and 10 mm lower than its predecessor, coming in at 4,264 mm long and 1,310 mm tall. Wheelbase measures at 2,575 mm (+5 mm) long.

Kerb weight is yet to be announced but Subaru says it will be under 1,315 kg, which is about 50 kg more than before.

The hexagonal grille is set lower and wider than before. The side vents are functional, serving to reduce drag by ducting air from under the hood and fenders. The released air is directed to a side sill spoiler that creates downforce at speed. A small fin at the back of the rear-wheel arch also assists in airflow for added stability at speed.

The 2021 Subaru BRZ features a new and more powerful 2.4-litre horizontally opposed engine, making 231 PS and 249 Nm of torque. The 2.4-litre naturally aspirated engine redlines at 7,000 rpm and delivers a 15% increase in torque by expanding the displacement, strengthening intake/exhaust efficiency and reducing friction.

Accompanying the new engine is either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 6-speed automatic gets a new Sport mode, which allows for more rapid downshifts with automatic throttle blipping and utilizes yaw sensors to hold the transmission in a lower gear during hard cornering.

Utilizing knowledge and techniques learned from the development of Subaru Global Platform, the new body delivers a 60% increase in front lateral bending rigidity and a 50% increase in torsional stiffness. The stiffer body contributes to improved steering response, more nimble handling and better traction.

The front suspension features MacPherson-type struts while the double wishbone rear suspension system is said to provide outstanding bump absorption to enhance tire grip over varied surfaces.

The only way to deliver tofus.

The use of aluminium for the roof, front fenders and bonnet minimizes the weight increase of the larger engine. Models equipped with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheel features Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres measuring at 215/40 R18.

Inside, the all-new Subaru BRZ features a new interior, save for the steering wheel that is taken straight from its predecessor.

There's a 7-inch digital instrument cluster that customizable to show a host of driving information such as water temperature or g-meter.

The 8-inch touch screen infotainment system features Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity.

Safety wise, models equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission features EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. The functions include pre-collision braking (AEB) and adaptive cruise control.
