Something with good ground clearance, all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, the ability to tow a trailer and enough space in the back for gear. Based on the limited information, I would recommend one of the following: Jeep Wrangler Subaru Forester Toyota FJ Cruiser Nissan Pathfinder There are others, but you probably get the idea. An SUV is obvious, as opposed to a passenger car, but one which is actually designed for occasional off-highway use is important. That’s a consideration when selecting a suitable vehicle. Also don’t discount getting a 4x4 pickup truck with a camper shell.
My wife and I have a 13’ Scamp camping trailer, a fairly basic model. We pull it with a Subaru Outback H-6. We left NW Oregon in the fall and drove down the Oregon coast and into the redwoods in California, camping and hiking all along the way. Then we turned inland north of San Francisco and drove across California and down highway 395 along the east face of the Sierra Nevada range. When we got to Lone Pine we drove to a high trailhead where we parked and then backpacked to above 11,000’ and camped by a lake. Then we day hiked to a 12,000’ pass. Nights were cold, well below freezing, but the people and the bugs were gone. Then we drove east to the White Mountains and visited the bristlecone pine forests there, some of the world’s oldest living things. From there it was east into Utah where we camped on Cedar Mesa. We backpacked down Bullet Canyon into Grand Gulch for 3 nights visiting ruins and just relaxing. Then we parked the camper along a rutted dirt road on Cedar Mesa for 2 nights where we saw 2 people in 3 days. We hiked down Owl Canyon and back. We left Utah, drove back across Nevada and stayed at a fantastic restored hotel in Tonopah, the Mizpah. Really a cool place. Then on to Carson City to visit my wife’s parents for a few days then back via Mt. Shasta and I-5 to home.
Wow, where do I start? Okay. Here’s five of my dream cars, in no particular order. . 1966 Ford Mustang (electric conversion) I’ve always had a soft spot for Mustangs, especially the first generation. The fastback is cool, but I actually prefer the more balanced lines of the hardtop coupe. Ideally, I’d like to add a full electric conversion and upgrade the safety features as well. . 2016 Audi R8 e-tron The electric version of Audi’s flagship supercar, the e-tron is a rare beast but a magnificent one. It has the power of a Tesla with the handling of an R8, and 200 miles of range to boot. If money were no object, I’d definitely like to track down one of these (although, if I couldn’t find one, a Tesla Roadster would be a fine consolation prize). Also, Tony Stark drives one. So there’s that. . 2004 Subaru Forester (camper conversion) This one would be my road trip machine. I’d strip out the whole interior except the dashboard and driver’s seat and turn it into a mini-camper with a bed, fridge, microwave, sink and some kind of toilet. (Yes, I did get the Subie-camper idea from Richard Hammond in the Top Gear Africa Special.) I might also fit some slightly more rugged tires, a push bar and a luggage rack on the roof. Then I’d be all set to drive off into the woods and not come back to civilization for a good long while. Again, I’d like to do an electric conversion as well. . 1982 Knight Industries Two Thousand (Pontiac Firebird) I guess it’s time to admit that I’m flat-out obsessed with Knight Rider, and have been since I discovered it several years ago. So, of course, if I had my dream garage, somewhere in there I’d need to have a KITT replica…with fully working artificial intelligence and all the spy gadgets, obviously. . Alice (2012 Nissan Leaf SL) All the dream cars in the world can’t replace Alice, my beloved Leaf. She’s been with me through thick and thin, and has never once let me down. I love this car, and whatever I end up driving in the future, she’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
To answer your question: I have no idea. Look in your owners manual; there will be information there regarding towing capacities. In my 2011 Forester manual there’s ten pages dedicated to trailer towing. Also look at the section regarding “Loading your vehicle” The crucial item to your “small camping trailer” is how much it weighs and how much stuff (weight) you intend to stuff into it. Understand the weights typically given for towing capacity are ,gross, weights …as in Gross Trailer Weight (GTW), Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). You’ll need to learn what all these *,restrictions,* mean. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the ultimate “red line” you are not to exceed …’less you just have a death wish. Read up on how that’s all figured out …it’s in the manual. For instance: if a vehicle is rated at 1000lbs GTW that means the ,*total,* amount of weight towed cannot exceed 1000lbs. And that includes the weight of the trailer. So if your trailer weighs in at 300lbs you can only load it with 700lbs of stuff ….even if the trailer is rated to carry 1200lbs. As it so happens, my example is spot on for my ‘11 Foz; it has a GTW of 1000lbs. I suspect it’s the same for your 2015 …,but look it up,. All this sounds kinda complicated but it’s not. You probably won’t come close to any of the restrictions but you do need to be aware of them and educate yourself about them especially when shopping for that “small camping trailer”. _______________________________________________ -Trailer Brakes: For my Foz, if GTW is going to exceed 1000lbs (or whatever your limitation is), then the trailer *must* have trailer brakes (so says my manual, check yours). With trailer brakes I can pull up to 2400lbs of GTW (or whatever your limitation is). Pulling a trailer with trailer brakes typically means you must install a trailer brake control module in your Foz. The module must be adjusted properly to work the trailer brakes in tandem and in harmony with the tow vehicle brakes. I have pulled trailers (with my GMC pickup) that have trailer brakes and dialing in the brake controller is essential …and a bit finicky. If you do choose this option because your little camper blows the 1000lb GTW rating, then score a controller that responds to inertia …not just the brake light switch. I would highly recommend the Tekonsha line of inertia brake controllers. Check out e-trailer dot com for some great videos on everything from hitches to controllers; they also have good prices on stuff as well. I have a Tekonsha controller in my truck and, once dialed in, works great. -Maintenance: Towing puts added stress on the transmission, the engine and brakes. The transmission will run hotter, the engine will run hotter and the brakes will get hotter stopping the whole thing. If you intend to tow on a regular basis then you’ll probably need to shift your Foz’s service intervals to the “Severe Use” timetable. If you have the CVT transmission, I would highly recommend you have a transmission fluid cooler installed; this is cheap insurance in keeping the transmission fluid from overheating and damaging the CVT. The owners manual may not call for a cooler but that’s gonna be little comfort when you toast your transmission because the fluid was consistently overheated. Also, plan on changing the engine oil and filter more frequently. Expect a shorter life span on your brakes …pads and rotors; consider upgrading the brake pads to something a little better than the stock pads. -Towing: If you’ve never towed a trailer before I suggest you think about what you’re doing and the ramifications …both before and, especially while driving. You’re ultimately adding a 1/2 ton (1000lbs) to the weight of the vehicle that must be stopped. Physics works and your Foz will *not* stop nearly has robustly as it does without the trailer. The more weight you put in the vehicle (not to exceed its GVWR) the more mass the stock brakes have to deal with. Going downhill simply adds to the challenge.
Yes. Their are a variety of experimental aircraft that have been powered by automotive engines. Most common are VW, Subaru and Corvair engines. The Peintanpuhl air camper (another experiential/ home built) was original designed to use a Ford Model A engine. I’ve seen a Velocity at AirVenture that was powered by an aluminum small block Chevy. At various times Mooney Aircraft tried to make aircraft with automotive engines Forest Crosley and then Porsche. They did get certification but ended up recalling all units they made and replacing the engines with normal aircraft engines.
