What's the Toyota Vios' fuel consumption in real-world driving?

The 2019 Toyota Vios is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder Dual-VVTi engine with a codename 2NR-FE that produces 107 PS and 140 Nm of torque. It is linked to a CVT with 7 virtual ratios. Toyota claims improved fuel consumption compared to the previous powertrain, but by how much? Read on to find out the 2019 Toyota Vios' fuel consumption.

The current powertrain combo was first introduced in the updated Vios in 2016, which replaced the ancient 1NZ-FE VVT-i engine with a 4-speed auto that was already present in the first generation Vios.

As this writer has had the privilege to test the 2019 Vios and drive a 2014 Vios (third generation) on a daily basis, we thought we’d compare both the Toyota Vios' fuel consumption.

Toyota Vios fuel consumption

On the same test route done in the Honda CR-V and Proton X70, the 2019 Toyota Vios achieved 6.8-litre/100km based on calculation between distance travelled and fuel pumped. Although the onboard trip computer indicated 16.9km/litre which translates to about 5.9-litre/100km.

Although it hasn’t been tested on the same route, the 2014 Toyota Vios' fuel consumption consistently averaged around 7.2 to 7.7-litre/100km in mixed driving conditions. It rarely dips under 7-litre/100km unless most of the range travelled is on the highway.

On highways with the old powertrain, the engine sits at a slightly vocal 2,900 rpm at 110 km/h. This makes the cabin ambience less calm and ultimately penalizes fuel economy.

In comparison, the engine in the 2019 Vios sits at around 1,900 rpm at 110 km/h and is barely audible, further enhancing the already quiet cabin. It also means reduced fuel consumption, especially on longer journeys.

While the CVT loses some of the direct feeling that the 4-speed auto has, particularly when starting from a standstill as it can feel bogged down at times, there’s no denying its benefits when it comes to fuel economy.
