More and more there is a sense that the small rock first thrown by Toyota and Honda is slowly turning into an avalanche that can no longer be stopped. The ongoing pandemic has changed the consciousness of many regarding the environment and their impact on it. What’s more, vehicle sales globally in the past few years have shown that sales of EV continued to go strong, and in 2020 it rose by 43%.

Nissan Leaf

Perhaps the most recognisable EV in our market today, the Nissan Leaf is actually one of the modern pioneers for electric vehicles not just in Malaysia, but in the entire world. The hatchback is now in its second generation (codenamed ZE1) and it is priced at RM181,263.

BMW iX

BMW’s EV introduction to the Malaysian market is the strangely cute BMW i3 and back then it was only available as a range extended version with a ‘smoll’ 647 cc engine that only has 2 cylinders. The road tax for that car costs a similarly cute RM42. A fully electric BMW i3s followed but it has also recently left the official model list.

Only the new BMW iX xDrive40 is available at the moment, with the BMW i4 coming soon. The fully electric SUV starts at RM435k.

MINI Cooper SE

The iconic MINI Cooper also has a full electric powertrain. When the MINI Cooper SE was launched in Malaysia in 2020, all 25 units were snapped up within a month, even though they started RM218,380. 15 units in First Edition trim (RM20k more expensive) was quickly brought in after that, and they too were similarly sold out, sharpish.

MINI has no plans to bring in more units of the popular hatch with this electric powertrain, but it goes it certainly does go to show that there a segment of their market that are both stylish and environmentally conscious.

Porsche Taycan

With Porsche’s introduction of the Taycan here in 2020, and with no other real players in this space, the German carmaker has conquered the luxury section of the EV market here in Malaysia. At launch, there were only 3 variants available but since then many others have been added because the global and local reception of the Porsche Taycan has been excellent.

Hyundai Kona Electric

This fully electrified crossover from Hyundai is the cheapest EV you can get in Malaysia today. The Hyundai Kona Electric starts at RM149,888, and when it was launched in late November 2021, the first batch of the electric crossover was quickly sold out within a few weeks.

Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric – coming soon

While the Volvo XC40 Hybrid is made in Malaysia and then exported to other markets, the full electric version of the crossover, the Volvo XC40 Recharge Full Pure Electric, is made in China. This EV crossover is already available in Thailand, while Volvo Malaysia’s website says this vehicle is coming soon.

Let’s conclude

At the moment, full EVs are still relatively expensive, and unattainable to most Malaysians. Even the relatively affordable one, the Hyundai Kona Electric, starts at RM150k. A full locally made. affordable EV may be in the works, but from the looks of it, such a vehicle is still years away, but we digress. Sales of full EVs will only continue to rise, and the price of these cars will continue to decrease. Leaving internal combustion behind is only going to get easier as time goes by.
