Here's what we know about the 2023 TNGA-C Toyota Innova Zenix hybrid so far

  • 5 variants - 2 petrol and 3 hybrid powertrains
  • FWD, monocoque TNGA-C platform replaces RWD, ladder-frame IMV chassis
  • Highest variant could cost more than Made-in-Japan Voxy

From its humble beginnings as a modern successor to Indonesia’s “national car”, the Toyota Innova has seen success beyond the archipelago and the upcoming third-generation will be the most revolutionised generation since it replaced the Toyota Kijang.

Innova Zenix name trademarked in Indonesia

With its launch rumoured to be in November 2022, Indonesian media have been busy posting speculations and leaks for what is to come for the next-gen Innova. As we’ve previously reported, the all-new Innova could be called the Innova Zenix which could see the long-running Kijang name dropped in Indonesia.

Not only that, maybe even the Venturer name which is used on higher variants of the Innova in the archipelago could also be dropped for the next generation. Our colleagues at AutoFun ID had previously reported that there could be 5 variants offered for the Innova Zenix which included 2 petrol and 3 hybrid variants.

No more 6-speed AT in the Innova Zenix

The diesel variants could be dropped and replaced by hybrid powertrains. The manual transmission and 6-speed automatic are also expected to be dropped and the CVT gearbox could be the sole transmission offered.

Both the petrol and hybrid units share the same 2.0-litre displacement with Indo media speculating that they would be Dynamic Force units. The Innova Zenix is also speculated to cost between IDR 410 million to IDR 620 million (~RM 125k-189k).

That is a very steep price to pay for an Innova considering the outgoing generation is priced between IDR 369.6 million to IDR 527.2 million (~RM 121k-160k). Not only that, but this speculated price makes the top-of-the-range Innova Zenix cost more than the Toyota Voxy which is priced at IDR 582.5 million (~RM 177k).

Still, these are merely speculations but the price hike is inevitable given that the Innova Zenix would be a completely different model than what it’s replacing. Aside from the addition of a hybrid powertrain, the Innova Zenix will sit on the TNGA-C platform which is also used on the Corolla Cross.

Current outgoing Innova shown

Gone is the rear-wheel-drive (RWD), ladder-chassis IMV platform and in goes a front-wheel-drive (FWD), monocoque chassis that Indonesian media speculates offers a lower ground clearance than the current outgoing Innova. Switching the layout could also see the Innova Zenix have a third row that folds into the floor instead of to the sides.

Besides the enhanced powertrains and platform, the Innova Zenix is expected to be loaded with all kinds of features. Some of the expected standard features include an electric parking brake (EPB) and a 360-degree camera so at least a touchscreen infotainment system is also available on the base Innova.

The real extra features come in the higher trims which according to Indonesian media include:

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power tailgate
  • Electric captain seats with footrests
  • 10-inch touchscreen head unit
  • Rear seat entertainment
  • Multi-colour ambient lighting
  • Digital driver display

As for safety, only the top-of-the-range Q Hybrid is said to feature the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) ADAS suite which apes that of the smaller Veloz. In Indonesia, only the Veloz Q variant gets TSS and Q is the highest trim.

With new features, perhaps it’s time the Innova breaks out of its poor man’s Alphard image. If the prices are to be believed, the Innova Zenix might as well be the humble man’s Alphard instead.

Oops... Something broke.
