Toyota stays ahead of Honda as Malaysia's best-selling non-national brand in 2022 with 100k units

Following Honda Malaysia’s announcement as the No.1 non-national passenger car brand in 2022, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has released sales figures for the year. A total of 100,042 Toyota vehicles were sold which puts it as the best-selling non-national brand in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Honda sold over 80,200 units in Malaysia in 2022 which should place it behind Toyota. However, if you exclude the Hilux (27,198 units) and the Hiace (390 units) from Toyota’s numbers, Honda by technicality retains its non-national passenger car brand title.

Including Lexus, UMWT sold 101,035 units in 2022 which was a 40% increase compared to 2021 (72,394 units). This was despite challenging market conditions as well as supply chain issues which affected the auto industry globally and locally.

“We are delighted to have been able to put smiles and deliver happiness to so many of our customers across the nation, and thank each and every one of them for their support,” said UMW Toyota Motor President, Ravindran K.

“I also wish to express our appreciation to all our staff, dealers and business partners who overcame a challenging year. Together, we will continue to keep our customers happy and ensure that quality and service will always remain at the highest levels,” he added.

Besides the Hilux and Hiace dominating the pick-up truck and one-ton van segments respectively, Toyota also led in the light-duty wagon segment. 3,432 units of the Toyota Fortuner were sold in Malaysia in 2022.
