Indonesia is on track to be this region’s electric vehicle (EV) hub, as the archipelago is finalizing agreements with EV marques like BYD and Tesla to invest in EV production there.
Speaking to Reuters, coordinating minister Luhu Pandjaitan said, "All the biggest (electric) car makers in the world will invest here. BYD Group, the number one in the world, Tesla, the number two, Hyundai and so on, they are all finalising deals with Indonesia."

Because Indonesia has an abundant supply of nickel, as nickel is a key component in lithium-ion batteries, the archipelago has banned exports of nickel. EV manufacturers that have their sights set on Indonesia’s nickel supply are required to set up assembly facilities there.
Back in March 2022, Hyundai’s production facility began production and is the first production facility outside of Korea to assemble the Ioniq 5.
