After Ford, Volvo adopts NACS port to access Tesla's Supercharger network in the US

Volvo Cars has become the first European carmaker to enter into an agreement with Tesla, opening access to Tesla's expansive Supercharger network across the United States, Canada, and Mexico for current and future electric Volvos.

Last month, Ford Motor Company also reached an agreement with Tesla Motors that will provide Ford electric vehicle (EV) customers access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the US and Canada.

Back to Volvo, upcoming Volvo models from 2025 onwards for the US market will be outfitted with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port, ensuring compatibility with the charging infrastructure in the region. 

This partnership grants electric Volvo drivers the convenience of over 12,000 fast-charge points in the Supercharger network and the number is expected to grow. This is in addition to the existing fast-charging points accessible to Volvo drivers.

Existing owners of Volvo's fully electric models, including the XC40, C40 Recharge, EX30, and EX90, will soon be able to locate charging stations through the user-friendly Volvo Cars app. Starting in the first half of 2024, an adapter will enable them to utilise the Tesla Supercharger network, enhancing the charging options available.

Future Volvo vehicles equipped with the NACS charge port will also have the flexibility to continue using the Combined Charging System (CCS) with the help of an adapter provided by Volvo Cars.

Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, expressed the company's commitment to simplifying the electric driving experience, stating, "One major inhibitor to more people making the shift to electric driving is access to easy and convenient charging infrastructure."

This collaboration with Tesla aims to overcome this hurdle for Volvo drivers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, supporting the broader goal of sustainable transportation.
