peugeot 208 issues Q&A Review

Do you think it is possible for France to stop selling any kind of car besides electric ones?

Do you think it is possible for France to stop selling any kind of car besides electric ones? Of course they can, in time. From a consumer perspective, once electric vehicles reach cost parity with internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, which should happen in 2020–21, there’s no reason why they can’t replace ICE cars. They’re cheaper to run, they’re cheaper to service and for the vast majority of journeys, they don’t need any more infrastructure than a standard 220V single phase power socket by the parking place or in the garage. Cities will, however, need to invest in on-street charging such as the projects to add slow EV charging to street lights, considering the amount of people who live in apartments without parking in trench city centres. France’s car manufacturers have a good range of EVs both currently on sale and in the pipeline and France is leading Europe in small EVs with the highly successful Renault Zoë are likely to continue doing so with the latest version as well as with the new Peugeot 208 EV. The biggest issues France and the other European countries with similar plans will face is the oil lobby looking to protect their revenues and the car dealers who will miss the service revenues that ICE cars provide them. If the French parliament can maintain the political will in the face of those two lobbies, they should be able to execute their plans to phase out the sale of new ICE cars.

Why don't electric cars have an electric motor inside each wheel?

Not an engineer. Have studied EV motors of all types for a year or so relative to specific solution for cars and light trucks. The wheel motor/hub motor folks have been working quite hard to position themselves for the 1.2B EV’s to be manufactured over the next 25 years or so. Hyundai, Protean, Magnax, Schaeffler (Ford), GM and perhaps, six other firms are offering wheel motor solutions to car manufacturers. I understand the unsprung weight issue and have learned the basis for eliminating the above concept from electric vehicles. That is not, however, the case. One firm is marketing wheel motors for transport buses and perhaps, this is where we will see an early application. Magnax is offering an axial flux motor as a solution that can be applied as a wheel or axle motor. From a control and flexibility standpoint the potential of just putting 2 or 4 wheel motors on a vehicle is too good to pass up. From some research, I offer that the primary motor suppliers are going with the “axle motor” featuring the EV drive unit and reduction (gear box) integrated as a single piece. These include Bosch, Siemens, ZF and others. Although not immovable, these firms represent some billions in development and market presence amongst the car manufacturers. I don’t find the design objectionable except that it is a chunk of metal that is as close to an internal combustion engine and gear box as they could manage. They should make it belch smoke too. The wheel motor, in some approaches I’ve seen, suggests significant efficiency gains along with allowing car designers a wider range. Another example of the above is the “skateboard” battery pack configuration. The only problem with this design is that batteries are getting smaller and cooler with two solid state battery factories under construction as of today. The point is, that last year, you were “safe” designing your car around a large, heavy battery pack. This will not be the case in three years and smaller current EU EV’s are no longer skateboard based. Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa. As you can see the batteries (yes, they are only 50 kwh) are under the seats. My point is that tech in the automotive sector is changing more rapidly than ever before and if they can make money selling cars with hub motors they will. There is simply too much at stake.

The Peugeot 208 driver’s window only goes up in 2" at a time. Why?

Neil, there must be some sort of resistance in the mechanism for this to happen and when it is overcome the window glass jumps the 2 inches you mention. This resistance may be in the drive mechanism not being squarely applied or resistance in the guide tracks. First, try lubing the window guide channels with some spray silicone and run the window up and down a few times. Take notice if the glass is moving up and down squarely and not cocking. If it is not squarely moving there is an issue within the drive mechanism and will need to be inspected for damage or internal resistance.

Which BMWs and Mercedes models were extremely reliable?

Here is a real time analysis of the cost to maintain any cars as per all manufacturer. Honda is #1…. but Mercedes is #1 for German cars. This is the bible on the dependability of every manufacturer over 5 or 10 years depending in your extended warranty service contract . Companies that issue those extended warranty service ae the ones paying the bills. They have the data on the results per car manufacturer. I ,perform Quality Control ( QC ) and audit on cars being serviced with defects, All manufacturers with a new model are loaded with issues. some are small and some are major as Mercedes had in 2004 -2008 with the New 350- 3,5 liters V6. Some problems are so small but the outome may be removing and dismantling the engine to repair the bad plastic guide for the timing chain or malfunctioning camshaft adjustment solenoid on the Mercedes V6-350. Toyota, for example, has a high average cost of repair but quite a good index rating - which means that the car fails infrequently but when it does you will be in for a larger than average bill. What happens if after a while you don’t like the car you bought or leased few months ago?

We had such an issue. We went to pick up my wife’s new Peugeot from Motormall Jersey Channel Islands. The sales staff initially ignored us and then the salesman got into an argument with a service advisor to a pont that my wife told them to stop arguing in front of a customer This resulted in my wife taking an instant dislike to the car. After a few days it was clear that the Peugeot 208 was far inferior to the 206 we had traded in. We stuck it for 11 months but clearly the car had to go. We contacted the finance company only to discover the dealership had lied to us on the terms of the loan. Result was we just told the dealership to take the car back or we would report them to Trading Standards / Peugeot ( We actually by this time were speaking to one of their directors because the sales staff based in Jersey Channel Islands simply lied to us at every point ). The whole experience has put of buying a new car. Where we live is awash with cheap, reliable clunkers and there is actually no need to spend more than two weeks pay on a car to get you from A to B

Will Tesla eventually dominate the global EV market?

No. It is a market leader in the US but there are now many small cars from European makers on sale. The Vauxhall Corsa, the Peugeot 208, 2008 SUV are available now. VW has the Up, Golf and Passat as full electrics, and there are many more due this year. These smaller affordable cars are the big market world wide. outside of the US, Teslas are premium sized cars, bought by first adopters and executives, just like the electric Jaguars and BMW’s. the compact electric is not new, the original A Series Merc was designed from the outset to be all electric and that was introduced in 1997… in fact its initial issues with handling stem from the fact that it was designed to have underfloor batteries and when it was built as an iCE car, the CoG was too high…

What is the cheapest car (make/model) to insure?

Hey Peter, do you have a selection to choose from (ie trying to decide which might be cheap to insure from three or four models) or are you after an overview? The ,One Call Insurance website, has a few articles which will help, and although you may not be a student as in the first article, the vehicle are still some of the cheapest to insure: Top cars for students What affects the price of your insurance? Some models include: Renault Twingo Volkswagen Up! Suzuki Celerio Ford Fiesta Skoda Citigo Dacia Sandero Hyundai i10 Nissan Micra Peugeot 208 Fiat 500 When it comes to used or second hand cars, don't think that because a vehicle is cheap that automatically means the insurance will be cheap. Older vehicles come with their own set of issues (maybe the brakes aren't as efficient as a newer car, or it doesn't have an immobiliser etc.) that can bump up the cost of it's insurance. Essentially, your looking for a newish, safe, practical car (VW, Ford, Audi etc etc.) with a relatively small engine (1,000 to 2,000cc). On top of the vehicle choice you as a driver have a huge impact on the cost of your insurance. Another option could be ,black box insurance, (or 'telematics' insurance). This is increasingly an option for drivers who do few miles and are happy for their driving habits to be monitored. It's a good way of keeping track of your insurance cost and if it's too much you can drive fewer miles, avoid peak times and avoid driving at night to help keep costs down. So, to recap, stick with: Safe Reliable Popular model Smaller engine Fitted Immobilser/alarm And you should find the insurance is less than a 10 year old sporty convertible with 2 seats and a 5,000cc engine.

What would motivate you to buy a Tesla electric car in 2020?

What would motivate you to buy a Tesla electric car in 2020? 1., It would be a good local charging infrastructure where you can charge an EV almost everywhere (like Netherlands has) - this would be the biggest motivation. Richard Petek's answer to Which country has the best electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure? Amsterdam, Netherlands. Source: ,Plugshare.com 2., Of course it is the purchase price of good EVs like Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. I know that those cars pay off themselves with lower charging cost and significantly less maintenance, but it would take about 15 years for me since I don’t drive a lot. But on the other hand I don’t want a car with a small battery wehre I would need to make annoyingly many charging stops to get somewhere. One stop every 2 hours is excellent, one every 1,5 hours is somewhat OK, one every 1 hour of driving on a freeway is simply an annoyance too much. 3. Range., Range isn’t really an issue anymore. Any car that has an EPA range of 400 km (250 miles) is OK - for those who don’t know it, this is the range at approximately 90 km/h (55 mph). At freeway speeds of 120 km/h (75 mph) this drops to 300 km (roughly 200 miles), in winter this drops to 250 km (160 miles). Since nobody drives from 100% to 0%, it actually requires charging stops every 150–200 km (100–130 miles). While for some people this might be a problem, for me this is already OK. Of course, a bit more won’t hurt either, so a Model 3 / Model Y Long Range is even better at that point. 4. Rapid charging speed, That’s the point where most EVs differentiate. Teslas are great, all charge at 120 kW and more, some go for a short time to 200 kW or even more. Even the cheapest Model 3 SR+ can briefly go to 170 kW. No current competition does that - with the exception of the extremely expensive sports car Porsche Taycan (which is, by the way, the most inefficient EV on the market) and the quite expensive Audi E-Tron, which is fairly inefficient too. Teslas really have no competition, so that’s the point where Model 3 and Model Y really shine. For those who want to nitpick, yes, Audi e-Tron is a competitor, but it has significantly less range. And it is expensive. The only non-Teslas might be the new kids on the block, the ,Peugeot e-208, and the ,Opel Corsa-e,. Both are in the B- / supermini segment which should supposedly charge at up to 100 kW. If this is true, they should be an interesting smaller alternative (mostly for the European market), if not, they are just another marketing miss. We’ll see. Last note:, just a few days ago has the Ionity rapid charging network significantly risen its charging prices - to EUR 0.79 per kWh (including VAT). ,IONITY - WHERE & HOW Luckily there is Tesla which charges on its Supercharger network significantly more reasonable prices, on average only 40% - 50% of it. ,Tesla Supercharging Tesla shows the way that the only way to really go electric is - Tesla. Everybody else just shies away its customers.
