Such machines that ran factories had to measure 2000 DC microvolt thermocouples + scads of other signals from cables 1000ft away via slow mercury wetted relays & sleepy supersensitive amplifiers before digital conversion sequentially into the computer. Guys wrote the Process Algorithm formulas whilst brilliant women engineers stayed relatively clean programming. Turning number crunched digits into analog electric commands over 100s of cables especially to fail-safe Set-Point Controllers, the computer thereby ran virtually entire factories or other applications. Bulk memory was huge tape decks, with 8k to 0.131GB virus-free main memory invariably a big fast rotating magnetic drum sporting many read-write heads all over. Systems like ours also had a 4-16k fast arithmetic small cube core-memory of micro-magnetic doughnuts that only Mexican women could wire-weave. Boggling was the number of processes automatically controlled by adapting basically the same computer type, including those for which I was directly responsible like: ,Philips Petroleum, complete trailer system I designed to check that computer works OK on one facility before trying on another. ,Hudson & Manhattan, railroad, giant bridge toll & Panama Canal systems were evolving. Also Concrete & Steel mills plus Nuclear Electric Stations with nationwide Power Dispatch, & 13-week TV Station Programming including salaries... My pride was as 1962 ,TRW, Project Manager age 27 of world 1st Los Angeles Computer Traffic Control from smoggy City Hall. Computers for Moon shoes were designed & the entire trips programmed entirely by mt hero – a brilliant lady who died recently aged 101, ,my hero who left nothing for the crews to do except fix faults., Space-mad as ,Sydney Uni, student often corresponding with ex-V2 German (later ,NASA, head) Wernher Von Braun & still having one letter, I conceived the basic Shuttle with all rocket stages firing simultaneously (my bigger rocket keeps topping up smaller ones with same fuel before it drops off) - rather than serially - that could have enabled orbiting years earlier. Sadly he said, "Sorry Pat, we're too far down ,Apollo, tracks". I spent breathtaking 1964 time at ,Marshall Space Flight Center,, Huntsville trying not to 'rubberneck' at reclining Booster's 5-story diameter, or at clouds forming under amazing tall hangar ceiling,!, Just missed meeting Wernher at his home. ,NASA, treated me well: 1st Class Champaign flights, huge limos to breakfast, Washington DC ,Hilton, starlight dinners & frequent naughty shows in nearby Baltimore.. No, as perhaps the 1st Aussie into deep Space work, I never trusted rockets enough to Astronaut train. Uni Physics partner did - only saved when a previous ,Apollo, firestorm cancelled his trip,! In fact, 1959 project peaked pride at age 25 by inventing a fist-size external-ionizer Satellite Mass-Spectrometer (with ,Consolidated Systems Corp, who made big ones) to measure tenuous space gases for ,Ranger, & ,Mariner, hard or soft Moon landings. So unbelievably precise was the amplifier that it could detect a few 1,000 atoms/sec providing its 10million-megohm feedback, discreet micro-valves & switches were assembled in unheard of 1959 clean rooms. My related Patents enabled the ,NASA, contract, & I felt quite touched from Corporate's standing ovation, despite only previous year USA arrival,!, Salary soon quadrupled especially when I called myself ‘Electronics Engineer’ or ‘Engineering Physicist’ rather than a Physicist job title in government or Universities. Instead of electronic control cabinets, I had my friendly team adapt an amazing 1971 single-card ,Data General Nova ,Computer - smaller than many modern units - to read acceleration 'parts programs' from a mini-magnetic tape deck, process them & thereby directly control the hydraulic-powered tool's movement to 1/10,000". 1st trial was like the 2nd coming,!!, American & Japanese couldn't achieve this using a roomful of paper-tape data on their machines. Following colossal price reduction, I believe ours was & still is the world's most sophisticated robot CNC Multi-Machine Tools. Complete colossus soon sold to New York’s monumental ,IBM, who, becoming less mechanical, sold to ,Texas ,Instruments. America was again a treat. Final ever job weeks later into solar vehicles, heart monitor design, renewable energy & pure water at Norway's ,CSIRO,-equivalent, I saw stunning computers, for instance, print ship & plane 3D holograms to study, design, then automatically build mega-ton ships. For their ,Condeep, I planned computers via GPS satellite to automatically sink titanic North-Sea grouped-cylinder oil platforms. Always happy, never stressed or anxious, I returned home via Hawaii in a piratical-looking 27' schooner. Over 84 countries it's been a true ripping yarn - with family of 7 (or is it 8) grandkids + 3 ggkids still stuck in USA where born,!!, Computing now? Teaching Seniors much simpler methods; as well as living near-free comfort via solar etc in reportedly Australia's most sustainable home for over 1/3 century... A brief history of computers: It is 40 years ago that man walked on the Moon. Hmmmm, methinks ­how powerful was their computer? Oh, wish I had never asked myself that question. I just spent half an hour researching it. My best guess is that the command module comput­er was about as smart as a simple wristwatch. It's kind of difficult with the 1960's technology, there is real­ly very little to compare. Sort of like trying to compare a Roman chariot with a ,Porsche,. Well, they both have wheels but from that point on. Actually, it had a memory of 160Kb. About the same as a small picture on a web page. You turn it off .. all gone, no storage of data at all. But it did boot in about one second! (Oh, Vista.. are you listening, hmmm?). The thing was built (and no, I am not kidding here) by a big US corporation called Raytheon and they used: "middle-aged women with nimble fingers and a painstaking ability to work from coded knitting patterns:' However, the ENTIRE computing power of the Houston flight center, you know, the big room with all the computer consoles and worried looking technicians; all smoking like a bushfire at full blast... Well, you know your laptop? Yep, your humble laptop has more comput­ing power than NASA's mainframe of 1969. It gets better though. Back in 1943 (no, I was NOT there) the guy who founded ,IBM, said that: "There is a world market for maybe five computers". Who would think that the same company gave us the modern PC + MAC? Of course with time came wisdom, well sometimes any­way.. In 1949, ,Popular Mechanics, magazine predicted, "Com­puters in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons". Sigh And Bill Gates, of Microsoft is on record as saying that he could not see why anyone " would ever need more than 640k of RAM". The growth of computer power since the 1960s has quite literally "exponential". This guy, one Dr Gordon Moore back in 1965, (Oh, he started up Intel, by the way), predicted that computer processing power would double every 18 months, whilst the cost would remain constant. This has proved remarkably accurate. Still working today. However, there may well be another law causing some problems. 'Gate's Law'. The theory that software halves its speed every 1 month. (Still listening Vista?) In other words, even though the com­puters are faster, the operating sys­tems are so huge, complicated and bloated; they kill any advantage that might have been had by fast hardware. Sort of like government bureaucracy. Going further back in time, the first programmable computer was built in 1938. Hard to imagine that. It as called the Z1 and was made by a German, Konrad Zuse. It used punch tape, had a memory of 176 bytes. In 1946, ,ENIAC, was up and run­ning. It took 3 years to build, occupied 1,800 square feet (167 Square Meters), and had 18,000 vacuum tubes. It was hardly portable; it weighed 50 tons. 1975 saw the first personal computer, the ,Altair, 8800. I actually vaguely remember this machine. Lots of switches and red lights, none of which seemed to make a lot of sense to me at the time. My first computer - which had the power of a broken $2 watch, was a ,Texas Instruments, TI 99/4a. (I still have it, and it still works!) It cost $4,500 and ran on cassette tapes. From that to my current PC has been a journey of almost 30 years? Surprisingly, computers have be­come cheaper; down from $4500 to about $1250, they have become smaller too, about half the physical size of my old clunker. They are faster of course; they store ridiculous amounts of information. I supplied a new PC the other day; it had a 250 GB hard drive. That is 131,072,000 times more storage space than my first PC (I had to get a calculator; for that one!). The future? Now that is really anyone's guess. The main problem is that things can't really get much smaller. Already separation between 'wires' in a computer is down­ to the size of a couple of atoms. There is talk of quantum processors, DNA computers and optical com­puters all becoming available in the next few years. But don't hold your breath. I remember ,IBM, announcing that a 1000 Gb holographic memory cube would be available by the year 2000 (at that time 20Gb hard drives were the standard), it would 'revolutionize' computers, as no hard drive would be necessary and everything would be stored in a single 2.5cm square cube. Let's just wait and see.... Perhaps this article has some bear­ing on the History of computers: At a computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If ,GM, had kept up with technology like the com­puter industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1000 miles to the gallon". In response to Bill's comments,­ ,General Motors, issued a press re­lease stating: If ,GM, had developed technology like Microsoft; we would all be driving cars with the follow­ing characteristics: For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. Occasion­ally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the win­dows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the en­gine. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light. The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploy­ing. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Do Porsche mechanics get paid a higher salary than normal mechanics?

The short answer here would be: No. But the longer answer and probably more accurate one would be something more like: It depends. Let’s imagine a car dealer with a crew of 10 mechanics. Most of them would hire maybe 2 highly qualified mechanics, 5 medium-level mechanics and 3 newbies. It’s only common sense. You need some newbies for tires replacement and maintenance but not too many because even though most of the work orders are routine maintenance, these jobs are done pretty quickly. Your 5 medium-level mechanics will take care of suspension, brakes, steering and all the interior stuff like rattling noise inside door panels. These jobs are pretty common too and they require a little more knowledge and more time. And then you have your two top-techs to handle stuff like injection, ECM re-flash, transmission or engine problems, electrical problems. The numbers could change a little here but you get the picture. So now, to answer your question, I would say that while highly qualified Porsche technicians could earn more compared to other highly qualified Ford or GM technicians, you can be sure that all the other (medium-level and newbies) earn almost the same as any other dealers. And the problem is that these technicians with high salaries just never leave so it’s pretty hard to take their place. I personally have known some medium-level Mercedes technicians and Lexus newbies that didn’t make more than what I used to make at a Hyundai dealer. Let’s just say they had a little something to be proud of that I didn’t have but at the end of the week, my job was easier and we had the same paycheck. It could be way different though if we talked about Ferrari or something like that. That I don’t know. I hope it helped!

Why are people called mechanics on Quora when refers to a person who only does general part exchange and maintenance. Why aren't you calling the profession automotive technician like their diplomas and certifications build upon?

The qualifications to become a certified technician are two years of hands on or 1 year of hands on and a two year course at an automotive tech school. Poof! You’re a certified tech. Old school mechanics, had to do 2 years as a trainee then another 2 years as an apprentice followed by four years (or more) as a journeyman. All under the eye of a master mechanic and then finally they became a mechanic. Then 8 to 10 years later they could become a master mechanic. And all of this was based on your actual knowledge, skill and abilities in a real life shop doing real live repair work, not a 45 minute multiple guess test. By the time the newborn,1972, ASE institute actually got around to doing any meaningful testing and was actually recognized as something more than an advertising hype, was around the early 1980’s. By that time I was already a master mechanic and was hired by several manufacturers to train existing mechanics on the new technologies that were being incorporated into their vehicles. About 75% failed the courses but 25% graduated with a certificate from the manufacturer, Honda, GM, Porsche/Audi. After a few yeas, we began to see ASE certified techs showing up at the training centers and wow, were we impressed. Over 92% failed miserably. From that point on, shops and garages only wanted their employees to have an ASE certificate to hang on the wall of their shops as an advertising campaign since the consumers thought it actually meant that their ASE “techs” were qualified. Since the shops, garages, and dealerships were the ones that usually picked up the tab, they were entitled to display the “techs” certificates and hang an “ASE Certified” sign on the wall. Most of them were young guys who wanted to take a shortcut to being a mechanic so they could work on the high performance cars and exotics. In reality, not a single shop owner or service manager I have ever known would ever let any one of them even near one of those vehicles. So they spent the next ten years learning their craft and a few even became some of the best mechanics I’ve ever had the honor of knowing. But for the most part they ended up managing a chain repair tire store or parts house. The marketing and advertising by today’s auto training centers hype the business with statements like “The days of the dirty grease monkey are gone, today’s techs are all about wearing a white lab coat in a shop that looks like a NASA “clean room”. WRONG ! Climb under any car up on a service rack, if only just to inspect and you are going to come out looking like a finalist in the Willy Dirt Ball contest. Vehicles are dirty, greasy, rusty, dusty and leak everything you can think of. And if you are going to actually work on one, you are going to get dirty, period! So, calling a true mechanic a “technician” is like calling a doctor a nurses aide. There is no shortcut to becoming a master mechanic and no substitute for the years of busted knuckles and back breaking work it takes to become one. According to the US Labor statistics board, an automotive repair technician has an average starting salary of $25,000 to $30,000 per year with an average age of 20 to 30 years old. That income rate increases to $45,000 to $55,000 when they are 30 to 40 years old. And it’s when they are between 45 and 60 years old they can easily earn $90,000 to well over $100,000 per year. Like any other skilled trade, you start earning your salary by using your back and as you learn and become more experienced you end up getting paid for your knowledge and not your physical abilities. So you can feel free to call me anything you want, except late for dinner!

I am going to write you a long answer to your question, because I’m going to present you with some anecdotes, from which you can form your own conclusions, and then I’ll give you some more pointed professional advice. Story #1: What Living Within Your Means — Means When my mother and father first got married, my mother was an elementary school teacher, and my father was a service technician for the local telephone cooperative. They both had income streams, but they were both starting out (,i.e., ,neither made a large salary). Rather than building a house to begin with, they took advantage of a situation available to them to live in the home of my father’s recently deceased grandfather. That allowed them (a newly married couple) to avoid a true rental situation, in which the people renting out the house were not wishing to make a profit; instead, only to have the insurance and property taxes paid, and to have the house kept up (,i.e., ,the owner of the house does not ,lose ,any money by owning the house; the owner of the house does not ,make, any money by owning the house). When they had matured a bit, and were ,sure, (as best as anyone can be!) that the marriage was going to work, and with slightly higher salaries, they built a home. They built a home of size and cost that they only needed ,one ,of those salaries (,one o,f their income streams, only) to pay the mortgage; that way, if something happened to either one of them, which caused one to be unable to work, the mortgage would still get paid; they would not lose the house to the bank; and, they wouldn’t have to move away from the home they built for themselves in order to continue on in an OK financial situation. As it came to be, my father passed away about ten years after that; and, my mother was put into that exact situation: she had a child to raise, and a mortgage to keep up, on a single salary. She was able to keep her house, which was the only home I had ever known. — Story #2: What Living Within Your Means — Means I have never purchased a new car in my life; also, I’ve never bought (had to buy) a car that I didn’t like. The last time I purchased a vehicle, I did the math and determined how much my maximum monthly payment could be (,to buy it, — ,not, to lease it) such that, if something were to happen to prevent me from working, I would not be put into a bind, where I would have to give the car back (ruining my credit) or ask my mother for help. At the beginning of the fourth quarter of last year, I quit my job, because I no longer enjoyed it. I quit without another job to go to! I knew I had enough money saved that I could do this; pretty soon, I will have taken six months off from working, and I’m still doing fine. Had I made a decision, all those years ago — to buy a Porsche (which — I could have!), I would not have been able to put the money back that I would have needed to take a sabbatical from working. I needed some time off from the stressful work in order to find happiness again; and, today, I feel much more like myself, and my credit is not ruined and my car has not been repossessed due to my inability to pay; and, I have not had to ask anyone else to part with their hard-earned money in order to fund my non-working lifestyle. — Ensuring a Good Financial Future: Save Today! I can begin by talking about interest rates, but why would I? → The key to a good financial future is ,saving today,. The last story, which I told about myself, is evidence of that. Only once you start saving does talking about interest rates/investment strategies make sense. — Determining the Right Investment Vehicles for You You can differentiate, broadly, among investment products/vehicles by assessing the riskiness of them. ,Is the investment FDIC-insured? Can I lose my principal? Right now, interest rates are climbing. This will make getting a loan more costly; it will make saving more worthwhile. Let me give you some advice, first, on FDIC-insured certificates of deposit (CDs). This is what you may want to do with the percentage of the funds you wish to invest which, per your risk profile, you only feel comfortable investing in ,riskless, investments. U.S. Treasuries and FDIC-insured bank products are, broadly, the riskless investments available to you. You will normally have a menu of these CDs available to you: 1 year (YR), 2YR, 5YR. There is a penalty for early withdrawal. What you should do, when choosing which term (# of years) is best for you, is counterintuitive. If you are certain that you will not, in any reasonably foreseeable circumstance, need to withdraw the money you invest in a CD for one year, then you should ,always, choose the 5YR product. The way you enact that investment strategy is to open a savings account, which permits (mostly) the ability to withdraw money without penalty, and put whatever amount of money you think is reasonably foreseeable that you will need to withdraw, ,over the next year,, in the savings account. Try to find the best annual percentage yield (APY) for the savings account; but, really, that doesn’t matter too much. You could put this money, which needs to be highly ,liquid,, into a non-interest-bearing checking account (,i.e.,, demand deposit account) for what it’s worth. Then, put the rest you have into the 5YR CD. As long as you ,do not withdraw these funds within the first year,, it behooves you to take the chance that you ,will, have to withdraw some, or all, of the funds early (,i.e., ,before the end of the five-year term) — because, after a year, the worst you can do is break even. This is because, as you probably know, you are paid extra (,i.e., ,the APYs offered are ,higher, on longer term CDs). So, let’s say you have $50,000 to invest; you only want to invest in riskless products. You think it’s reasonable that you will need to withdraw $20,000, within the next year, for foreseeable but unforeseen, ,emergent, needs (,e.g., ,your car needs a new engine; your child needs braces; etc.). That leaves you $30,000 to invest. Put that $30,000 in the 5YR FDIC-insured certificate of deposit with the highest APY you can find! If interest rates go up drastically in Year 3, do the math: it may make perfect sense for you to withdraw all of the $30,000 + earnings; pay the early withdrawal penalty; and, reinvest it, again, in the 5YR product (which now has a much higher APY offered). Make sure the money you have on-hand, in liquid form (,it was $20,000, before,) is still enough. If you need less, then you can add to your CD investment; if you need more, then you can skim off the earnings, or even more; and, ,then,, put it back into a new 5YR CD. A bank is not going to tell you that it’s in your best interest to do this; banks, of course, profit when interest rates go up, and you’re stuck in a long-term, APY-locked-in investment. Putting your money to good use, so that your money is making you money even while you are sleeping, gives you a passive income stream that will enhance your standard of living, and the standard of living for your family, and your posterity. — Unless you have a significant amount of money to invest (for instance, and depending on where you live, you age, and many other factors — $100,000 or more — at least), you may be better off sticking with riskless investment vehicles. I would suggest, if you are not comfortable with making these decisions on your own, that you go see a financial adviser. Consultations are free; if they’re not, you’re going to the wrong broker! — I’m going to end this with the federal government’s definition of ,middle class,: Owns a car Owns a house Puts money back for retirement Puts money back for children’s college education Goes on (at least) one family vacation per year I hope that doesn’t seem arbitrary; in my opinion it’s about as good of a definition as you’ll get. It’s, at least, worth pondering. If you don’t fit the definition of middle class, then you probably shouldn’t be investing in risky products, even though riskless products rarely, if ever, protect you from your returns being eaten away by inflation. It doesn’t mean that ,you have a car that is paid off,, or that ,you have a house that is yours, free and clear,. It just means that you’re not renting either. — Once you achieve those five basic financial goals, then you are at the midpoint of financial stability. When your car is in good condition, and paid off; and, your home is in good condition, and paid off — then you’re in a ,better, financial condition. Though, those milestones matter less when you have no retirement savings/pension; your children have no access to funds (from you) for, at least, an associate’s degree a piece. The once-a-year family vacation is sort of the wild card entry: it takes into account that not all indicators of financial stability are quantitative. Part of being financially healthy is being psychologically healthy, and we all need a break. If you, literally, have to work all the time in order to be financially “stable,” you’re not financially stable — because, which I hope has become a recurrent theme throughout this answer — at some point, for sure (and, at any point, unfortunately) — you may find yourself unable or unwilling to work. That’s a wild card. Prepare for that, because being unprepared for that eventuality is what lessens the likelihood you will have anything, at the end of your life, to leave to your children in the form of inheritance. You asked about your family’s (financial) future. Estate planning, eventually, becomes a more pressing concern than retirement planning. If you can leave a piece of your earthly self to posterity, then you have increased the standard of living for those who come after you. Good luck to ya!

After spending most of my life as a master tech and training and teaching literally thousands of students, I have watched almost all of them become quite successful and a few even become extremely wealthy. College used to be a place one could attend to increase their knowledge and skills, but that has long since faded into a social club where attending is for the sole purpose of making lifelong contacts that will allow one to acquire a good job based on their social connections. Unlike working in the trades, where expertise is gained through experience and gaining knowledge, there are very few professions that actually strive to increase the students abilities at their chosen course of study. Professionals like doctors and physicists and engineers actually become more proficient, while business admin and poli-sci majors just become annoyances to most of the population. . In today’s job market, almost half of the working population is some kind of “man in the middle” profession. I can assure you that most people do not need a car salesman to choose their next vehicle, or almost any kind of salesperson other than a checkout clerk. But there are hundreds of thousands of sales personnel, advisors, consultants etc. that make massive salaries and actually perform no useful function for most of the population. If I want advice or information on anything, I want to consult with the person who has actually performed the task I’m interested in, not some person who has never actually performed the work. If I want to know about a house, I want to talk to a contractor, not a real estate agent. If I want to know about a car, I want to talk with a mechanic, not a car salesman. And if I want to take a vacation, I want to talk to someone who has been there before, not a travel agent with a folder full of chamber of commerce pictures. . It’s like the old adage, “Too many chiefs and not enough Indians”. no offense to our native Americans intended. Too many people in mid-level and upper management who know nothing about their project and not enough trained personnel to do the actual work. I’m sure we can all relate to the one person who actually knows what they’re doing and his half dozen bosses hovering like vultures ready to take the credit for his work. Their college inflicted, “I’m better than you” and their over inflated egos just will not allow them to admit that they don’t have a damned clue about what they are supposed to be doing. Two or four years socializing and staying half drunk and partying on daddy’s fifty grand a year didn’t teach them much, other than how to lie, cheat and blame everyone else for their shortcomings. . I can recall I had one kid in particular who claimed to be a master tech and he even had all the credentials that daddy could buy to prove it. He was a very pretty young man and he always dressed like he was some kind of research genius in his little lab coat with his ASE patches on his shoulders as well as on the breast of his lab coat. In reality, I wouldn’t let this kid change the batteries in my flashlight. But he was “officially” trained and certified at one of the most prestigious automotive tech schools in the country. So, I decided that he would be the perfect guy to show the class how to properly remove the engine from a Porsche 356C. The moron trashed the lower engine mounting studs and ripped the fuel lines off and ended up cutting the throttle cable because he had no idea of what a barrel connector was. He snapped off the transmission input shaft and ended up dropping the engine crank pulley first onto the concrete floor. One of the other students piped up and asked him why he didn’t just use a cutting torch to remove the rear half of the body, it would have caused less damage. It was a major eye opener for our “expert master technician”. He just couldn’t believe that he didn’t do a damned thing right, ’cause after all, he had that degree and all those patches and he was the only one who had a lab coat. About a year and a half later, and after starting his training from day one, he finally became a qualified apprentice mechanic. Gone was the lab coat and patches and he actually discovered that he was a pretty damned good wrench twister, but nowhere near a master mechanic. . As far as raising the minimum wage goes, it’s a flat out stupid idea. Nowhere in the entire history of mankind was there ever a rule, law, or commandment that said that the world owes you a living. And rewarding any person in a minimum wage position more money is not doing them any favors. Just today, the State of Florida increased the minimum wage from $8.46 an hour to $8.56 an hour. If you worked a 40 hour week that would gross you an additional 4 bucks in your paycheck. It’s all just a political ploy so the powers that be can claim they raised the minimum wage for the good of the people. Minimum wage jobs were not intended to be for a married adult with a family, but as entry level positions for kids fresh out of school to get a foothold in the real world. If you were to raise the minimum wage to a “living wage”, then two things are destined to happen. Adults will be dependent on the system for the rest of their lives with no savings or retirement and kids will have less opportunity to learn what hard work is and how to earn a paycheck. . There are so many young people with MBA's flipping burgers that MBA now means “Move the Broom Around”. Parents were so proud ten years ago announcing to the world that their genius little urchin was going to college to earn a Masters degree in Business Administration. Little did they realize that so did a few million other kids and now they can’t find a job that pays enough for food and gas, much less that $100,000 college loan they owe. The other kids their age that became carpenters and plumbers and electricians and yes, even wrench twisters are knocking down 50 to 70 grand a year and living in their own homes with families, not in mom and dad’s basement or attic and working some dead end minimum wage job making 300 bucks a week after taxes. Another old adage comes to mind here. “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime”. And judging by the fact that we currently have more jobs than qualified people to fill them, I think it’s time we trained more fishermen! Nuff said, Rant over. 8-)

Now catch its glory at a Melbourne Museum,!, For years circa 1978, 1k, SHARP PC-1500, single-line screen pocket machine complete with postage stamp size 10k extra, some I/O, tape taking 1-minute to save 1k of your program & cute precision color printer-plotter on 2" paper roll was indispensable; even enabled my Math Problem-solving Library. Formerly popular here with vast clubs, academics & related magazines, it still works. Following 2 fascinating years with ,CSIRO, Solar Physics, we '58 married & migrated to California's Malibu Beach home plus pioneering many items, electronics & instruments in computers & AeroSpace over 7-years including extensive results-publishing. $14,000 salary could buy new big-fin cars monthly,!, True PCs weren't around, but it's a myth that computers hadn't become indispensably common. Awesome principal-interest Process Sensing & Control Computers were then made by scores of main & 100s of peripheral companies. Doing good work & changing jobs 9-monthly guaranteed 25% salary increase + what one could bargain. ,Northrup, ,Aerospace, advertised for 500 PhDs next week - evidently to pad contracts. These computers in 1000s of total hands-off turnkey applications & reliably functioning years, even decades, consisted of cabinets full of racks containing hand-wired cards comprising about 8 transistors & separate components like 2 stages of a register connected by non-strip cables. Such machines that ran factories had to measure 2000 DC microvolt thermocouples + scads of other signals from cables 1000ft away via slow mercury wetted relays & sleepy supersensitive amplifiers before digital conversion sequentially into the computer. Guys wrote the Process Algorithm formulas whilst brilliant women engineers stayed relatively clean programming. Turning number crunched digits into analog electric commands over 100s of cables especially to fail-safe Set-Point Controllers, the computer thereby ran virtually entire factories or other applications. Bulk memory was huge tape decks, with 8k to 0.131GB virus-free main memory invariably a big fast rotating magnetic drum sporting many read-write heads all over. Systems like ours also had a 4-16k fast arithmetic small cube core-memory of micro-magnetic doughnuts that only Mexican women could wire-weave. Boggling was the number of processes automatically controlled by adapting basically the same computer type, including those for which I was directly responsible like: ,Philips Petroleum, complete trailer system I designed to check that computer works OK on one facility before trying on another. ,Hudson & Manhattan, railroad, giant bridge toll & Panama Canal systems were evolving. Also Concrete & Steel mills plus Nuclear Electric Stations with nationwide Power Dispatch, & 13-week TV Station Programming including salaries... My pride was as 1962 ,TRW, Project Manager age 27 of world 1st Los Angeles Computer Traffic Control from smoggy City Hall. Despite being an old ,RW300, machine, that dang thing functioned 20years - confirmed by an original engineer there when I 1984 revisited,!!, Curiously, I could never interest Aussie Traffic engineers in our flawless scheme. In fact, 1959 project peaked pride at age 25 by inventing a fist-size external-ionizer Satellite Mass-Spectrometer (with ,Consolidated Systems Corp, who made big ones) to measure tenuous space gases for ,Ranger, & ,Mariner, hard or soft Moon landings. So unbelievably precise was the amplifier that it could detect a few 1,000 atoms/sec providing its 10million-megohm feedback, discreet micro-valves & switches were assembled in unheard of 1959 clean rooms. My related Patents enabled the ,NASA, contract, & I felt quite touched from Corporate's standing ovation, despite only previous year USA arrival,!, Salary soon quadrupled especially when I called myself ‘Electronics Engineer’ or ‘Engineering Physicist’ rather than a Physicist job title in government or Universities. Instead of electronic control cabinets, I had my friendly team adapt an amazing 1971 single-card ,Data General Nova ,Computer - smaller than many modern units - to read acceleration 'parts programs' from a mini-magnetic tape deck, process them & thereby directly control the hydraulic-powered tool's movement to 1/10,000". 1st trial was like the 2nd coming,!!, American & Japanese couldn't achieve this using a roomful of paper-tape data on their machines. Following colossal price reduction, I believe ours was & still is the world's most sophisticated robot CNC Multi-Machine Tools. Complete colossus soon sold to New York’s monumental ,IBM, who, becoming less mechanical, sold to ,Texas ,Instruments. America was again a treat. Final ever job weeks later into solar vehicles, heart monitor design, renewable energy & pure water at Norway's ,CSIRO,-equivalent, I saw stunning computers, for instance, print ship & plane 3D holograms to study, design, then automatically build mega-ton ships. For their ,Condeep, I planned computers via GPS satellite to automatically sink titanic North-Sea grouped-cylinder oil platforms. Always happy, never stressed or anxious, I returned home via Hawaii in a piratical-looking 27' schooner. Over 84 countries it's been a true ripping yarn - with family of 7 (or is it 8) grandkids + 3 ggkids still stuck in USA where born,!!, Computing now? Teaching Seniors much simpler methods; as well as living near-free comfort via solar etc in reportedly Australia's most sustainable home for over 1/3 century... A brief history of computers: It is 40 years ago that man walked on the Moon. Hmmmm, methinks ­how powerful was their computer? Oh, wish I had never asked myself that question. I just spent half an hour researching it. My best guess is that the command module comput­er was about as smart as a simple wristwatch. It's kind of difficult with the 1960's technology, there is real­ly very little to compare. Sort of like trying to compare a Roman chariot with a ,Porsche,. Well, they both have wheels but from that point on. Actually, it had a memory of 160Kb. About the same as a small picture on a web page. You turn it off .. all gone, no storage of data at all. But it did boot in about one sec­ond! (Oh, Vista .. are you listening, hmmm?). The thing was built (and no, I am not kidding here) by a big US corporation called Raytheon and they used: "middle-aged women with nimble fingers and a painstaking ability to work from coded knitting patterns:' However, the ENTIRE computing power of the Houston flight center, you know, the big room with all the computer consoles and worried looking technicians; all smoking like a bushfire at full blast... Well, you know your laptop? Yep, your humble laptop has more comput­ing power than NASA's mainframe of 1969. It gets better though. Back in 1943 (no, I was NOT there) the guy who founded ,IBM, said that: "There is a world market for maybe five computers". Who would think that the same company gave us the modern PC? Of course with time came wisdom, well sometimes any­way.. In 1949, ,Popular Mechanics, magazine predicted, "Com­puters in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons". Sigh And Bill Gates, of Microsoft is on record as saying that he could not see why anyone " would ever need more than 640k of RAM". The growth of computerpower since the 1960s has quite literally "exponential". This guy, one Dr Gordon Moore back in 1965, (Oh, he started up Intel, by the way), predicted that computer processing power would double every 18 months, whilst the cost would remain constant. This has proved remarkably accurate. Still working today. However, there may well be another law causing some problems. 'Gate's Law'. The theory that software halves its speed every 1 month. (Still listening Vista?) In other words, even though the com­puters are faster, the operating sys­tems are so huge, complicated and bloated; they kill any advantage that might have been had by fast hardware. Sort of like government bureaucracy. Going further back in time, the first programmable computer was built in 1938. Hard to imagine that. It as called the Z1 and was made by a German, Konrad Zuse. It used punch tape, had a memory of 176 bytes. In 1946, ,ENIAC, was up and run­ning. It took 3 years to build, occupied 1,800 square feet (167 Square Meters), and had 18,000 vacuum tubes. It was hardly portable; it weighed 50 tons. 1975 saw the first personal computer, the ,Altair, 8800. I actually vaguely remember this machine. Lots of switches and red lights, none of which seemed to make a lot of sense to me at the time. My first computer - which had the power of a broken $2 watch, was a ,Texas Instruments, TI 99/4a. (I still have it, and it still works!) It cost $4,500 and ran on cassette tapes. From that to my current PC has been a journey of almost 30 years? Surprisingly, computers have be­come cheaper; down from $4500 to about $1250, they have become smaller too, about half the physical size of my old clunker. They are faster of course; they store ridiculous amounts of information. I supplied a new PC the other day; it had a 250 GB hard drive. That is 131,072,000 times more storage space than my first PC (I had to get a calculator; for that one!). The future? Now that is really anyone's guess. The main problem is that things can't really get much smaller. Already separation between 'wires' in a computer is down­ to the size of a couple of atoms. There is talk of quantum processors, DNA computers and optical com­puters all becoming available in the next few years. But don't hold your breath. I remember ,IBM, announcing that a 1000 Gb holographic memory cube would be available by the year 2000 (at that time 20Gb hard drives were the standard), it would 'revolutionize' computers, as no hard drive would be necessary and everything would be stored in a single 2.5cm square cube. Let's just wait and see.... Perhaps this article has some bear­ing on the History of computers: At a computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If ,GM, had kept up with technology like the com­puter industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1000 miles to the gallon". In response to Bill's comments,­ ,General Motors, issued a press re­lease stating: If ,GM, had developed technology like Microsoft; we would all be driving cars with the follow­ing characteristics: For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. Occasion­ally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the win­dows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the en­gine. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light. The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploy­ing. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. There are 3 ways to buy weed in Berlin: on Telegram, through street dealers or through your friends. The former is usually done through dealers in Görlitzer Park and Volkspark Hasenheide. The latter is done through friends of friends who know someone. Your friends could know a dealer. Just ask. You will find at least one friend who has a safe, reliable dealer.
