What is the most reliable tractor?
Kubota!!, had 2 John Deere, noting but junk. In 2007 I purchase a new Kubota L3400 with 4 wheel drive, front loader and just about every attachment that would fit on it. The first think I did is dig a 9 foot hole and put both john deere in it and covered it back up. I have use my Kubota just about every day for the last 14 years some times like a bull dozer. When I purchase it a friend tool me if you get on it and it won’t start check the fuel filter or the battery, In 14 years only 5 time it would not crank. Two times it was the battery and three times I had to change the fuel filter. Three weeks ago I purchase me a brand new 2021 Kubota L4701 with every thing on it, 4-wheel drive, front end loader, grapple, every thing hydraulic, pole saw, stump grinder and box blade. Had at least a dozen people who ask to buy the old one But I put it in the shop and had them go over everything and change what ever needed to be change. Will use it mostly for bush hogging. They will both be here long time after I'm gone.
How much does a good snow blower cost?
Good is a subjective attribute. I bought a BX 1800 series Kubota lawn tractor about 20 years ago. It came with a snow blower and a lawn mower deck as attachments. It has a diesel 20 HP engine. Outside of oil changes and a new battery, maintenance has been trivial. I service it at home because it requires a significant trailer to haul it to the dealer. It mows two or three acres of grass in the summer and blows snow in the winter. I did damage the mower deck on a large rock mowing a large hay field (expensive error). I need to sharpen the blades about every year (and replaced them once). The hydraulic hoses for the snow blower needed replacement after about 15 years. I let the drive chain for the snowblower rust and break (it needs a regular lube with chain oil), and I use a fairly steady supply of shear pins for the auger. The cost new was about $11,000. That seems like a lot but I love it. It is strong and quiet. It starts easily and because it is diesel it doesn’t use much fuel. It has no spark plugs or carburetor to need service. The only “tune-up” ever needed is a set of (expensive) fuel filters, but only once in 20 years with about 500 hrs of use. The tractor has been outside in the weather without a garage so the paint has faded and the seat cover has worn out (from sun and weather). But it still does the job. Changing from snowblower to mower and back is not fun and is the worst aspect of the tractor. The winter chains that I got were expensive and fit poorly. I significantly modified them and am now much happier.
How long will a Kubota tractor last?
As with any mechanical equipment, it will last until it wears out ,if you keep it maintained., I have a B7200 that was made some time in the early 1980s. It’s about worn out, but the reason it’s lasted this long is because the prior owner(s) kept the oil changed, the fuel & air filters changed and the hydraulic system clean. For a sub-compact tractor like this, 30+ years is a fantastic life span in my book. I need to give the old girl a proper overhaul and could probably do so for less than $2500. That would be a miniscule amount for another 30 years’ service…
Can a car be refuelled by cooking oil?
I have a Kubota diesel utility tractor that I mostly use to mow the lawn. A few years back I mixed some filtered peanut oil with regular diesel fuel and it ran. Smelled like French fries. The issue with this is there is glycerin in cooking oil and if it is not removed it will eventually clog your injectors. This WILL NOT WORK on a gasoline engine.
What are the worst diesel engines?
I would say any diesel run by people who don’t understand the strengths and weaknesses of the diesel they have may disappoint. We have a 57 HP Beta marine diesel based on a naturally aspirated Kubota block. Change the oil, the filters and the belts and impeller regularly and feed clean fuel to it and tighten the clamps and torque the bolts to spec as the manual suggests and it should last decades, especially if you motor at constant RPMs at nicely economical parts of your fuel map. Leave it idling for hours or constantly move up and down throttle and you’ll get unnecessary wear and poorer fuel performance. Diesels for cars can take that treatment, but those of ships and trains are happiest at steady RPMs.
What kind of car will last you the longest? How long do you think that would be?
My first 4-wheeled, internal combustion engine powered, street legal Vehicle that I owned (and still own) is a 1939 Ford model 9N farm tractor. It will do a steady 10 miles per hour and I did a few thousand miles on that machine. The only repairs I have done to it in the 20 years I have owned it are Brakes, Hydraulic pump, and front wheel bearings. Regular maintenance of fluids, filters, spark plugs etc doesn't count as “repairs” so keep in mind the distinction there. This year I borrowed a brand new Kubota tractor about the same horsepower rating and physical size. I had more problems in 20 days than I did in 20 years. So far, it's been more reliable than every car I have ever owned COMBINED. In 3 months as of this writing, it will be 80 years old. I am certain that if I kept up the maintenance that it should last me an easy 50 years of service before it needs major repairs. Too bad they don't make automobiles like this, they never did and never will… Specs for those interested, it has the Ferguson 3-Point hitch, I upgraded the PTO from 1–1/8 to the 1–3/8 spline, I have the right angle drive flat belt on it. It is also equipped with the Sherman two speed box between the engine and transmission, it has been upgraded to have the side mount distributor, and a delcotron one wire marine alternator. It takes on average only 2–3 pulls on the hand crank to start the engine, or I can use the electric starter. I have sometimes considered putting a Ford Flathead V8 in it, but just can't find a reason to bring one in from the stack and rebuild it for that purpose. Yes I am aware that they make a kit for installing a 4.3 liter Chevy V6 in the tractor, but if I did that, I would be putting a full EFI equipped V6 in there and shortening each wire and doing all the fine detail work for fitting a high pressure fuel pump in the tank and making it very sleek/ clean. I would likely retain the ability to hand crank start it.
Are electric lawn mowers worth it?
Yes and no. Electric lawn mowers would be ideal only for small yards. They’re completely unserviceable and very expensive to buy parts for. It only takes one blade of grass to get into the motor and ruin it, then your looking at a price likely more expensive than a new mower for only a new electric motor. Now, if you were to get one made my DeWalt or Milwaukee and you already had batteries and a charger, then I’d say go for it because a replacement battery for that isn’t that expensive, and depending on how many batteries you have, you basically have an unlimited run time. There are Pros and Cons to both, gas, diesel (riding) and electric mowers. PROS (Gasoline) Gasoline engines are very easy to diagnose with issues because they need 4 things to run. Compression, Spark, Fuel, and Air. Gasoline engines have an almost unlimited run time, as long as you keep fuel in the tank and the engine well serviced. Electric mowers only last at most, 1.5 hours on a full charge. Gasoline engines are relatively inexpensive to get parts for and are extremely easy to find parts for. Gasoline engines are very reliable and have plenty of power and torque for pulling wagons and other implements, mowing uphill, and if you like to, they’re great for going off-road with. Gas powered mowers are the most common choice for off-roading, mainly because they can be customized to run louder, quieter, faster, or however you want. Gasoline engines can also be used for many things such as powering a pump, lift, a boat or a go kart. Which is another reason people buy gasoline lawnmowers is that you can put the engine in just about anything if something were to go wrong with the transmission or the thing just completely rusts out Gasoline lawn mowers, when properly maintained last upward of 10 years as opposed to electric ones that last only 5 until they require an expensive new battery. Gasoline mowers are a better choice for lawns larger than 1 acre as most electric mowers only last long enough for you to cut 1 acre. But, let’s be honest, who really wants to wait 4 hours for your mower to charge so you can mow the other half of your lawn? If something we’re to happen to your engine completely ruining it, like throwing a rod through the block, you can find good donor mowers with good engines for a reasonable price that you can swap the motor into your good mower. PROS (Electric) Electric mowers are drastically quieter than gasoline or diesel mowers, making them much more ideal for mowing at night or around elderly people or young ones that may not be able to tolerate the sound as much. Electric mowers are a good choice now more than ever with rising gas prices and they cost far less to maintain. Electric mowers are a good choice for small (1 acre or less) lawns with cub cadet electric mowers lasting up to 1.5 hours on a full charge. If you get home later and forgot you had to move that pile of gravel, you could do it during the night! A gasoline or diesel mower would wake the neighbors and nobody wants to wake Karen up from her beauty sleep, because we all know how that’s gonna go. If your for saving the environment, electric mowers don’t pollute any! (Not counting all the coal that had to be burnt to make that electricity) You’ll never have to replace any spark plugs, oil filters, oil, fuel filters, or use any starting fluid PROS (Diesel) Many people may not know this, but Diesel engines produce a fraction of the carbon monoxide that a gas engine produces. Diesel fuel may cost a dime a gallon more, but Diesel engines run at lower RPM so they’re better of fuel efficiency. I used to have a 60” simplicity legacy XL with a 2 cylinder 27 horsepower Kohler command horizontal shaft engine, and I replaced it with a 60” Kubota bx2200 with a 3 cylinder horizontal shaft Kubota D905 diese engine at it consumes half the amount of fuel my simplicity used to! Diesel engines have over twice the torque a gasoline or electric mower has, meaning it can cut through thick grass without bogging down. Today I actually cut through 4 acres of 15” long grass (If you can’t tell, I like putting off mowing to the last minute lol) If you can find it, you can run the red stuff. The cherry flavor. The fruit punch. Whatever you like to call it, you can run off-road diesel. Off-road diesel is not taxed like highway diesel is. (Highway is dyed blue or green and off-road is dyed red) Diesel engines are also very easy to diagnose, or maybe energy easier since all they require is fuel, air and compression. if your ever in a serious pinch, you can use lightweight engine oil as an alternative to diesel, but I wouldn’t recommend using oil unless you seriously must, like if out of fuel. If you use a diesel mower for plowing snow, many have a decompression knob to make it easier to start CONS (Gasoline) Gasoline is not cheap, but using the wrong gasoline is more costly. Yes, you can use the wrong gasoline. Don’t fall for the manufactures that advertise that the motor is compatible with regular unleaded 87 octane gasoline. Because really, the ethanol in that fuel can clog flow holes and gum up the carburetor or injectors. You should really only run minimum 93 octane but be sure that the fuel has ZERO ethanol whatsoever, otherwise you’ll be paying the price down the road. Things happen. Equipment fails. And you may be finding yourself at a small engine mechanic paying 3 figures to get your mower cutting again. There are many moving parts that must all be in sync for you lawnmower to work at its peak, and if one thing fails, that can lead to another part failing like if an idler pulley seizes it will tear the belt. Electric mowers have much less parts that can fail. CONS (Electric) Electric mowers may have less parts than a gasoline engine, but the parts it does have can fail much easier than a gasoline or diesel. All it takes is sone water in the motor and your out at least $300 in buying a new motor. The amount of switches, solenoids, relays and fuses in an electric mower are rediculous considering how easy those parts can fail. Troubleshooting electric mowers is almost impossible and the parts to repair are not cheap. Run time is extremely limited to at most 1.5 hours, or 1 acre whereas with a gasoline or diesel, you can mow for as long as you need to depending on how much fuel you have on hand. You think the run time is bad? It take 4 hours on average to charge up to 100% These machines are completely unserviceable. If something goes wrong, you’ll be calling the dealer. Good luck finding parts for these mowers, because you can’t find diagrams to save your life. And you won’t be able to buy aftermarket parts for this electric equipment, you’ll be paying 3–4 figures at the dealer for batteries and motors. CONS (Diesel) So with a gasoline engine, if you run outta fuel, you just throw 5 gallons in and go, right? It may take a few extra cranks to get the fuel to the pump and through the system, but it’ll start. With a diesel, you must prime it if you run out of fuel. Some engines may have a priming system but most don’t. You’ll have to use almost a full can of ether (starting fluid) just to get the fuel through the lines to the injection pump and through to the injectors. Parts are typically a bit more expensive for Diesel engines but they are also usually stronger. If you use your tractor for plowing, you may not want to run a diesel. Depending on how cold it gets in your area, the diesel fuel can gel up, then you’ll have to somehow heat it up, although I’ve only ever had it gel up once in my truck but diesels will take their sweet time warming up as well. Starting in the winter without glow plugs will also do a number on your battery and starter. If you do decide to buy a new electric, gas or diesel lawn mower, don’t get it from any big box store such as Lowe’s or Home Depot, the decks are all molded and they use cheap transaxles. Go to your local dealer where they will sell you fabricated decks and stronger transaxles. If your looking for a push mower, then it doesn’t really matter where you get it. I understand that most people won’t be abusing an electric lawn mower or gas lawn mower but I just thought I’d try to cover all the bases. Hope this helps you make your decision!
