What is the best kind of hot plate? Does infrared use a halogen bulb? How long do the bulbs last and how much are replacements? What kind uses the least electricity?

Infrared doesn't have a bulb, they last a good while depending on how well you take care of it. The one with the lowest wattage uses the least amount of power.

What is the estimated yearly cost to cook electricity-wise?

How does a halogen bulb work?

Halogen lamps operate at very high pressure, perhaps 400 psi cold. That pressure makes it harder for tungsten to evaporate off the filament, so the lamp can burn brighter (which makes it more efficient) and still last longer than a conventional incandescent lamp. In order to achieve this high pressure the lamp capsule has to be small, so it doesn't have to be made impractically thick. But the small envelope means that the tungsten that ,does, evaporate only has a small area to condense onto, so it will tend to blacken the envelope rapidly, plating out a coating of tungsten onto the surface. This happens with regular lamps too, but they have a lot of surface area so the blackening is much slower. So the lamp has a little iodine or bromine gas added. If the envelope is very hot, this will capture the tungsten and prevent it from plating out onto the envelope. That's the halogen part. It's easy to make the envelope very hot, just make it very small so it's close to the filament. That also means it's easier to hold the high pressure. Except that the temperature is so high that glass will soften and the lamp will explode; so instead of glass it's made of quartz. This is expensive, but because the envelope is small it doesn't take a whole lot. But you have to keep fingerprints off the lamp, because your sweat will attack the quartz at high temperatures. That's why you never touch a halogen lamp capsule, or wash it with alcohol if you do. You also have to operate the lamp inside a protective shield, because if it ,should ,break for any reason it will explode violently from the high pressure, scattering bits of super-hot quartz all over the room. Some halogen lamps have a built-in reflector and shield, but most have to use a shielded fixture. You also have to operate the lamp at the correct voltage. If the voltage is too high it will burn out rapidly because it's already running very hot in normal operation. But if the voltage is too low, the evaporating tungsten won't be captured and the lamp will have short life because it will blacken quickly.

Which company sells the best cookware for induction cooktops?

While selecting a brand of cookware for induction cooktops you must keep in mind to go for Stainless cookware and pans as they are a wonderful option for induction cooking since they are durable and simple to clean, although the results may be inconsistent at times. Since not all stainless steel is magnetic, you need to do a magnet test to be sure. Brand also plays an important role while selecting a cookware as you might want a cookware of premium quality with affordable price. I bought this MYBorosil cookware for induction cooktops last week. I went for Borosil cookware as it consists of all the premium quality features at an affordable price. The bottom of an impact bonded tri-ply is formed by forging three metals–Stainless Steel, Aluminum, and Stainless Steel–under high impact to eliminate air gaps between the metal layers. This provides equal and uniform heat distribution during cooking, as well as a long life for the bottom. Tri-Ply Bottom has Impact Bonding. You can cook soup and curried veggies in a stainless steel multipurpose pan. Impact bonded bottom for quicker and more uniform cooking Energy efficient tri-ply induction compatible impact bonded bottom for faster and more even cooking. Grip is both secure and pleasant for safety purposes. They are Professionally made from high-quality, heavy-gauge stainless steel for long-term use. Dishwasher safe and compatible with all kinds of stoves, including gas, induction, hot plate, and halogen. Cleaning it is quite easy. The bottom has a 30-year guarantee, and the product has a one-year warranty.

Why do bulbs expire after some time?

By “go out”, I assume you mean fail, and want to know what the “failure mechanism” is in normal operation. This depends on the light bulb. The easiest to describe is a conventional incandescent bulb. The filament (the part that glows), has a ,very, low vapor pressure at room temperature—I’ve heard it described as 1 atom per universe! At the elevated temperature that the filament operates at, it’s much larger. Over time, the tungsten slowly vaporizes, and plates out on the colder glass envelope. This is why these bulbs darken over time. Eventually part of the filament gets too thin. Usually, when the bulb is turned on, the current flow is higher (tungsten has a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity—as it gets hotter, the resistance goes up, therefore the current goes down). This causes a shock to the filament, probably both from the high current, and mechanically as the temperature increases and the length changes. At that point the filament breaks. Halogen bulbs are similar to incandescent ones, with a twist. The envelope isn’t glass, it’s quartz, which can withstand much higher temperatures. It’s also closer to the filament, so it’s hotter. Inside the envelope is a halogen gas (like bromine—I don’t know which is actually used). As I understand it, the hot envelope plus the halogen causes the tungsten to plate back onto the filament. This makes halogen bulbs last much longer (or can be brighter, lamp design involves several tradeoffs). Because the tungsten doesn’t plate onto the envelope, the color and brightness of the lamp is more stable as well. However the plating back onto the filament isn’t perfect, so thin spots eventually develop, and the above process for the filament breaking happens. I’ve seen pictures where this process is a bit different for AC & DC currents through the filament, with AC apparently making the process work more evenly. My experience with many LED lamps is that they are very poorly made, and fail much faster than would be expected from the LED itself. I don’t know the details of these failures however. The LEDs will eventually fail as well, probably due to “electromigration”. This is similar to the tungsten problem for incandescent lights, but the wires are much thinner & the temperatures are much lower. I don’t know the most common failure modes for fluorescent lights, but it seems there are two of them. The heaters that vaporize the mercury (which sustains an arc) are like small incandescent lamps, and fail the same way (but they are only used at startup, and thus can last much longer). Or the mercury can (very slowly) outgas from the envelope. Carbon arc lamps are really simple to understand failures—the carbon rods are used up making the arc (the arc is so hot that it destroys the tips). I don’t enough about other lamp types—such as xenon arc, mercury vapor & sodium—to give a good answer. I would guess that outgassing is the biggest problem, perhaps followed by igniter failure.

What is the function of the metal casing in the light bulb?

Depends on the type of lamp. A UV-C lamp has a metal plate or box proximal to the filament upon which the Mercury forms a plasma that is lower in resistance than the voltage needed to keep the filament Red hot. Once “struck” by the starter, the plate or box will glow an intense and dangerous Blue-Violet color while the filament will cool to less than Red hot. If the lamp is a Halogen type, the “box” is the container for the Halogen gas, Bromine, Iodine, etc. These cause the Tungsten of the filament, which is always boiling away and forms the black on the inside of old incandescent bulbs, to replate out on the filament instead. This extends the life of the lamp.

What are the advantages of induction stove over halogen stove?

The biggest advantage is that the change in temperature is comparable to that of a gas stove. With halogen and hot metal plates, the transfer of heat is slower, therefore the increase in heat is more gradual and takes more time. Likewise, when you power them down, there is residual heat that is also gradually going down and takes time, therefore, more heat is retained. This is rather frustrating if you come from flame stoves. Induction behaves like flame stoves because it is the pan itself that generates heat, and when the cooker is powered down, the pan instantly ceases to generate heat actively.
