The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is asking for the help of all road users to report any customised car number plates that do not follow the JPJ regulated specifications.

In just the first 5 months of 2020, JPJ has issued a total of 12,694 notices to car owners for using a number plate that is not up to the JPJ regulated specifications.

JPJ also reports that they have compounded 7,455 cars between January and May for the same reason.

For years, customised, or also known as “fancy”, number plates have been a massive problem for JPJ. In 2016, JPJ started taking action against these fancy number plates by issuing summons and compounds. It is still an ongoing effort for the department.

JPJ Director-General Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid stated that JPJ will now be calling car owners with a non-regulated number plate into questioning.

Further investigations will be carried out after the questioning before a summon is issued should JPJ determined that the number plate style is not up to par.

In 2016, 13,606 compounds were issued for the offence. The number only grew as the years passed. In 2019, a total of 31,716 compounds were issued, the highest number yet.

The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
