I'm working on an ESP8266 box to control an LED strip for my desk and it's been a while since I did this. I was wondering, are there standard protocols/apps to control lighting around the house? What do you recommend? Right now I'm using a Python script and the shell. https://t.co/jeYHEIco0P

It depends on what you want to control. If you want to control all 5 strips in the same way at the same time, then the controller is not going to be the issue, but the power interfacing will be. Micros only output a few milliamps on the control ports so you have to use external circuitry, including a power supply, to drive the load.
To get into IoT A person should have the basic fundamental knowledge of Electronics, Networking and sensors. Than take some basic defi - like turn off/on LEDs - Temp Sensor - Luman Control or speed Control. Than select IoT gateway. Any gateway (Arduino , raspberry PI, Orange PI, banana PI, ARM CORTEX M3, ESP8266. and start working on it and - My point of view if you're new in to all this take Arduino micro controller as gateway and start making small project.
You don’t. A chain of WS2812 LEDs is numbered as 0, the one nearest the processor, to [whatever], the one at the end. If you have a 100-LED strip, the first one is 0 and the last one is 99. In fact, the command signal is decremented by 1 every time it goes from one LED to the next and, secretly, every LED thinks it is number 0. Most of the time, the library that controls the LEDs (I use FastLED.h) needs to know how many there are, otherwise it sends commands for LEDs that aren’t there. so something like fill_solid(&(leds[0]), NUM_LEDS, 0x0); FastLED.show(); will program all the LEDs to be black. and for (int i=0; i<60; i++) { x = (random(NUM_LEDS)); leds[x] = 0x030303; FastLED.show(); delay(40); leds[x] = CRGB::Black; } will give random white flashes for a couple of seconds, fairly dim ones, in fact, and it looks OK as part of the boot sequence on my binary clock.
There are two ways to do that , First, you can use the same code. you can connect wifi module esp8266 to arduino using Serial communication (Rx, Tx) and you will have to add some extra lines in your arduino code which will send and recieve the serial data from ESP. The Esp on recieving data from blynk will send signal to arduino and arduino will control the lights and when arduino needs to send something on Blynk it will send it to ESP and ESP will send that to blynk. The other way is to connect all the I/Os to esp and communicate directly with blynk app but ESP do not have enough analog pins but you can always use multiplexers or i2c based i/os expander.
LED’s are Lights .. . They are NOT antenna.
I programmed seven ESP8266 to make sequential requests over WiFi to create LED patterns. Lots of fun. I've also made a box that sends a message over WiFi when turned upside down: It's a ton of fun!
