transfer case pajero Q&A Review

How does the power transmission take place in 4x4 drive cars like a Pajero?

The modern Pajero has a full time 4wd system with a transfer case AND a center differential, making it suitable for 4wd use on all surfaces. The transfer case also allows you to disengage the front wheels, to run in 2wd, but it is still considered a 'full-time' system because you have the option of running in 4wd on pavement with no excess wear to the drivetrain. The system is called "Super Select II" and utilizes a planetary center diff with a viscous coupling as well as a mechanical lock on the rear diff. http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com/en/spirit/technology/library/4wd.html

I own a Mitsubishi Pajero Mini 1998. It is currently stuck in 4WD and is putting a strain on the engine. How do I get it back into 2WD?

If it is "stuck" in 4WD, then there are problems with your transfer case and you need to take your vehicle to an experienced shop. It may be something as simple as a solenoid, or something as complex as needing your entire transmission rebuilt or replaced. There's simply no way to tell without opening the tranny pan and having look. DO NOT delay. Take your vehicle in to get it troubleshot ASAP.

Why does the Indian Army consistently buy Maruti-Gypsy rather than other SUVs?

The main reason for using tgis vehicle was as given below :- 1. Cost - compared to other suv and offroader vehicle maruti gypsy was indigenously made and cost effective and also came with transfer case 2. Ground clearence - gypsy offers better ground clearence ... Which affects movement of vehicles specially in snow clad areas (personally experienced this ) . we had a pajero in - 30 degree with 3 feet snow and inspite of the power the vehicle couldnt move due to less ground clearence and gypsy however managed to move easily. 3. Indian vehicle - being an indian vehicle the spare parts are easy to procure for the indian army. 4. Versatile - the vehicle can be used in combat also by taking its head off and mounting a light machine gun and using it for anti air craft role. Many wouldnt know but maruti gypsy is a fighting vehicle also for the indian army . 5. Durability - the life of a maruti gypsy in army is 120000 kms .

Why do some cars have two gear knobs?

This phenomenon originated from the "two gears" of some hard-core off-road vehicles. Let's discuss it together. As we all know, generally only the shift lever is called the gear lever. One of the "two gear levers" naturally refers to the gear shift of the gearbox. However, some curious friends discovered that on some hard-core off-road vehicles, such as the cash Jeep Wrangler and Mitsubishi Pajero, the center console has a gear lever similar to a shift lever. The "shift lever" next to the shif...

What generation of Ford Ranger is most durable and/or has the greatest longevity?

I would have to say the Ford Courier. It didn't have a turbo. IN my country, the Ford Ranger has the shortest lifespan. It's hard to see a Ford older than 5 years. My mechanic used to say FixOrRepairDaily. I also drive a 40-year-old Mitsubishi Pajero Turbo set up for off-road. Recently had to replace the engine and driveshaft. And they are COMMONPLACE. Toyotas…. Huge fleets of them over 20 years old. Ford is always the first to come out with a new design or look. I remember my Ford, the front driveshaft boots were 700 dollars a piece when other trucks charged 80 bucks. I have no idea why its like that, but that threw me off all Fords. In fact, it's rare to see Ford cars in my country. Longevity and quality issues. Edit. I installed a suspension lift on my Ford. 8 inches. Not a body lift. I did not want reduced wheel travel. Even reclocked the transfer case and realigned the driveline. Guess what? No hardcore stuff. Moderate driving on trails, 4WD low range, and the frame bent inwards. You want a Ford? Don't modify it. If you want to look at trucks that are robust. look at trucks the Taliban uses, the UN and TRUCKERS. That leaves you Toyota, Isuzu, and Nissan. That's my 2 cents. Ford trucks are powerful and have the smallest engines, but the highest boost. Something has to give. It doesn't help that Diesel pickup trucks used by civilians are kind of new here. So people tend to be lazy with coolant and oil changes. the very things that will take years off your truck. And most truck owners are first-time truck owners with their first diesel. They don't warm their car up by driving normally/moderately before flooring it with an incantation for the turbo to come to life. And of course, add to the fact that many truck drivers here use a cheaper grade of diesel. Not Euro 5. WHich effectively, in my country, is the lowest grade of diesel in the world, mixed with palm oil. For those not in my part of the world, remember that a Ford here is not an American Ford. The latest Ford here shares the same engine as the Mazda pickup and the Land Rover Defender. I rest my case.

What is the 4 by 4 drive mode in a Tata Hexa car?

The 4x4 system in the Tata Hexa is a Borg Warner sourced Torque on Demand AWD system with a 60:40 torque split. I can't think of any other better explanation of the system than the one provided by Team BHP. The Hexa MT (top variant only) is available with an electronically-controlled AWD system from Borg Warner. Just to be clear = this isn't a hardcore mud plugger & it won't even match a Fortuner / Pajero in the mountains. Instead, think of the Hexa as a 7-seater that can do low-medium level offroading when you need it to & take you touring through the broken / inexistent roads of India. This is a need-based AWD system, not a purpose-built offroader. Its massive kerb weight, size and long wheelbase are penalties. Additionally, there's no proper low ratio transfer case, while the approach & departure angles are average. Still, there's no doubt that Tata has learned from Land Rover on how to cleverly use electronics to make her perform better off the road than its hardware would suggest. Let's take a look at key features: • 200 mm of ground clearance means it'll clear almost anything that you throw at it. • ,Torque-on-demand, AWD that checks the road conditions by using various sensors & distributes torque to front <-> rear wheels. Between 5 - 35% torque will be sent to the front wheels (it'll always be rear biased). • Limited slip differentials on both axles & anti-roll bars at the front and rear. • In cross-axle situations, when two diagonally opposite wheels are in the air, the torque-on-demand feature sends power to the wheels that have maximum traction. • The Hexa has approach & departure angles of 21 / 25 degrees (respectively). It has a gradeability rating of 31.5 degrees; side incline gradeability? 23 degrees. • Water wading rating of 450 mm to cross streams, ponds and (more likely) flooded roads! • The 'hill descent control' allows the car to be driven down a slope at a slow & steady pace, without the driver using the brake pedal. The descending speed can be controlled via the cruise control buttons. The system applies the brake to each wheel individually, and brakes the wheels with the most traction more. It doesn’t apply the same brake pressure on all of the wheels together – something that isn't possible with the brake pedal. If you do press the brake pedal, it'll override the hill descent control. • The ESP system helps in preventing the vehicle from fishtailing, thereby keeping it stable on descents. • The ESP will permit necessary slippage from the tyres in 'rough road' mode. • If you are starting off on loose gravel on a medium incline, the torque on demand and traction control will work collaboratively to keep the wheels from slipping. • On slippery surfaces like ice, the traction control system applies the brake to the wheels that are slipping without locking them, and redistributes the torque to the wheels that have grip to pull you ahead. We were taken on a small offroad demonstration track. After accelerating hard for a 100 yards and slamming on the brakes, it became clear that the Hexa gathers speed + stops much quicker in 'rough road' mode. In 'Auto', the car had stopped close to the cone marking the 30 yard limit, whereas in rough road mode, it stopped a long way before that! The difference is significant indeed. Must say, the MRF Wanderer S/L tyres weren't too bad either for the kind of stuff Hexa owners will put them through. The awesome ride quality of the Hexa is a bonus when roughing it out. Even while offroading, you will be more comfortable than in other stiff-riding SUVs. Further, the Hexa doesn't nosedive much under braking, nor does it lurch around excessively as it tackles dips in the road.

The solid road presence it gets is loved by most SUV buyers. Then there is the 3-litre turbo diesel engine. It has around 167bhp of power and 343Nm of torque, along with a 4x4 option, which means it has the go anywhere ability that few other SUVs possess in this segment. But the best part about the SUV remains the fact that it can seat seven occupants in a nice and luxurious cabin which comes with plenty of bells and whistles to keep the passengers happy on those long journeys. Also, being a ,Toyota, means that reliability is very good and if something does go wrong, it will not cost the earth to fix it. Another plus of being a Toyota is the fact that resale values will be strong, so when you want to buy a new car, the Fortuner will give you a decent amount back. All in all, you just can’t go wrong with the Fortuner. ,Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, · Price starts from: Rs 23.5lakh · Engine: 2.5-litre DOHC common-rail DI-D · Power: 176bhp Torque: 400Nm · Fuel economy: 12.00kmpl The Pajero name is easily one of the most respected in SUV circles around the world and the ,Pajero Sport, is one of the most practical SUVs in India with ample room all across the cabin. The cabin materials used are probably the best at this price point on any SUV. It comes with a thoroughly modern, common-rail-diesel-engine. The 2.5-litre engine makes around 176bhp of power. The engine is supreme on refinement making the cabin a very quiet place to be in. Another USP of the car is Mitsubishi’s ‘Super Select’ transfer case allows you to shift from two-wheel drive high to four-wheel drive high on the move (upto speeds as high as 100kph). The car comes loaded with equipment too. You get climate control, leather seats, alloy wheels and a lot more. ,Audi Q3S, · Price starts from: Rs 25.3lakhs · Engine: 2-litre diesel · Power: 144bhp Torque: 320Nm · Fuel economy: 12.00kmpl The ,Q3S, is currently the cheapest way to get into an Audi SUV. It has the same 2-litre diesel engine which makes 144bhp as the regular car but comes with a manual gearbox, no LED lamps and a much plainer looking cabin as well. But there is no dearth of talent. Just like most Audi’s, cabin quality is top notch and there are plenty of features to keep you occupied with. The diesel engine is one of the punchiest in its class and the six-speed manual gearbox is easy to operate. You get two rows of seats with ample legroom as well. But it isn’t as large as most other SUVs, which means that this car is ideal for town travel and will be good for those who love driving themselves. If you want a posh SUV within a Rs 30 lakh budget you have few better choices than the Q3S.

What is the problem of land reforms in Zimbabwe?

Tendai has it right except for some fundamental flaws. One first needs to understand the deeper malaise, this is well described in The Alfred Marshall Lecture ,Kleptocracy And Divide-And-Rule, (Daron Acemoglu Massachusetts Institute of Technology, James A. Robinson University of California Berkeley and Thierry Verdier DELTA-ENS). This is not about Zimbabwe but applies perfectly. The problem of land reforms in Zimbabwe ,is primarily one of economics. The Alfred Marshall Lectureship was established at the Cambridge University Faculty of Economics in 1932 in memory of Alfred Marshall, arguably the founder of modern economic science and undisputedly one of its pioneers. Under University statutes, it is concerned with ‘a subject in Economics, or in Economic History, or in some kindred subject’. The establishment of these lectures institutionalised an earlier practice of inviting a distinguished economist, generally from outside Cambridge, to give a number of lectures during Full Term. The Marshall Lectures have twin aims – first, to present and to elucidate research developments in Economics to a wide audience; while at the same time to educate and to inspire students to study Economics in all its facets. To be invited to present an Alfred Marshall lecture can be regarded as one of the highest recognitions of achievement in the field of economics. The ,Kleptocracy And Divide-And-Rule, lecture was also presented as the Marshall Lecture at the European Economic Association’s Annual meetings in Stockholm, August 24, 2003. Kleptocracy And Divide-And-Rule, under Robert Mugabe has been disastrous for economic performance and caused the impoverishment of the citizens. The right to rule was ascribed to a person rather than to an office, despite the official existence of a written constitution; the state was controlled and run for the benefit of Mugabe and a small group, who used their power to transfer a large fraction of society’s resources to themselves. For example in the initial willing buyer/willing seller Land Reform they cherry picked farms for themselves (which created an argument as to who should pay). Mugabe dominated the state apparatus and stood above its laws. Relationships of loyalty and dependence pervaded a formal political and administrative system, and officials occupied bureaucratic positions less to perform public service than to acquire personal wealth and status. Mugabe and his inner circle undermined the effectiveness of the nominally modern state administration by using it for systematic patronage and clientelist practices in order to maintain political order. They implemented highly inefficient economic policies, expropriated the wealth of citizens, and used the proceeds for their own glorification or consumption. They borrowed to such an extent to feed their own gravy train that in 1996 the debt servicing alone exceeded the gnp -this source of easy money dried up. ,This caused dissent. ,To appease the war veterans Mugabe printed money for pensions which they quickly squandered, looking for more loot they coveted the white farms which were highly profitable and the mainstay of the economy. Whilst these inefficient policies were in place to transfer resources from the population to the ruling group they also ensured their political survival by creating an environment where any group that became politically mobilized against the ruler was punished, while those that remained loyal were rewarded. The emerging MDC was at the core of the dissent and a large hunk of the white farmers were funding the MDC, a CNN broadcast showing them writing cheques to the new party apparently had more to do with the ,Fast Track Land Reform, then anything else (Mugabe apparently loved to watch CNN and was livid). One also needs to have some understanding of the Modus Operandi behind a facade of Land Reform ,Zimbabwe: new documents claim to prove Mugabe ordered Gukurahundi killings, These were very effective in stamping out dissent and the international community had turned a blind eye. Similar tactics were applied to this new problem. Most frightening were the methods to stamp out dissent manifested through discriminatory policies, such as human rights violations, surveillance abuse, police brutality, imprisonment, involuntary settlement, stripping of citizen's rights, and violent action or terror such as the murder, summary executions, torture, forced disappearance and other extrajudicial punishment of MDC political activists, dissidents, dissenting white farmers and the general population. Political repression was sanctioned and organised by the state and may constitute state terrorism, genocide, politicide or crimes against humanity. Systemic and violent political repression is a typical feature of dictatorships, totalitarian states and similar regimes. Acts of political repression were be carried out by secret police forces (CIO), army, paramilitary groups (green bombers and war veterans) and death squads. Cherry picked white farms were kept for himself (apparently his wife Gucci Grace was very greedy) and dished out as ,spoils of war, rewards for loyalty. The interest was in the loot not the work, most were asset stripped and run into the ground. I visited one of the farms that had been taken leaving the farmer at the homestead (I gather he also lost that later) as I was keen on using it as a place to stay for anyone wanting to see the solar eclipse (that project failed dismally). There was a lovely view down towards a river. “What is going to happen to food security - do the sums” he said “That field we targeted 7 tonnes/hectare maize (corn) and our minimum was 5, that group down there has built their huts in the field, the guy works for Zesa (utility company) and its his small house (dump for his mistress), he only comes on Saturdays in his Pajero. They might get 1 1/2 tonnes/hectare from the remainder and that’s only because we put $5 million into land prep, next year he may get 1/2 tonne. Does he care? No. Multiply that scenario by 4000 farms” Later on I had to do some work near Beatrice and wanted to hire some of his equipment for the job - the farmer told me that they had slaughtered 4000 breeding cows in the Beatrice area alone. “What has that done to the future of the beef industry?” The dissent was effectively stamped out in what used to be the white farms and the few remaining white farms were loyal and captured in the political gatekeeping that was already well established with the peasant farmers. Maintaining support for the Mugabe and his inner circle was fairly simple in communal areas because an individual is beholden for his/her very survival on the Sabuk, in turn with the chief and then to Mugabe and his inner circle so everyone has been captured in the system of “absolute control” normally associated with dystopias. Gatekeepers are individuals or institutions which control access to positions of power, reward/punish in access to resources and regulate the flow of information. The positions of highest authority usually go to individuals that are obsequious (obedient or attentive to an excessive or servile degree) and especially a Supergrass, filling the role of informer and betrayer. A grass gatekeeper would be a gatekeeper who also betrays (“a sell-out”) his peers by reporting dissent or, in some cases, lying so as to betray a peer as an enemy of Mugabe (“MDC”) and his inner circle for personal reasons. A Supergrass gatekeeper will be a grass gatekeeper in a position of high authority
