My opinion is there are 3 motors i would consider the most reliable and this is from the block to the components as well. Firstly my personal favourite is the K series petrol engine from Toyota. I have owned 4 vehicles with different types of K engines and not one major problem with them. The K series motors started in the first generation corollas and finished in the last generation Toyota Townace here in Australia. The K series motors have a few different sizes, (1) k at one litre 2k at 1.1 litre 3k at 1166cc 4k at 1.3lt 5k at 1.5lt And the biggest at 1.8lt the 7k The 3k had the most rounded reliability with simple points ignition and billy basic carburettor. My first Corolla had a 3k in it and never let me down. It had enough power in standard specs but i did the engine up for rallying with a basic cam upgrade and weber carburettors and exhaust done going from 56hp to 98hp. Plenty for what i was using it for and no dramas with the standard internals even at 8000rpm. I have seen some extreme 3k motors done up to 170hp and a rev limit of 10,000 rpm. These engines never easily wore out except for people not taking care of them. The KE30 series corollas were a great and reliable car mostly due to the combination of a good basic motor and a simple yet strong enough drive train. Second motor is the VW flat four from the early generations beetles. Same thing basic and easily repaired, i do not have much experience with VW engines but many who do sware by them and there are still un-rebuilt units still driving around. The last motor is the Isuzu 4j Diesel series motors. The 2.8lt 4JB1 is know as the million kilometre motor here in Australia. Fitter to the Isuzu Rodeo also badged as a Holden Rodeo here in Australia and chevy amigo/rodeo/pickup around the world. I have seen many still driving around Australia with some pretty high kilometres on them the highest being 750,000 km with only an injector and fuel pump rebuild after 500,000km. I currently own a 2002 Holden Rodeo with the first generation 4JH1 3.0lt and the only fault in this entire engine is the electronic controlled fuel pump which i had to replace the electronics in it at 250,000km. There is a conversion using the 4JB1 injection system to negate the issues with the electronics. Coupled with a truck drive train and strong body and chassis these rodeos are some of the most reliable utility vehicles around but most people do not like them for their lack of modifications available for extreme off-roading and simplistic interior but highly suitable for my needs and likes. I have driven mine all over this country through all types of weather conditions and terrains. I will keep this car for a long time. Whilst there are other good enginesout there from my experience and information these 3 motors are the most reliable. Second note these other motors are worth mentioning. Datsun L series and A series Honda civic 1st generation Nissan TD42 diesel Toyota 1H/2H diesel, 3b diesel, 1HZ diesel, Hilux Y series petrols, 4A series petrols, Mini’s early 4 cylinders in Coopers and Mokes Mitsubishi’s 4G series (most weren't taken care of seeing one had not had an oil change in over 75,000km and most not changed for up to 30,000km) some vehicles that had these motors were quite unpopular. Mitsubishi 4M40 diesel And Isuzu’s 4BD1 3.9lt diesel which in Australia was heavily used by the Australian Defence Force for many years in the highly modified Landrover Perentie 4x4 and 6x6 for its simplicity and reliability. Hope you have enjoyed this blog. All the best, Stefan, Australia.
It depends mainly on the rules and regulations set by the country but here in Pakistan there are no such rules. I sold my grandfather's ,1970, ,Toyota Corolla KE30, in 2018. In the 48 years it was in the family it was maintained regularly and driven with care. It had its meter reset once after it reached ,999,999km, ,(621,370mi), and then drove ,254,500km (158,138mi), further so in total it was driven ,1,254,500km (779,510mi), without any major issues. It had its engine out once and a complete restoration just to remove any hidden rust. Up until last year the new owner was driving it around the city, don't know anything about it now. In the end it all depends on how the car is kept and taken care of besides the rules and regulations set by the country.
As a veteran of many engine swaps, I think I can help you start. First, determine your budget, then double it. Next, your ability. If you cannot weld AND fabricate, triple your doubled budget. You might be thinking, “Hey, it would be cheaper just to buy a more powerful car.”. Congratulations, you're learning already.
