toyota corolla obama Q&A Review

What makes the F-22s so expensive (US $400 millions)?

Your number is a bit high, I calculate about $360 million. They are so expensive because only 186 production aircraft were produced before politicians killed the program, thus all $67.3 billion total cost of the program (R&D cost + production) is spread over only those few aircraft. The “flyaway“ cost, meaning how much each plane cost to buy without factoring in the program cost was $150 million and dropping in 2009. to give a practical example take a relatively cheap new car, a 2019 Toyota Corolla has an MSRP of $19600. You can easily walk into most dealerships and drive away for $18,000 or less. According to Auto Blog:,Why Does It Cost So Much For Automakers To Develop New Models? The bare minimum to develop a new model is around $1billion if things like engines and transmission carry over, it can be 6 times as much if everything is all new. Toyota can sell them so cheap because the will sell hundreds of thousands of them world wide. Lets go on the cheap end of the development cost and say Toyota spent $2billion developing the New Corolla which was a US only model. After building the first 186, the government cancels the rest of the order, and this car is not allowed to be sold outside the US. That exact same base Corolla now costs $10.75Million dollars ,PER CAR! So yes, The Obama administration screwed the military and the taxpayer royally by cancelling the F-22 early. It is only by sheer luck (and Lockheed Martin smartly decentralizing production to most congressional districts after the F22 debacle) the F-35 didn’t suffer the same fate leaving us without a 5th gen fighter. Spreading production that much was smart but self serving and increased costs and delays but worked. So if the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the road to heaven likely has plenty of Bad intentions under the path.

Why does the Toyota Corolla styling differ between Europe and US?

To understand that, you need to go deeper about Japan car makers. The same thing doesn’t happen with European giants like VW. Their Polo has the same styling everywhere, except their interior quality. The same is true for General Motors. Its Cruze (Daewoo Lacetti) is similar everywhere, almost uniform. So, why Japan bothered making 2 versions of the same car and increase fixed costs of maintaining separate production line? I haven’t reach the conclusion yet, but most of the answers to this question that I read in many auto magazine articles are very typical, simpistic, and comes from the writer’s own logical thought process. So, here I go on my own attempt to explain it for you: When Japanese car manufacturers grew into a globalised dominant giant corporations back in the 1980s, they got confused with all the excess that was granted to them. If you follow Japanese automotive’s Domestic Market craze, you’ll realise that they are quite chaotic. Let’s take the crazy Mazda as an example. Currently, they have surpassed their peak back in 1994 thanks to their line of SkyActiv cars. Their 1.2 million cars today consisted of mostly 8 main models, 2, 3, 5, 6, CX-3, CX-5, CX-9, and MX-5. The rest are specific regional models. But what did they had back then? 17 models including the famous RX-7! That’s correct. They even maintained more than 4 marques, probably aspiring to be a mini-GM from the far east. They had Autozam, Mazda, Eunos, ɛ̃fini, and Amati. You probably wondered less on why they finally crashed back then. But it’s not that simple. As if they never learn from their mistake, Mazda slowly creep into releasing more irrelevant and adventurous models. The CX-4, CX-8 released in 2017 is probably just a sign. If you think of Mazda as just a small player, well indeed they are. Mazda was and is the 4th largest Japanese car maker after Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. Mitsubishi and Suzuki shrinked, while the top 4 l, Daihatsu, and Subaru generally sticks to their place. Imagine what Toyota was like back then. They even maintained 4 unique separate dealerships to this day: Toyota store, Toyopet, Corolla store, and Netz. Other than that, you’ll know they have Lexus, but that’s not Toyota. So, if you want to buy a Corolla in Japan, where will you go? To Corolla store, of course! But being a practical European, you won’t see the familiar Corolla. They only sell the one that is familiar to us, Southeast Asians and Americans, and the rest of the world. The Japanese dub them “Corolla Axio”. Austrlians and Kiwis will be confused too, “that’s not Corolla!” To find Japanese, European, Aussie amd Kiwi’s Corolla, you’ll have to go to Toyopet store. Like the Europeans, the Japanese call them Toyota Auris. The Japanese adopted this European car as their JDM model (just like how Honda ditched American Accord and adopt Euro Accord / Acura TL as the JDM Accord), and make them in their home base in Toyota city, Aichi too. It is originally from UK, specifically from Burnaston, Derbyshire. While the global American Corolla is virtually made everywhere, from Venezuela to China to India to Thailand to Brazil and finally to California (Fremont) and Mississippi (Blue Springs). So to answer the common explanation: No, it is not just US vs. Europe Traditionally, Japanese car models has always been US and Japan models vs. Europe and the world’s models. However since mid 2000s, Japanese car makers started preferring their European-developed cars, so it is US and the world vs. Europe and Japan. Is there any specific reason why? I don’t know, honestly. Is it the regulations? I hate to say this, but US has the srictest safety standard in the world with their NHTSA’s notoriously difficult small overlap test, which has no equivalent elsewhere, even in the EU. Of course, while domestic US manufacturers pass this test, the one that aced it are as always, foreign, like Volvo, Hyundai, and Mercedes-Benz. Environmentally, California has the world’s strictest emission regulation with their SULEV and ULEV category. Yes, say what you like about US, but it is true, even for me as a British-biased guy who also love to poke fun at the US. There is no economical reason for Toyota to make their global mass market model to follow US’ strict requirements. And of course they don’t. Toyota swapped engines and components for cheaper markets. It seems that the Japanese don’t just follow the normal economic theory convention of standardising production line, globalised supply chain, achieving economic of scale by uniforming the car designs, making it having more interchangeable shared components, and all that theoretical stuffs. Instead, they keep everything unique and domesticated. So, why they keep the styling though? There is one explanation that I can gladly accept at the moment: American cars are big. Here is an American Honda Odyssey: Length: 5.161 mm, Width: 1.994 mm, Height: 1.735 mm This is Odyssey for the rest of the world: Length: 4.830 mm (331 mm, a foot shorter); Width: 1.820 mm (174 mm, almost 7 inches narrower); Height: 1.685 mm (50 mm, almost 2 inches shorter). Yes, you may now joke about typically fat and oversized Americans. The American one is powered by 3.5 litre V6, while the global one use the smaller 2.4 litre in-line 4. So, the global+American Corolla here (Available in Europe as the reluctant model, even the Japanese refused to sell one domestically): Photo by ,Petar Milošević And the European/Australian one (available in US as the fancified “iM” model after Scion is closed): Photo by ,Johann Jaritz Why? Space in countries with overly developed infrastructure Because European and Japanese roads are smaller. Space are valuable in those overly developed countries. American and global Corollas are simply too big as a “compact car” as the original classification of the Corollas for Europe and Japan. The current Japanese Corolla even loosened all the “muscular” body work in order to keep the overall car width within check: The Global Corolla is 1.775 mm wide, the European one is 1.760 mm (15 mm narrower), while the Japanese one is 1.695 mm (75 mm narrower), making other cars ridiculously bloated in comparison. Why do cars bloat in size? That explains another reason why European and American model differs: Emission regulations in the USA and its correlation with car dimensions American vehicle emissions regulation are categorised by car size. Every year, the government followed the established framework, that is to tighten the law by making pollution standards stricter for that particular car size every year. This is why Toyota Camry has grown in size from compact car in 1991, to mid-size sedan category back in 1999 into its current full size / executive sedan category. The original 1980s Camry is smaller than the current day Corolla by dimension. This is all done to escape the pollution curb and the heavy penalty for breaching the emission standards, which could affect its retail price. Rumour said that Donald Trump tried to reverse or slow down the progression of this law, which Obama already tried to do back then to prevent the car from bloating even more. This is the first Camry that is simillar in size to our current day 2017 Corolla: Yes, it took us 20 years to have cheaper yet bigger cars. Sure, the current Toyota Corolla is far roomier than this 1995–1996 Toyota Camry, and that might be a welcomed improvement. But to just think of the size growth is simply mind-boggling, imagine how overly cramped parking space in the future would feel. Another reason why: Growing Global economy and increasing population Elsewhere around the world, unlike the shrinking Japan and Europe, population and economy grows rapidly, increasing the demand for bigger and luxurious cars, because traditionally in these parts of the world, extra space is still deemed as luxury. However, since the infrastructure is still catching up and the regulations are not that well developed, we find the well-designed and the tuned for better handling European models to be less appealing. For certain capture markets, the European models might be more suitable. So, like I said in the beginning. There are no clear answer why. Toyota even changed their minds several times about what should differ between each markets. they aren’t even sure themselves. I am just trying to explain why each Toyota’s operations in each market think that they should bring this model, and why Toyota global agreed to their assessment at that time.

If/when a Democrat gets back into office and restores Obama emission standards, will a 2019 Toyota fail to meet the standards?

No. The 2019 Toyota Corolla already met the standards which were set in 2019. Whatever future standards their might be are irrelevant.

What's a good reliable first car? Which cars or models should you steer clear from?

Early 90s accords early 90s Volvo’s early 90s Toyota Corolla. D15 EG civic hatchback (1991 to 1995) is a good car and will get close to 40mpg. All very good relatively cheap cars. Before Obama trashed all the used cars with cash for clunkers and ruined the used car market (hurting the low and middle class and subsidizing giant corporations…. Yay socialism ) I was able to get my first 92 accord for $600 and my second for $200, great cars. Those were the days. Now anything that barely runs is going for $1200 and up. I’d steer clear of any Mustangs or sports cars as kids tend to crash them because they don’t know how to drive yet. No nissans built after 1998 they’re crap. No fiats Hyundai’s or Kias. They’re throwaway cars. I would not get any 1990s Chrysler dodge or Mitsubishi products. Junk. If you’re able to spend a bit more go for a newer Toyota Corolla. Get a stick shift, it’ll last longer and the kid can learn something most people can’t do nowadays. Do not buy anything with a CVT or dry Dual Clutch transmission. THEY ARE TRASH and will fail far too soon. Look for cars with transmissions built by AISIN if you must buy an Automatic car. Toyota uses them but they also are in other makes. They’re much more reliable than Honda Automatics. Honda makes their own transmissions and they’re definitely the weak point of the cars.

Is there room at the bottom of the market (like Hyundai and Yugo were in the 80's) for an auto manufacturer that can produce a line of regulatorily "barely legal" vehicles that don't change from year to year?

Japan does this. They have cars that are under 600 cc's. They're cheaper to insure, easy to park in the city and keeping them on the road is very inexpensive. They've even got a little pickup trucks and work vans. I personally think it's a good idea. But in America, where I live there is not much of a market for that sort of thing. There was an infamous remark that Obama made where he asked why “America couldn't just build the Toyota Corolla?”. It was immediately pointed out to him but the best selling vehicle in this country is a half ton pickup truck and so is the second.

Is it fair to say Hillary Clinton would be a terrific president but still a horrible presidential candidate?

Hillary Clinton would have been terrible President. People should be lighting candles in churches and thank God for Trump. I am not saying Trump is great president, I am saying she would have been worse. (knowing Quora and its netizens, this will be collapsed but here we go) Terrible track record:, She was never very good senator (she supported the Iraq war). She was terrible Secretary of State. She took immense control and pride in destabilizing Libya (from her book “ Hard Choices”). Her performance with international relations including Russian was nowhere as exemplary as she boasts. E-mail scandals are real and nothing defensible about it. She has only succeeded for herself, her career has been a global tragedy. She is responsible for uncountable deaths around the world. I don’t know if world has taken a giant puff, but what great deeds did she do? Tough Lady Hillary: ,Hillary Clinton Never Met A War She Didn't Want Other Americans To Fight,. ,We all might (emphasis on might) be staring at USA-Russia conflict right now, given her hawkish/ egotistical world view and mutual admiration between Hillary and Putin. She supported all (recent) 7 conflicts by USA. She is a woman: ,When you start electing Presidents because they are tall or short or fat or slim or have specific sexual organs; start writing obituary for that nation. Her campaign was all about feminism and breaking glass ceilings and swearing fealty to vagina. Because it is Trump, everyone is questioning even the air he is breathing. With Hillary, she would have shut down every criticism (valid or not) by weight of misogyny. She already did this with Bernie and Obama during campaign. She could have walked everyone into lava pits at vagina point. She is too motivated:, Someone who is that motivated to sit in Oval office should not be in it. Someone who desires power that much can’t possibly be good for anyone. The ticker tape parade: ,America would have been in euphoria to put first skirt in the house. And would start bombing all the nations by next morning who never had lady premiers. Hillary would have got Nobel prize, i can bet my Toyota corolla, Nobel prize committee would have fallen over themselves to achieve this. For this reason alone , i thank God she didn’t get elected. Her flawed moral compass: ,Why would a feminist leader would marry and stick around serial sex offender. Bill Clinton is Bill Cosby with superpowers. She supported all the wars she could. She didn’t support any progressive idea until it became convenient and popular. And many many more. Her hubris puts god kings to shame. She never took responsibility for her loss , it was never her fault and she believes it; she would have evaded any Presidential backfire also in the same spirit. She is too powerful: ,Clintons are already too powerful without office. There was no real candidate to challenge her last time. And democratic party sold their soul to devil to put her on the ticket. There is only one proven election fixing and collusion that happened and it was Democratic party elections. She actually has influence and connection to get any policy passed. On Capitol Hill, sometime no work is good work. Clinton Dynasty:, There should be a law forbidding so closely related people from sitting on the throne. It is becoming too dynastic. Can’t a nation of 300+ million people find any candidates other than 2 families. Thank God for Trump, otherwise such family dynasty would have become accepted and successful phenomenon. And if she can, she will run for the seat again( again betting my Toyota Corolla), this above all terrifies me. For me reason 5 and 8 are sufficient deterrent to her presidency.

If what the White House says is true re. Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley's statement that "This media chatter is ridiculous--Pres Trump is not firing Dr. Fauci", then why did Trump retweet a user who said, it's "Time to #FireFauci"?

Lou, I don’t know why you asked me a month after originally posting this question or why you’re doing it at 2 a.m., but may I suggest you move on? It never amazes me the lengths and the intellectual contortions through which the media and anti-Trumpers will go to bash the man. They make Olga Corbett look like an arthritic old grandma. Claiming that Trump’s retweeting something with which he partially agrees implies total support, is like taking his photo with a Toyota Corolla in the background with a YES WE CAN bumper sticker and claiming he supports Obama. The tweet we retweeted made some sense, but supported #firefauci. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate President Donald Trump's skill in audience control to Barack Obama's?

President Obama was—and still is—a master communicator of ideas, ideals, and over the years has provided inspiration and hope to millions of Americans. Amazingly enough, here, in what has now been arguably proven a nation still struggling with its history of deeply rooted racism, he was elected to the office of the Presidency twice. His books, all best-sellers and penned by himself, are well-written, well-reasoned, and a joy to read. I not only attended gatherings where President Obama spoke, I followed his speeches, press conferences, and addresses at home and abroad, and more often than not, was moved beyond words, inspired to be a better citizen, and buoyed by the obvious good faith, superior intelligence, and utter ,decency, of the man leading my country. Further, while President Obama often used language tailored to his different audiences, he never descended into name-calling, smears, innuendo or flagrant lies. People attending his rallies have recounted being held spellbound by his eloquence and palpable sincerity, how vast arenas would fall silent as all hung on his every word. President Obama held the room by force of his common-sense, rational approach to addressing our nation’s problems; as though he was talking directly to each attendee with compassion and encouragement, he motivated them to GOTV on a scale never seen before in American electoral history—twice—and did it both times without illegal assistance from an American adversary. I give President Obama a 10. Donald Trump is no Barack Obama; that much is obvious. He does, however, possess a similar native ability to “work” a room. His rallies are packed with people who would drive a Toyota Corolla through raging floodwaters to be in attendance, and demonstrate unwavering support for anything that falls out of the man’s mouth. DJT does not have the same mass appeal President Obama enjoyed, but his communication skills, while primitive, are more than effective enough to keep his supporters highly motivated. When observing his rally-goers, the cameras pan sizeable crowds appearing absolutely enthralled, yelling enthusiastic, angry agreement with his every unhinged rant, wacky conspiracy theory(s), and lie-ridden utterance; they cheer when told, chant on demand, and attack dissidents when commanded to do so. You gotta give DJT credit for knowing his audience. He manipulates it masterfully and with seeming spontaneity, much like a country revival preacher skillfully ropes in those unfortunates desperate enough to seek miracle cures. Honestly, it seems to me he could exhort those crowds to run out in traffic, and like lemmings, most would gladly hurry over a cliff. DJT does not, however, seem to know when it’s time to bring the show to a thundering conclusion, much less leave the crowd hungry for more. Increasingly, as he rambles on past the hour and a half mark—spouting non-sequiturs, threatening his enemies, telling self-laudatory (and largely apocryphal) tales wherein everyone calls him “sir”, and whining about Democrats—the rooms begin to empty. I guess even for his ardent supporters, they’re willing to spend only so much time chanting, cheering, attacking, and offering up pledges of undying love, and at some point, tune out, walk out, and go back to their everyday lives. So while I am impressed with Donald Trump’s unarguable ability to work a crowd, given the fact those crowds seem primarily there not to be informed or uplifted, but to enjoy the spectacle; that when the spectacle gets boring and repetitive, they disperse, I have to give DJT a 7 for not knowing when to shut up. President Obama wins. Again.

Why are almost all cars one color instead of cars that are two tone or more?

Cost engineers now “Rule the Design”. EPA regulations have banned hood ornaments, door handles, even Chrome plating! Now I can take my pick of white, black, grey, or dark red or blue. Interiors only available in black or grey vinyl. Special order? “What’s That?”! You want a Chevy pickup with the 3.0L inline six diesel? Well it comes on one body style, take it or leave it. You forget, FIAT now owns what’s left of Chrysler, and builds most vehicles in Brampton, Ontario and Saltillo, Mexico. GM is now “UAW Motors” as the United Auto Workers Union owns it. Obama gave it to them! Boy, Imagine if Trump gave it back to us GM stockholders? How did he get the authority to take away my GM stock? Ford will only build one “CAR” from now on, the Mustang. They have to supply Shelby Motors, and keep their brand in NASCAR! How Toyota gets into NASCAR amazes me! They don’t build a Toyota car with a V8! Ever see a stock Toyota Corolla leading the pack as the Pace Car? Looks like a toy car in front of the race cars!

How do you feel about Trump rolling back Obama administration clean car standards?

Why do people assume that lower fuel efficiency requirements equal more pollution. The rollback is not going to lower the existing standards, just prevent the unattainable demands that were put into place by people who have less than no idea of what is required to achieve those fairy tale numbers. I’m sure that American technology could do it, but then who would be able to afford a $150,000 Toyota Corolla, and forget about ever owning a pickup truck that could tow anything larger than a lawn tractor. Oh yeah, those boats and RV’s and quad runners and ATVs would also cease to exist. And 4 wheel drive off road vehicles would also go the way of the Dodo bird. Every vehicle does not cruise down a highway across one of the largest countries in the world in some tiny under powered speckmobile. For every gain in one area there is a loss in some other area. Increasing fuel economy to over 50 MPG, would mean lighter, smaller vehicles with equally smaller engines laden with extremely expensive technology to provide enough horsepower, and that would increase the price of every vehicle as well as reduce its capabilities. Ever taken a family of four on a road trip in a Mini Cooper or a Honda Fit or a Ford Fiesta? All of these vehicles currently get about 26 MPG in city driving and 35 MPG highway. The proposed fuel mileage requirements would demand an additional 30% increase. The price of these tiny vehicles is already in the 15 to 25 thousand dollar base price range and that price would increase by about the same percentage to an average of $32,500! The greatest effect it would have on pollution would be from the fewer number of drivers that could actually afford to drive one. So as the question was asked about clean car standards, not forcing the manufacturers to increase fuel mileage, has absolutely nothing to do with ,cleaner,. It is the transposed idea that better fuel economy means less pollution. Pollution is not an individual country’s problem, but a global problem, and currently the US has the cleanest air pollution levels per capita of any country in the world. So why should the US citizens pay billions of dollars more for vehicles that everyone ,assumes, will pollute even less, when the rest of the world is still blasting millions of metric tons of pollutants into the same air that we all breathe. Maybe the liberal global elitists should focus more on getting the major polluting countries to clean up their act before imposing “feel good” laws and taxes on itself.
