suspension test game Q&A Review

What are some really interesting facts about bridges?

The Common Wealth Games Bridge in Delhi. A private firm in contract with the government completed this 95 metre long bridge in 7 years. But this construction collapsed 9 days before the Common wealth games. Putting India to shame, the Government is not left out with options to fix this blunder. This bridge is meant to serve the pedestrians to reach the main stadium of commonwealth games. Polititians who were incharge, tried to deny their mistakes saying "The pedestrian bridge is a showpiece... Alternative ways to reach the main stadium is always available." But in real case, the alternative path way makes the audience walk more than a mile to reach the stadium. A high-level meeting was organised. The officials and the Public Works Department(PWD) decided to seek army's help to fix the bridge. An army engineering regiment (with about 800 to 1,000 men) started the work for the Common wealth bridge. "We will complete the bridge within the timeframe and hand it over to the Games organisers," a colonel-rank officer said. The army engineers estimated that it will take them five days time to install the new bridge. We know what happens when Indian Army hops into a task. India Army completes the bridge in a record time of 4 days. The Indian Army without any doubt never lets India down in any situation. I wish to share two more images which shows the passion and patriotism of the real heroes of this country. The Mission Accomplished Moments..... EDIT: This is for the common questions I got in the comments section "The bridge that army made was a temporary structure. Originally the design was to use suspension cables and no pillars at all. But as the bridge needed to be rendered usable on very short notice, the army, as a workaround, had to use pillar like support in the center and at sides. So the big steel arc was acting as a mere showpiece. The bridge was fully reconstructed after the CWG games got over and at present this bridge exists in it's originally conceived form(without any pillars).". From this we can understand how it was possible by Army men to complete the work in 3 days, Test its stability for the 4th day and open to public on the fifth day. Madras Sappers (a regiment of the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army) are the group of men who performed this feat working 24/7 to complete this for our country. The action on the private firm : It is agonising to see the private contractor who built the collapsed bridge and humiliated India is living the other way. For more details about the private firm, please find my answer on ,Dinesh Sekar's answer to What are the biggest ironies in India?, And finally, This answer has got 17K+ likes and 160K+ views. I take it as an opportunity to thank Indian Army for their work. Undoubtedly. The pride of India. A Big Salute to the army men.... Jai Hind!!!

It's 3am and you've been brought to a police station for some reason. You say, "I'm not talking without my lawyer" but you don't have a lawyer. What do you do?

It depends on “why” you were brought to the police station. My “specialty” was DUI enforcement. I can’t even remember how many times a drunk would say, “I’m not saying or doing anything until I speak with my attorney.” I would hand them back their cell phone and say, “Ok, call him.” Usually they would not know the number, so they would ask for a phone book, which I would provide. Then they would fumble around and call one of the attorneys whose ad looked impressive. Usually, they would receive voice mail and leave a message. In most cases, the attorney would not call back (remember, we are talking 230am or thereabouts). In a couple of cases, they DID know an attorney’s number. In one that I remember, his brother was an attorney. Let me be clear on MARYLAND state law when it comes to providing a breath sample for the Intoximeter test. Under MARYLAND LAW (your state or country may be different), when you sign for your driver’s license, you agree to take a breath test if ever requested to take one. Failure to do so can result in your license being suspended (when I was on the road, it would be for one year). An officer was required to read a page-long form from the Dept. of Motor Vehicles explaining the penalties that could be imposed against the person concerning suspension of their driver’s license. The suspension period could be 45 days, 60 days or 90 days if they PROVIDED a breath sample and was dependent upon the breath test results and how drunk they really were. The suspension for FAILURE to take a breath test was (if I remember correctly) six months for the first offense, 12 months for the second offense and (I think) 24 months for a third offense. They are not being charged with a criminal offense and therefore DO NOT have a right to refuse the test until they speak with an attorney. The reason being, the body will filter out the alcohol at a rate of .005 BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) per half hour. So for a drunk arrested at 2am that would be 0.08, in three hours time, it would be .05 and under the legal limit. DMV wants to know the BAC at the time of arrest or shortly thereafter. Usually, there is a limit on the time the officer has to get the breath test completed (I believe it is 90 minutes, but it’s been 10 years, so I’m not sure). The officer is required to read the form verbatim to the driver - and then ask if the driver is going to comply with the DMV directive to give a breath sample or not. It does not matter to me, as the officer, whether Junior gives a breath test or not…it’s his license and his suspension - not mine. When Junior says, “I’m not providing a breath test until I speak with my attorney,” if the night is slow and I have a breath tech right there processing other drunks, and I have to wait 30 minutes or so until it’s “my turn,” I’ll play the game and hand them the phone book. Usually, I would just mark the form as a REFUSAL and process them as I normally would. (First-time drunks get to have the option of having someone come to the station and pick them up. Second offenders and above USUALLY will be taken to the local lock-up facility and held pending a bail review hearing - and they will also be able to meet with their lawyer [or the public defender] prior to the bail review hearing.) DRUNK DRIVING is a killer. I chose that as my “focus” because I wanted to stop drunks from killing innocent people because of the drunk drivers’ bad decision. I had no patience for a DRUNK DRIVER. If they refused to take the breath test when asked - they were put down as a refusal. If they changed their mind 10 minutes later, I would say “Too late. You already made your decision.” If they were undecided as to what to do when asked, it would go down as a REFUSAL. Unless they immediately decided “I will take the test” at that moment, I processed them as a refusal. Once I started my paperwork, that was it. They were not given permission to change their mind. PERIOD. SO - I hope that answered your question. A traffic arrest is not a CRIMINAL arrest and we did not have to read the Miranda Rights to the arrestee. Only the DMV Form that dealt with taking the breath test.

Who will play as the CB for Real Madrid for the next La Liga, as Ramos got a red card and both of the defenders, Pepe and Varane, are injured?

One thing should be made clear. Sergio Ramos will probably miss the next two Liga games since it was a direct red. Here is a picture showing Real’s fixtures till 21st May Real Madrid will play Deportivo La Coruña this Wednesday and Valencia later. Ramos will probably be out of both the games. Pepe is completely ruled out for the month of April. Varane was seen training at the Valdedabas last Friday. So we can hopefully expect him to partner Nacho on Wednesday. Nacho is on ,four, yellow cards which means that he's a booking away from a possible suspension… Testing times for Zidane and Real EDIT, - The RFEF(Competition Committee of the Spanish Football Federation) have decided that Sergio Ramos will ONLY serve a ,one match ban, since the referee A J Hernandez Hernandez mentioned that it was a mistimed challenge and WASN'T reckless. This is really strange, that looked like a reckless challenge(although Messi made a meal of it). Ramos & RM very lucky this time since we have injuries & player shortage scenario in the centre back position. It's rare in direct red scenarios that a player gets away with just one game ban but it's good if you're a Real Madrid supporter like me Note, - The rule in Spain is one game ban compulsory + upto three additional games depending upon the offense. Gareth Bale missed two additional games after his show of dissent on Jonathan Viera against Las Palmas EDIT 2 - ,As expected, Varane makes it to the squad against Deportivo La Coruña, Zidane has chosen to rest Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos. Bale meanwhile is likely to miss three more weeks due to a grade 2 lesion in his left thigh

Should Sha'Carri Richardson be banned from the Olympics for testing positive for weed?

If all she did was smoke a spliff, then I oppose her suspension. It seems harsh on many levels. Marijuana is known, and probably even proven, to relieve anxiety. Her biological mother had recently passed away, so who can blame her for having a toke? Furthermore, I've yet to see any evidence that getting stoned makes you run faster. Richardson said she was in an 'emotional panic' when she used marijuana before competing in the Olympic Trials in Oregon on June 19 after a reporter told her that her biological mother had died A positive marijuana test carries a 30-day suspension from the World Anti-Doping Agency, which will keep Richardson from competing in the 100 meter dash at the Tokyo Games on July 29 However, her back-dated ban will allow her to run in the 4x100 relay on August 6, if she is picked to do so

Do NHL hockey players get tested for drug use, including pot?

The NHL does test players for drug use. It's a 20-game suspension for the first offence, 60 games for the second. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Carter Ashton is actually currently serving his suspension, but his is a fairly rare case...it's not very common for hockey players to fail drug tests. Players used to be subject to up to three "no-notice" tests each year; this may have increased since the last agreement in 2013 (see ,NHL, NHLPA sign Collective Bargaining Agreement,). Marijuana however is not on the list of banned substances in the NHL (unlike with the rest of the Big Four professional leagues in North America).

What has been the smartest/greatest innovation in Formula 1?

The obvious answer is wings, of course. Wings completely revolutionised motor racing and made the cars just so much faster round corners, it’s insane. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, as a vehicle dynamicist myself, my favourite innovation in F1 has to be ,active suspension. Although Williams didn’t exactly invent it, they mastered it. It was a Lotus and Colin Chapman thing to begin with, but when you talk about active suspension, you talk about that ’92 season and the Williams FW14B. If you don’t know what active suspension is, it is a suspension technology that predicts bumps and undulations in the track surface to control the ride height, thus maximising grip. Predicts. ,So it’s active, not reactive. Photo : Reddit Coming into the ’92 season, Williams were sitting on a big decision - go with the usual passive suspension or dive in with the active suspension that’s been in development and isn’t tried and tested. They decided to go with the latter. Interestingly, Williams F1 driver Nigel Mansell was previously public with his hate for the active suspension. But now, he was beginning to take to it. It was about to become his best friend. In fact, he had a reputation for not caring much about pre-season testing either. But at the start of the ’92 season, he’d suddenly taken to the active system and was grinding out laps in testing, more laps than anyone else. And when he drove the active car, that was it for Nige. He loved it. My God, it was quick. It wasn’t the most reliable, but Mansell and everyone on the team immediately knew they were at an advantage with the active system on their car. Just manage the reliability and we’ll be faster than anyone else by a country mile. And Nigel Mansell caught onto this very very quickly. He knew this was a huge opportunity for him to dominate his way to a world championship. His only problem? The guy in the other car with the same system - his team-mate, Ricardo Patrese. Ruin him. Make sure he doesn’t like the active suspension system. And that’s what Mansell did. He upped his game to a whole new level. Left no stone unturned in preperation, and that included psychologically playing his team-mate as well. Any opportunity he got, he talked about how the active suspension suited him and not Patrese, how his aggressive driving style was what was needed to master the active system etc etc. The psychological warfare was well underway even before the season had begun. And did it work? Yes. The first race of the 1992 season at Kyalami for the South African Grand Prix, Nigel Mansell was on pole. 0.7 seconds faster than Ayrton Senna. What about Patrese? 4th, a full 1.5 seconds slower than his team-mate. In the race, Patrese made use of his fast active suspension car but could only manage 2nd - 25 seconds behind Mansell. And that set the tone for the season. Nigel Mansell was on pole for a scarcely believable 14 races out of 16. And he won 9 out of those 14 races, absolutely running away with the championship. 108 points for the season, with Patrese finishing second with 58. Throughout the season, Patrese never felt comfortable with the active suspension system. Not like Nigel Mansell did anyway. Active suspension was an amazing innovation. But it was a brute. It had to be tamed. Nigel Mansell recognised this. And he did. Nigel Mansell and the Williams active suspension - the domination of ‘92. Active suspension was banned because it was too good. The FIA decided it was a driver aid and that it was making the cars way too fast around the corners, making safety a concern. That awkward moment when you get banned because you’re too good. Thanks for the A2A, ,Ojas Pendharkar,.

Who are some famous people whose careers got ruined because they are jerks?

Jenrry Mejia In 2014, Mejia was 25 years old and had established himself as the closer for the New York Mets, recording 28 saves in 31 chances. On April 11, 2015, Major League Baseball suspended him for 80 games after he tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug stanozolol. In July, having finished his suspension, he returned to the team — and was promptly suspended again for 162 games for using the same drug again, losing the closer position to Jeurys Familia in the process. In spite of the suspension, the Mets re-signed him to a one-year contract for 2016 that would have earned him over $1 million. He rewarded them a month later by testing positive a third time and was banned from the sport for life. He will not be eligible to apply for reinstatement until 2018.

How effective is the Kobayashi Maru as a training exercise when everyone knows it is an unbeatable scenario in Star Trek?

Hang on just a minute here. Why do you think everyone knows the scenario is unwinnable? Let’s re-watch the original Kobayashi Maru. You know, the one from 1982 that involves actual professional officers and officer candidates, instead of a rebel-without-a-cause frat boy. SAAVIK: Permission to speak candidly, sir? KIRK: Granted. SAAVIK: I don't believe this was a fair test of my command abilities. KIRK: And why not? SAAVIK: Because ...there was no way to win. KIRK: A no-win situation is a possibility every commander may face. Has that never occurred to you? SAAVIK: No sir. It has not. KIRK: How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life, wouldn't you say? SAAVIK: As I indicated, Admiral, that thought had not occurred to me. KIRK: Well, now you have something new to think about. Carry on., Don’t know about you, but it sure doesn’t sound to me like Saavik knew the test was unwinnable. See, here’s the thing. The test proctors, led here by Captain Spock, know it's unwinnable. People who have taken it before, like Admiral Kirk, know it's unwinnable. But the cadet being tested ,doesn’t, ,and for good reason. You might want to think of this in gaming terms. There’s a term in tabletop gaming called a “,Killer Game Master,”, or a “Killer DM” if you’re playing ,Dungeons & Dragons,. You see, the idea in a tabletop game is that it’s supposed to be fun both for the GM and the players, but in this case the GM has set themselves against the players and is deliberately making the scenario unnecessarily hard. If you’re playing a game like ,Call of Cthulhu,, this is ,almost, a feature rather than a bug (PC death or insanity is expected, but there’s limits, which we’ll get to in the next paragraph), but ,CoC, isn’t typical. For the players to be able to roleplay effectively, they need a level of willing suspension of disbelief, and that relies in turn on an unspoken contract that the GM will adjudicate the scenario fairly and not deliver a challenge the PCs cannot overcome with some creative thinking and luck with the dice. Otherwise, the gameplay ceases to be ,player character versus scenario, and becomes ,player versus GM,. That’s what happened with “,Old Man Henderson,”, which is the frickin’ hilarious story of how a ,CoC, player retaliated against a killer GM. And it’s what happened with Kirk when he took the test: he realized the computer was cheating to make him lose, so on his third attempt he cheated right back. Which one could argue is a good thing—there’s a funny scene in ,X-Wing: Wraith Squadron, by Aaron Allston where Wedge argues to a pilot trainee that a soldier ,should, learn to cheat, , —but it’s not exactly what the school administrators had in mind. Now, look at the stated purpose of the Kobayashi Maru scenario. Put simply, ,it’s a test of character,, cleverly disguised as a training sim. And that means the cadet has to believe the scenario is for realsies. ,They have to roleplay as the captain of a starship., It’s exactly the same psychology as goes into a holonovel or a D&D session. But if they know going in that they won’t be allowed to win, the RP’ing becomes much more difficult. So, quite simply, ,unless you’ve already been through the scenario, you’re not allowed to know it’s unwinnable,. The proctors and past graduates are sworn to secrecy, which is made easier by the fact that only the cadets on command track are actually tested.
