The heavy rain exceeding the average monthly rainfall record within two hours was the cause of the flash floods in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Minister of Environment and Water Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man announced in a press conference that the rainfall readings recorded at Taman Desa Smart Station in Kuala Lumpur was 106.5 mm and 155 mm at the Air Panas Station during the two hours.
“Within a year, the rainfall reading is usually recorded at 2,500 mm. So, the average rainfall reading a month is 200 mm. However, within the two hours of rainfall yesterday, the readings were recorded at 206 mm.
“This has overwhelmed the existing drainage systems as the water capacity far exceeds its capabilities causing flash floods within the area.”
Tuan Ibrahim also noted that as of 11.30 pm on 7-March-2022, water levels in the Gombak River in Jalan Tun Razak Station remains at an alarming level of 31.99 m.
Meanwhile, water levels of the same river at the Jalan Parlimen and Klang River at the Tun Perak Bridge are recorded at 30.38 m and 30.12 m respectively. The high-water levels are the cause of the flash floods at the Besraya Highway car park.
About 103 homes in Kampung Perik and Kampung Pasir Baru were affected by the flash floods.
Tuan Ibrahim advises the public, especially those who live in the low lands to always be on alert during the heavy rain.
“Everyone is advised to always be alert and pay attention to the sound of flood warning sirens. If heavy rain and high water levels continue, they must be prepared to move to a safe space and comply with the instructions of the local authorities.”
