We are living in unusual times. The shortage in supply of new cars mean that this accident-damaged, almost-new Mazda CX-50 will be auctioned off with an estimated starting price that’s USD 1,100 higher than a brand new one.

The on-going shortage in automotive semiconductor parts (which won’t go away until 2024, at least) coupled with the situation in Ukraine, a major supplier of automotive wire harnesses, has resulted in unusually long waiting period for many new cars.

As a result, used car prices have been going up. The Mazda CX-50 is no different.

In the US, prices for the Mazda CX-50 ranges from USD 26,800 for the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder variant, while the range topping turbochaged 2.5-litre variant starts at USD 41,550.

This accident-damaged unit listed on US salvage and used cars auction platform Copart (erroneously marked as a Mazda CX-5), picked up by Carscoops, is the turbocharged variant.

Despite the damage, Copart is listing the vehicle with an estimated value of USD 42,658, that’s USD 1,108 more than a new car, excluding repair cost, which will be quite substantial.

Although the damage to the front looks minor, damage to the rear section is quite bad. It appears that the car was rear-ended in slow traffic, before hitting another vehicle in front.

Not to be confused with the Mazda CX-60 (which will be heading to Malaysia), the CX-50 is a USA (and Canada)-only model, produced in USA for the North American market at the Mazda-Toyota jointly owned manufacturing plant in Alabama.

It’s a 5-seater SUV, just like the Mazda CX-5, but positioned higher, as a more premium product.
