Geely Emgrand is the first Geely sedan for Philippines
Will challenge Vios and City
Up to 6 airbags and stability control, but no ADAS
Sojitz G Auto Philippines, the official distributor of Geely vehicles in the Philippines launched the all-new 2022 Geely Emgrand late last week. The model is imported (CBU) from China.
Available in Comfort and Premium variants, prices of the Geely Emgrand in the Philippines start from PHP 798,000 (~RM 65k) to PHP 908,000 (~RM 74k).
These prices put the Emgrand right smack into the hotly-contested B-segment sedan category, squaring up against rivals like the Honda City (PHP 848,000 or ~RM 69k to PHP 978,000 or ~RM 80k) and Toyota Vios (1.5-litre models from PHP 911,000 or ~RM 75k to PHP 970,000 or ~RM 79k).
Both variants are powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that does 102 PS at 5,600 rpm and 142 Nm from 4,000 rpm to 4,800 rpm. A CVT transmission comes as standard fitment.
The entry-level Comfort variant offers halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights, 15-inch wheels, black fabric upholstery, 8-inch infotainment display, rear air-conditioning vents, and electric parking brake (EPB).
Stepping up to the Premium variant gets you LED headlights, 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, two-tone blue-and-white leather-suede upholstery, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and sunroof.
Safety-wise, all variants of the 2022 Geely Emgrand are fitted with dual airbags up front, ABS with EBD, as well as traction control and stability control. The Premium variant adds side and curtain airbags, bumping the airbag count to 6. It also adds a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, and speed-sensing auto door lock.
Body colours for the Philippines-spec Emgrand include Dark Blue, Dark Grey, Gold, Proud Teal, and White.
What about Malaysia?
Closer to home, sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the Geely Emgrand will be the basis for a brand-new Proton sedan.
However, the new sedan won't be arriving so soon. A debut in 2023 or 2024 is more likely.
Although we know that the Emgrand will be the next Proton sedan, it remains to be seen which Proton sedan it will replace. The Emgrand-based sedan could replace the Proton Persona, or the now-discontinued Proton Preve.
