Chinese EV giant, BYD officially makes its debut in Indonesia with a ceremonial launch of the brand and 3 models β BYD Seal, BYD Atto 3, and BYD Dolphin. Prices for the models have not been announced but pre-bookings are open and BYD Indonesia will be organizing roadshows around Jakarta in the coming months.
"Indonesia is one of the active countries in adopting trends, including initiatives to reduce emissions through the use of electric vehicles,β said Eagle Zhao, President Director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia.
He continued, βThe Indonesian government is also very responsive to support this development with issued regulations. We see this as a positive step, and with our technological innovation, BYD wants to contribute to shaping societal behaviour as part of the new energy ecosystem.β
The three BYD models will be fully imported (CBU) from China and the Chinese EV maker plans to open at least 50 dealers throughout Indonesia by the end of the year. BYD is also looking to invest USD 1.3 billion (RM 6.13 bil) to set up a manufacturing facility in the archipelago according to Indonesiaβs Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto.

The BYD Dolphin and BYD Atto 3 are available in Malaysia and have similar specs to their Indo equivalents. The following are the prices and variants of the Dolphin and Atto 3 in Malaysia:

- Dynamic Standard - RM 99,900
- Premium Extended - RM 124,900
- BYD Atto 3
- Standard - RM 149,800
- Extended - RM 167,800
The BYD Seal, meanwhile, was previewed last month and Malaysian distributor, Sime Darby Beyond Auto has begun taking orders with an expected launch in February.

Just like in its neighbours Thailand and Malaysia, EV sales in Indonesia have also seen growth in 2023. According to Gaikindo sales data, 17,051 EVs were sold around the archipelago, a 70% jump compared to 2022 figures (10,327 units). BYDβs entry could probably contribute to another spike in Indonesian EV sales in 2024.
