China's GAC comes ahead with solid-state batteries, to power Hyper BEVs from 2025 with up to 1,000 km range

During the recent GAC Tech Day held on 12-April 2024, the Group unveiled its breakthrough all-solid-state battery technology slated for integration into Hyper-branded models by 2026, reports news portal Gasgoo.
The battery employs a 100% solid-state electrolyte, offering ultra-high energy density and robust intrinsic safety at the cell level. Transitioning "from the lab to large-scale production application," it signifies a significant milestone in battery technology.
With advancements in sponge silicon anode and solid-state cathode technologies, the new all-solid-state battery achieves an energy density exceeding 400 Wh/kg, marking a circa 50% increase in both volume and mass energy density compared to current liquid-state lithium-ion batteries. This enhancement enables a range of over 1,000 kilometers.
Moreover, the battery demonstrates remarkable safety features, enduring punctures, cuts, and temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius, said the carmaker.
Li Jin, the head of GAC Aion's battery R&D department, likened the development of this technology to "scaling Mount Everest", citing the need for innovations in materials, design, manufacturing, and integration. He highlighted the battery's superior energy density, inherent safety features, and wider operational temperature range.
At Auto Guangzhou 2023 last November, GAC Group unveiled its intention to integrate all-solid-state batteries into vehicles by 2026. In early February of this year, GAC Aion showcased progress in developing the Hyper solid-state battery, surpassing an energy density of 350 Wh/kg.
Previously, GAC Aion's laboratory completed trials for interface modification technology for solid-state batteries, revealing significant technological advancements. This breakthrough is anticipated to reduce battery life degradation by 50%, maintaining over 90% of its original capacity after 150 charging cycles.
