SAIC Motor-CP, a joint venture between SAIC Motor and Charoen Pokphand Group, and MG Thailand have announced the opening of their first electric vehicle (EV) battery plant. The plant is in the New Energy Industrial Park within Thailand's Chonburi province's Eastern Economic Corridor Special Zone.
Covering a 12-hectare area, the EV battery plant is equipped with the capacity to manufacture up to 50,000 units per year. The facility is divided into two key sections to ensure quality and precision in battery production.

The first section is dedicated to battery assembly, while the second section is reserved for rigorous battery standard testing. The facility is designed for domestic EV production, with an additional investment of THB 500 million (around RM 66 million). It focuses on manufacturing Cell-To-Pack (CTP) EV batteries using the innovative Rubik's Cube Battery technology.
Zhao Feng, President of SAIC Motor-CP, said, โWith the strength and growing opportunity for Thailandโs EV market, SAIC Motor Corporation and HASCO-CP realise the potential to become the production hub for electric vehicles for both domestic and international distribution especially among ASEAN countries.โ
SAIC's MG brand, which made its entry into the Thai EV market in 2019, has gained popularity among Thai consumers with over 18,000 units sold in the country.
Thailand has been a significant hub for automobile production in Southeast Asia due to its well-established industrial chain and strategic geographical advantages. With government investment incentives in place, the country is aiming to have EVs account for 30 percent of all vehicles produced in Thailand by 2030.
In the local context, SAIC Motor is represented by Maxus in Malaysia, with Weststar serving as the distributor. Weststar Maxus is gearing up for the launch of the fully electric Maxus Mifa 9 soon.
