Stellantis details its electrification shift towards ASEAN, targets global BEV sales of 5 million by 2030 01

Stellantis has outlined its plans for new mobility solutions, led by electrification, for the ASEAN region. The move will be spearheaded by the introduction of its STLA Medium platform to the region.

Unveiled globally in June 2023, the STLA Medium is a global BEV-by-design platform with a best-in-class range of 700 km, energy efficiency, embedded power and charging power.

The shift towards the region falls under its Dare Forward 2030 strategy and will see the carmaker pump in around RM 2 billion to introduce the STLA Medium platform. The platform enables Stellantis to produce multi-energy vehicles (BEV, ICE, MHEV) in the region which can result in local sourcing opportunities for local suppliers and manufacturers of over RM 5 billion within the next four years.

Simultaneously, the shift to electrification in the region would also unlock many new opportunities beyond manufacturing. This could include growth due to a local electrification ecosystem, including the local assembly of battery packs and related job opportunities, which stimulate local business and positively impact the economy.

“Stellantis’ ASEAN growth and expansion plans align with the company’s global commitment to achieve net carbon zero output by 2038 by reducing its environmental impact and promoting sustainability. A big part of our ASEAN plan centres around innovation that comes with the shift to electrification and technology. The potential of EVs is immense in ASEAN and we want to lead the expansion of electrification in this region. Producing EVs here in ASEAN includes the development and engineering of vehicles tailored to the specific needs of local consumers in this region,” said Daniel Gonzalez, Chief Operating Officer for ASEAN & General Distributors at Stellantis.

Part of those efforts include partnering with the Indonesian government and other Indonesian stakeholders as part of its localisation and upstream battery materials investment plan to support electrification. This includes an agreement with its business partner in Indonesia, Indomobil Group, to begin local assembly of Citroën EVs in 2024.

Back here in Malaysia, Stellantis acquired 100 percent ownership of the Gurun plant in Kedah in 2021. It established its India and Asia Pacific Regional HQ in Kuala Lumpur. Stellantis is evaluating the potential of the Gurun plant as a regional manufacturing hub to manufacture battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for domestic and export markets in ASEAN.

The plant currently produces Peugeot models including the 2008, 3008 and 5008, which are distributed to markets in the region including Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia.

Additional growth initiatives in the region include the establishment of a fully functional Regional Training Academy and Centre for competency-based upskilling in Product, Commercial and aftersales services, as well as forging business partnerships with local companies to develop new mobility solutions and services for the region.

The automaker aims to have over 75 BEVs and to reach global annual BEV sales of 5 million vehicles by 2030. Stellantis comprises the likes of Peugeot, Citroën, Ram, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and more.

“Better late than never.” Some despise it, others begrudgingly agree with it but he swears by it… much to the chagrin of everyone around him. That unfortunately stems from all of his project cars not running most of the time, which in turn is testament to his questionable decision-making skills in life. A culmination of many wrongs fortunately making a right; much like his project cars on the rare occasions they run, he’s still trying to figure out if another project car is the way to go.
