Your grandpa's Morris is the inspiration for this retro Wey YuanMeng

It seems retro is the new black in China as yet another retro-looking vehicle is about to hit the market. The Wey YuanMeng, directly translated as ‘round dream’ or it could also be translated to dream come true, is Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) luxury arm, Wey’s, first venture into retro designs.

At a glance, the YuanMeng’s overall look strongly reminds one of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. If you guys remember, Chrysler released the PT Cruiser back in the early 2000s as part of the company’s nostalgia series.

So, the car looks both classic and modern at the same time to fit in with the times while still offering buyers a glimpse of nostalgia. However, unlike the PT Cruiser, GWM has thrown caution to the wind and just created the YuanMeng to look like it would fit nicely into the ‘30s and ‘40s eras.

Taking centre stage is the YuanMeng’s massive retro horizontal chrome grille, the grille is complemented by a protruding bonnet that is iconic of cars in the ‘30s and ‘40s.

To add to the retro look, the YuanMeng also gets round headlamps with chrome rings around it and a classic chrome front bumper, complete with fog lamps.

More retro features decorate the side such as the chrome oval side mirrors and the chrome insert on the front fender that is common on cars of the era. Even the chrome plate rims are in theme with the era.

The fastback rear end features classic round tail lamps as well as a matching chrome bumper. To make sure the YuanMeng is still a practical vehicle, GWM has added a hump of sorts on the tailgate so the car will still have a functional boot space.

The retro look continues on the inside. Not only does it feature a steering wheel designed to fit the era, but it also gets circular air-conditioner vents finished in chrome.

But the car is not entirely devoid of modern tech, GWM has done a good job camouflaging the digital screens, the YuanMeng gets three including the fully digital instrument cluster, into the dashboard.

Other than that, even the seats were designed to fit the era of cars the YuanMeng drew inspiration from.

Measuring 4,830 x 1,995 x 1,725 mm in length, width, and height with a wheelbase of 2,915 mm, the YuanMeng is not a compact car, it is just slightly smaller than the Honda Accord.

The retro YuanMeng will be a hybrid vehicle, however, not much information has been revealed other than the engine will be a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 156 PS. The YuanMeng will also be made available in two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive guises.
