lexus number plate Q&A Review

Why do UK people prefer used cars?

The cars I like are, when new, into “Veblen goods” territory. A “Veblen good” is an odd thing - it’s one where it actually finds increased demand as the price goes up. They are normally luxury goods, to the extent that part of the purpose of buying one is to “signal ones wealth to others.” In the UK, cars have number plates that show their age. So, it’s very obvious to the observer that they are looking at someone who only has a 15 year old Lexus, not a new one. That doesn’t show off wealth in the same way. I’m not interested in displaying my wealth. I’m interested in being in a car that is unbelievably comfortable whether I’m sitting in the front or the back. So I wait until the Veblen premium has fallen away.

What is the best license plate (vanity plate) you've ever seen?

While I did not see this vanity plate, my boss did one day, many years ago. He walks into work and says he just saw the best vanity plate ever, but we won’t get it. Granted, we were mostly a bunch of dumb high school or college students, those of us that made it into college, that is. We ask him what it said and he says: This picture is from an eBay auction, we are in NYC and it was most likely a NYC plate. We all sit around thinking about what this means, and no one can get it. About 5 minutes later I go up to him, and I am like “It’s 69!”. Yes, in Roman numerals LXIX means 69. My boss was shocked I figured it out, but I have always loved Roman numerals. Now SOME people might think this could be a good vanity plate for a Lexus, but this was before the time of Lexus. I just wish I had a pic of what he saw!

Is Lexus better than Toyota?

Is Lexus better than Toyota? It depends on how you define ‘better’. I will say that a Lexus is a ,nicer, car than a Toyota. It is certainly a more ,expensive, car than a Toyota. All things being equal, ,nicer, and ,more expensive, should equal ,better,. But, all things never seem to be equal in the real world. Many states have a vehicle registration fee formula that takes into consideration the value of the vehicle. If you’re having a hard time making ends meet as it is, a lower cost Toyota will hurt you a lot less when it comes time to renew your license plates than a more costly Lexus will. Most insurance companies set their premiums, in part, on the cost to repair a vehicle. The parts for a Lexus and the repair procedures for a Lexus will generally cost more than those of a Toyota. If you’re watching your dollars closely, then the lower insurance premiums for a Toyota, like the registration fee, probably the Toyota a ‘better’ car for you. If you buy cars that are a number of years old and well-used by the time you get them, a Toyota will probably be a better buy since there are fewer things that can go wrong with it. If you are a salesperson who drives to meet with clients, especially selling insurance, a Toyota is probably better than a Lexus. One mistake is to show up in too nice of a car. Potential clients will think that you sell overpriced product with ridiculous commissions or else you’re some kind of fraudster who’s there to rip them off, and naturally the won’t want to spend their money on what ,you’re, offering. Show up in a modest car and this usually isn’t a problem. If you operate a car professionally, such as delivering pizza or the like, you’ll be better off having a cheaper car that’s easier and less costly to repair. If you operate in austere conditions that make your car always covered with dust or mud, you’ll probably not feel so bad about if you’re driving a Toyota rather than a Lexus.

People who drive a lot, what are your tips and tricks for the road?

Step 1. Look after you. However long it takes to get there, is however long it takes to get there. 2 or 3 minutes gained by “speeding” or taking risks won’t make any difference at all. Enjoy your drive, stay calm and don’t let anything stress you out. It’s a lot easier to drive all day, than it is to drive all night. Start your long trips before dawn to put in the most amount of miles in any drive without having to stop and sleep. (Depending where you are in the world and what time of year it is, its also likely that there are more hours of daylight than darkness) Driving at night (especially in America) is a lot more difficult than driving during the day. Roads are poorly lit (if at all), cars tend to have very poor quality lights and in cases where there is on-coming traffic, their lights tend to be blinding because the users tend to aim them higher (likely due to their poor quality and visibility from their position!) Always have a bottle of water with you. Drink it, often. (Obviously on longer drives, make sure to take more than 1 bottle or at least a large water container so you can stop and refill your bottle.) On long drives, take frequent bathroom breaks, even if you don’t actually need the bathroom. The change of scenery and activity helps keeps your body active. I like parking up and going for a 10 minute walk at least every 3 hours on long trips. Blink… a lot. When you focus on a screen or a road, you blink rate tends to naturally decrease leading to sore tired eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink a few times. Never go anywhere without your towel! (honestly, you’d be surprised how handy a hand towel is in a car or on a long drive!) Step 2: Look after your car/vehicle Make sure that your vehicle is well maintained and up to date with its service schedule. Check tire pressure and oil on a regular basis. Wash it on a regular basis. (Make sure to wash under the wheel arches and clean the wheels. You don’t need to use acid as many hand car washes and valets do to make it look good and shine, just clean off any dirt.) Listen to and feel how your vehicle behaves and responds. That way you will often know when something is going wrong, long before it gets really expensive and potentially life threatening. Make sure you know what to do if your vehicle breaks down or you get into an accident. (Who do you call? What information do you need to collect and from who? - Make up a card with a checklist and leave it in your vehicle somewhere accessible) If you carry jumper cables or a jump start kit, make sure that it is accessible if the vehicle has no power. (For example, I can’t put my jumper kit in the boot of my Lexus, because if there is no power, I couldn’t open the boot/trunk lid/door!) The main reason to carry a check list around with you, is because in the moment, you are likely to forget 1 or more of these things. All of which become very important, especially if you are contesting who actually caused the accident or if there is a lack of suitable signage on the road to warn you of likely danger. Crash checklist example: Check all involved vehicles for injuries. Call for ambulance if needed. Take pictures of your vehicle from all angles. Take pictures of all vehicles involved from all angles Take pictures of the road, (360 if possible) make sure to capture any nearby signs or traffic lights Note the exact location of the incident. (If possible take down co-ordinates from a GPS app on your phone) Note number plates of all involved vehicles Get names and numbers of all occupants of all involved vehicles - Including your own (If you can’t get names, at least get an occupant count and if possible gender) Call local highways authority / police if unsure who that is. If in a rental car, there should be a card already in the glove box with instructions and a phone number to call in case of an accident. Where appropriate, get copy of police report or local highways authority. (These guys will often show up sooner or later on any main highway/motorway even if you don’t call them yourself. - That doesn’t mean don’t call them. They should be your first call.) Try and get copies of any dash cam footage. P.S I do actually take all of my own advice, I am very rarely late by more than a couple of minutes (even when doing 600+ miles trips in 1 go). The key is to plan for “misadventures” (wrong turns, heavy unexpected traffic). If you get to your destination early because you left lots of wiggle room, you can listen to an audiobook (or read a book) until its time to do whatever you needed to do. Think of it as free time to chill and do your own thing.

Did you ever regret helping some stranger?

Unfortunately, YUP! I “use to” do the “Designated Driver” thing for people. Very often for strangers, or people I didn't know to well. My name and number were on lists with local clubs and bartenders…(basically, Uber for drunk people, no charge) It just so happened to be Veteran's Day, and I am a prior service United States Marine. I had picked up a group of people at the end of the night and the “gentleman” sitting in the front seat claimed to be veteran as well. Normally, I will NOT stop off anywhere on the way to their destinations…but, made an exception this time. Stopped at a gas station/convenience store to run in quickly to grab cigarettes for them. Then…what do ya know…off drove my vehicle! Which happened to be a Lexus RX350. The best part??? Not only am I a veteran…I am a “service-connected” Disabled Veteran and have DV license plates on my car…(the state I live in requires a rating of 100% disabled, in order to have those) I reported the theft immediately to the police department and was told they would get to it (NOT intending to be rude or nasty…just busy and being a low priority call) “when they had a chance”…basically, “Don't get your hopes up, or expect much” I explained that one of them claimed to be a veteran too…just like me! But…choose to steal a Lexus…from a disabled, female, Marine Corps veteran…on VETERAN'S Day…which happens to be the very day AFTER the Marine Corps Birthday! Then, I politely thanked the officer and VERY calmly added (as to NOT be perceived as threatening in nature) “I hope you all find him before I do!” (Ha! Ironically, I had my vehicle back the following morning…)

Why do Lamborghinis not have a front number plate?

The answer probably depends on what state or country you are referring to. Here in Texas front plates are required, yet enforcement is pretty weak. Mostly just an added thing you get ticketed for if you get pulled over for something else. Lots of people with expensive cars like the way they look better without the plate, are more concerned with vanity than following the letter of the law, and have the money to handle any ticket they happen to get from it. Thus, a pretty large portion of BMW, Tesla, Lexus, etc. are missing them. The owner of a Lamborghini would presumably take “concerned about the appearance of their car” and “has money to burn” to pretty extreme levels. I’d be pleasantly surprised if such a person around here bothered to install the front plate.
