How does a magnetorheological suspension actually work?

Magnetorheological dampers have an electronically controllable damping coefficient. So it is possible to electronically control its damping characteristics under various circumstances, in real-time. Magnetorheological fluids comprise of micro-scale ferromagnetic particles. With the application of magnetic field, the particles tend to form chains as shown below : Such chains tend to resist and restrict fluid motion. Thus it has a controllable yield stress and hence its damping characteristics can be controlled in real-time, using an electromagnet. Vehicle suspensions are usually designed with a compromise between comfort and road holding/handling. Low damping coefficients give a better comfort at the cost of road holding i.e. there is an increased variation in tire force, which is not desirable. Slightly higher damping coefficient give a better road grip but aren’t really comfortable. With controllable damping using MR dampers, this compromise gets removed, thus resulting in overall better performance.

From where can I get the detailed technical specification of a particular car's suspension system (must include damping ratio, spring stiffness coefficient, damping coefficient and other technical terms)?

You can't get it anywhere. It is kind of a trade secret. OEMs often benchmark competitors to acquire this kind of data but again that their property and confidential. Some third party agencies also do this benchmarking. However the sell the data and as an individual they won't entertain your request in this regard. The problem is that one needs a complicated experimental setup to measure such parameters. Damping ratio, spring stiffness, damping coefficient, etc all vary depending on the loading frequency and in extreme cases the amplitude. So shakers are used to load the part in an experimental setup. The input given is usually a sine sweep or random sweep an the output data is obtained from which these curves are processed. In short, it is a significant investment to do such an experiment. Nobody will handover such data for free.

What are over damped, critically and under damped systems?

Lets start with a scenario….. Suppose there are 3 persons P1, P2 and P3 as marked in the figure. All have to reach the center of the blue ring ( ,Steady State Value,). Now to complete the errand all three get into 3 different airplanes : Over damped (O), Critically damped (C) and Under damped(U). Now I would like you to pay attention to both the time and displacement axis considering the displacement axis as the vertical distance of planes from ground. Over Damped,: The O airplane takes off very slowly and hence has a very high value of ,Rise Time, as compared to other two systems. Rise time being defined as time taken to reach the level of center of the blue denoted by dotted line in the figure. Also due to some navigational anomalies it never reaches its destination and stays below the required height. Critically Damped,: The C plane is better than the O and almost (asymptotically) reaches the target and that too at a better speed and less time than O. Under Damped,: The U plane pilot is very enthusiastic and in its excitement goes at very high speed hence goes pass the target and that too in very less time (Rise Time) as compared to other two planes. Releasing his mistake it again comes back but again enthusiasm kicks in and he again passes the destination this time in opposite direction. This process continues until a specific time until he is settled. We call this time as the ,Settling Time, and after this time he finally reaches his destination. So in our little story the three paths takes by the planes represents the 3 time responses of Second order system when subjected to unit step response. Main difference lies in their, Rise Time, and ,Settling time, and final steady state value achieved which dictate various design parameters in control systems. Try getting on contact directly with Whirlpool or Frigidaire and they *may* point you to their suppliers or stats. It may be enough of a trade secret that you would have to directly order the parts and test them. As far as I am aware, that type of number set is not just floating around.
