The GWM Pao is Great Wall Motors' attempt in shifting buyers' attention from rivals like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. It's been making great progress in that regard - it's now among the top-10 best-selling pick-up trucks in both Australia and New Zealand.
With a month-on-month increase of 50%, VFACTS data saw the GWM Pao crowned as the best-selling 4x4 pick-up truck in Australia, and the brand sits on 8th place in cumulative pick-up truck sales there.
For the record, the Pao sold 627 units in April alone (up from 418 in March) - outselling the Toyota Land Cruiser by 45 units.
Meanwhile over in neighbouring New Zealand, the model moved into the top-10 list with a year-on-year sales increase of a whopping 186% in April.
A 1-tonne-class pick-up truck, the Pao is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel mill making 163 PS and 400 Nm, paired to ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.
The Pao range packs in a healthy list of kit, with all variants sold in Australia coming with keyless entry and push start button, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear-differential lock, full LED head- and tail lights, as well as a class-exclusive damped tailgate with a fold-out tailgate step.
Safety is also rather comprehensive, and the Pao comes with ADAS features like autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition system.
