  • Malaysia-bound Proton S50 could get turbocharged mill
  • 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated mill isn't suitable for Malaysian highways
  • Can this sway you away from the City and Vios?

Long live the sedan, as a spyshot of a new Proton sedan has emerged on social media. Widely believed to be called the Proton S50 - sedan version of the X50 -, Proton is eyeing the lucrative B-segment sedan market with this new sedan.

The Proton S50, as what some folks are calling it, is said to be based on the all-new, fourth-generation Geely Emgrand.

In markets where the Emgrand is currently sold in, like China and Philippines, the sedan is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre 4-pot engine. In China, the engine produces 114 PS and 147 Nm, but over in the Philippines, the engine does 102 PS and 142 Nm. Drive is routed to the front wheels via a CVT transmission.

This blue-on-white interior looks dope, but don't hold your breath for its arrival here

Upon its arrival in Malaysia, we speculate that the Proton S50 may not be fitted with this naturally-aspirated mill, but with a turbocharged unit instead. The Proton X50’s turbocharged 3-pot (150 PS, 226 Nm) could be a viable option.

Two main variants of the 1.5-litre engine, bound to play a bigger role in Proton's line-up

There are several possibilities to as why the Malaysian-spec Proton S50 could get the turbocharged mill and one of the key factors is the fact that the naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre unit doesn't have enough pulling power for the car's 1.2-tonne kerb weight.

This puts the Proton S50's power-to-weight ratio at a disadvantage against rivals like the Toyota Vios and Honda City, never mind larger sedans. It tips the scale at 1,250 kg, and with the engine outputting 102 PS, that translate into a power-to-weight ratio of 82 PS/tonne.

Power-to-weight ratio
Model PS/tonne
Geely Emgrand 82
Toyota Vios 93
Honda City 106
Proton Persona 90

For context, that far less than rivals like the City (106 PS/tonne) and Vios (93 PS/tonne). 82 PS/tonne also puts the Emgrand behind the model it’s supposed to replace, the Proton Persona  (90 PS/tonne).

Dimensions wise, the Geely Emgrand is longer and wider than the Proton Persona, though its wheelbase is identical to the now-discontinued Proton Preve.

Dimensions
Model Emgrand Persona Preve
Length (mm) 4,638 4,362 4,543
Width (mm) 1,822 1,722 1,786
Height (mm) 1,460 1,554 1,524
Wheelbase (mm) 2,650 2,555 2,650

We should also add that one shouldn’t get too hung up on whether the new Proton S50 is a B- or C-segment car. Like the Perodua Ativa, the Proton S50 is a new generation value-added package model that straddles between traditional segments.

If the Proton S50 is priced right, could it sway potential buyers away from rivals like the Vios and City?

Oops... Something broke.

Just like the rest of the world, Malaysia isn’t immune to the SUV fever. Over the past 5 years, sales of SUVs have consistently been rising and our 2 local brands couldn’t simply ignore the hype. Proton got the ball rolling with the launch of the Proton X70 in 2018, the first new model introduced following its acquisition by China’s Geely Holdings. Honda Cars Philippines (HCPI) launched the all-new sixth-generation 2023 Honda CR-V in the country in September and since then 400 units have been delivered to customers. Two engine choices are offered in the archipelago which consists of 2 turbocharged petrol variants (V, VX AWD) and a sole hybrid variant (RS e:HEV). Breaking down those 400 units to specifics, Top Gear Philippines asked HCPI how many bought the most powerful (and most expensive) variant. According to representatives, most Filip
Before the launch of its SUVs, Proton’s sedans have often been a favourite among Malaysians ever since the first Saga rolled off the plant nearly 40 years ago. Even today, the Saga is Proton’s best-selling model but while the 2023 Proton S70 might not overtake its entry-level sibling in sales, things definitely look promising. The Proton S70 is the Malaysian Thundercat’s first all-new sedan model in 7 years since the Iriz-based Proton Persona. Though it is a lot closer to C-segment sedans like t
