![Strong demand for Proton and Perodua models, Malaysia's October new car sales is up 10% 01]()
In times of uncertainty, Malaysians are increasingly looking to affordably priced models from Proton and Perodua. Strong demand for national make models is the reason behind a 10 percent jump in October 2023’s new car sales, says MAA (Malaysia Automotive Association).
A total of 74,896 units were sold in October 2023, versus September’s 68,156 units.
This is the third time this year that Malaysia’s monthly new car sales crossed the 70,000 units mark. October’s number is also the second highest this year, behind March’s 78,849 units, when manufacturers were rushing to meet the cutoff date for sales tax exemption.

Year-to-date sales currently stand at 646,840 units, up 12 percent compared to the same 10-month period last year.
Proton had earlier announced that its October 2023’s sales reached 12,772 units, up 4.4 percent from the previous month. Cumulative sales from January to October totaled 129,604 units, up 12.3 percent from the same 10-month period in 2022.
UMW has yet to announce its numbers for Perodua.
