Before the launch of its SUVs, Proton’s sedans have often been a favourite among Malaysians ever since the first Saga rolled off the plant nearly 40 years ago. Even today, the Saga is Proton’s best-selling model but while the 2023 Proton S70 might not overtake its entry-level sibling in sales, things definitely look promising.
The Proton S70 is the Malaysian Thundercat’s first all-new sedan model in 7 years since the Iriz-based Proton Persona. Though it is a lot closer to C-segment sedans like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla Altis in terms of dimensions, prices are likely to be against non-local B-segment rivals like the Toyota Vios and Honda City.
Built on the B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) platform, the S70 is based on the Geely Emgrand but it isn’t just a simple badge swapping that has been done for the Malaysian sedan.
Underneath the hood is a 1.5-litre turbocharged MPI (port fuel injection) 3-cylinder unit that produces 150 PS and 226 Nm. This engine is shared with the non-Flagship variant of the Proton X50 and is never offered for its Chinese donor which is only available with a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre 4-cylinder (127 PS/152 Nm).
The S70 is offered in 4 variants – Executive, Premium, Flagship, and Flagship X. Prices for Proton's latest sedan offering will be announced later though booking orders are open at all Proton showrooms nationwide.
The Teal Bayou Green colour that is shown in Adrian’s first impressions video of the S70 is only offered on the Flagship variants. Speaking of the video, check it out below to see if the S70 is another winner for Proton.
