Thanks to Bermaz, Mazda's FY2024 sales surged 20% in Malaysia; Highest in ASEAN

Under Bermaz Motor, Malaysia is the only Mazda distributor / national sales centre in Southeast Asia to close the Hiroshima-based automaker’s financial year ending March 2024 (FY2024) on a positive note.

Although Mazda closed its FY2024 account books with its highest ever operating profit, surging 76 percent to reach 250.5 billion Yen (~RM 7.63 billion), most of the success was attributed to the USA, Europe, and China.

Southeast Asia is a headache for Mazda. Casual readers of business news would have the impression that Mazda is in trouble in China, because of intense competition from Chinese electric cars, but this is incorrect.

Mazda CX-50 Hybrid

Mazda’s sales in China accelerated by a double-digit 15 percent, which is no small feat. The newly launched CX-50 hybrid and updated CX-5 are very well received in China, with sales reaching 97,000 units.

Meanwhile, sales in Southeast Asia declined 7 percent, to 72,000 units. The biggest decline was in Thailand, which saw sales dropping by 42 percent. Changes in financial lending guidelines had negatively impacted sales of the BT-50 pick-up truck. The ageing Mazda 2 is also losing ground to the newer Toyota Yaris and Honda City Hatchback.

Vietnam, another major Southeast Asian market for Mazda, saw zero growth, with sales flat lining at 29,000 units.

Mazda CX-8 is Malaysia's No.1 selling 3-row seat D-SUV, ranking ahead of the Proton X90

Bermaz Motor however, recorded a 20 percent increase in sales, reaching 19,000 units. Note that the figures are for Mazda’s financial year, not calendar year, covering April 2023 to March 2024.

This also means that Bermaz now ranks ahead of Mazda Thailand in the region's hierarchy of importance. With Malaysia's higher contribution to Mazda, Bermaz customers can benefit from potentially higher investment and resources allocated by Mazda Motor, which would in turn result in a better ownership experience for Mazda customers here.

Mazda’s best-selling model in Malaysia is the CX-5, followed closely by the CX-30. The Mazda CX-8 is third. It's the No.1 selling 3-row seat D-segment SUV, ranking ahead of the Proton X90.

All three models are locally assembled (CKD) at Mazda Malaysia’s (a joint venture between Mazda Motor and Bermaz Auto) own facility within the Inokom manufacturing campus in Kulim.

Toyota, Honda, and Mazda have had a good year. All three closed their financial years ending March 2024 (FY2024) with record high profits. Mitsubishi Motors, however, didn’t have a very good year. With a limited product line-up and over-reliance on 4x4 vehicles, it was very vulnerable to changes in market conditions. Mitsubishi Motors’ documents call its recently closed financial year as FY2023, but keep things consistent with other Japanese manufacturers, we will call it FY2024. Total sales for
Following yesterday's news of the supposedly disease-curing, lifespan-extending Skyworth EV6 and its purported arrival to Malaysia, a few right-hand drive (RHD) units have been spotted in Thailand. Car2Day shared photos of a white car, offering quite a close look at the newest Chinese battery electric vehicle to sail into the ASEAN region. The car haven't got one shred of camo on it, and curiously it's named the Fregata Ariel 8; instead of the Skyworth EV6. This, apparently, has been a thing wit
Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI) has announced a recall for 420 units of the Chery Omoda 5, to inspect the rear axle. This follows a similar announcement in Malaysia on 30-April, involving 600 locally assembled (CKD) Malaysian market cars produced at the Inokom plant in Kulim. The 420 units recalled in Indonesia were locally assembled at contract manufacturer PT Handal Indonesia Motor’s plant in Bekasi. Oddly, the announcement came two weeks after Chery Sales Indonesia's denial on 2-May 2024 that the

Initially showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon expo in January, these enhancements are now available for order in selected markets. This kit features a striking front lip spoiler, side sills, corner intakes on the front fascia, and a rear under spoiler topped off wit
Looking at the Smart #3 in person, you might be forgiven for thinking that it is essentially a Smart #1 with a lower roofline. After all, both the #1 and #3 are built on the same platform and share the same power outputs. Smart Malaysia recently invited the Malaysian media to the Proton test track in Shah Alam for an exclusive first look and driving impression of the Smart #3. Two variants of the upcoming battery electric vehicle (BEV) were tested around the track – the Premium and Brabus varian
