Easy as it seems to shift into and out of gear, AT or automatic transmission allows a starter to Shove to Drive and go. For petrolheads who indulging in the pleasure of control, however, manual gearboxes could provide the unique experience they want. Recently, Volkswagen announced that it has developed a new and most advanced manual transmission named MQ281.

The new gearbox is with better transmission efficiency and said to reduce carbon emissions by 5 grams per kilometer, and the gearbox will be used in Passat. 

The new gearbox is designed according to the 2.5 shaft concept, which boosts a high gear ratio (up to 7.89) purportedly. Such design could ensure the handling performance, especially for some large vehicles or high-load vehicles, the low speed of the engine and the high gear ratio could play a particularly fuel-saving trick.

“Here we employed virtual development methods,” says Helmut Göbbels. “This enabled us to design a completely new oil conduction system. Using a variety of oil conduction measures, we are able to achieve a uniform and optimum lubrication of gear wheels and bearings, reducing the amount of lifetime oil required to just 1.5 litres.” 

Production of the new gearbox will carry out at existing VW factories in Spain and Argentina. The updated Passat will be the first car to benefit from this technology. More VW models, from hatchbacks to SUVs, will benefit from this tech according to the official report.
