Though it's dropped the 'Impreza' name, make no mistake that the recipe remains the same in the all-new 2022 Subaru WRX that's now in Malaysia, and on display in Subaru Petaling Jaya off the Federal Highway.
Fully-imported (CBU) from Japan, Subaru Malaysia will offer both the WRX sedan and wagon (called the Levorg in other markets). Estimated prices for them are as follows:
There won't be a WRX STI in Malaysia because of one major factor...there isn't any to begin with. Subaru isn't making the tarted-up STI based on this generation's WRX, citing emissions regulations.
That said, this 'base' WRX isn't anything to cry over as well. Performance figures are a healthy 275 PS and 350 Nm from its FA24F 2.4-litre turbocharge 'boxer' four mill, and hey, you still have the 6-speed manual option.
Based on the Subaru Global Platform – SGP, which underpins everything from this to the XV to the Forester – the WRX comes with the company's famed Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, as well as Active Torque Vectoring.
Like most of Subaru Malaysia's offerings, standard kit on the WRX is pretty rich. There's automatic-levelling LED headlights, full-LED tail lights, 18-inch wheels, as well as a keyless entry and start system.
11.6-inch screen, SI drive mode
As for the interior, the instrument cluster is analogue with a 4.2-inch multi-info display between them – there's only one big screen here, and that's the vertical 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen.
It's got Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and shows a whole lot of info, including controls for the dual-zone air-cond.
The six-speeder variant makes do with a manual driver's seat, and that's a telltale clue about what's different between this and the CVT variant. The extra RM 10k you pay doesn't just net you the gearbox; it also scores you an electric parking brake (EPB) with auto hold as well as SI drive (Subaru Intelligent Drive) modes (Sport and Intelligent).
If you want the 10-way power-adjustable seat, rear air-cond vents, as well EyeSight ADAS, then these are paywalled to the CVT variant only. For the most part the features between the WRX and WRX Wagon CVT are shared, but the longer car adds an 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat.
Aftersales and warranty
Subaru Malaysia backs the WRX line-up with a 5-year/100,000 km warranty, and while prices quoted are still estimates, bookings for the model are already open.
