Come 2035, one can no longer buy a new internal combustion car in Canada. The country joins a growing list of nations that are now increasingly embracing electric vehicles. Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced that from that point onwards, only zero-emission vehicles will grace showrooms and new car dealerships.

Interestingly, the ban appears to cover only cars and light-duty trucks (like the Ford F-150 there), but not heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles. According to Reuters, investments and regulations will help ease this transition for automakers.

Canada also plans to have smaller targets for 2025 and 2030 that will set the stage for the large transition. Ultimately, Canada's goal is to reach zero-emission status by 2050. This won't be easy, especially considering EV infrastrucure for such a country with such a large land mass.

At present, only 3.5% of new vehicles sales go to EV segment, as reported by Reuters. So yes, Canada has a lot of work to do. Even so, they've a head start on the USA, where EV sales account for only 2% of new vehicle sales.

Currently, Europe leads the world in this metric at 10%, followed by China at 5.7%. Anyhow, let's hope Canada has a properly-planned and realistic roadmap to reach its target by 2035.
