BYD's JV with Mercedes-Benz, Denza D9 DM-i previewed in Thailand; 1.5-litre turbo PHEV as BEV alternative

BYD is previewing its Denza D9 DM-i plug-in hybrid (PHEV) MPV in Thailand at the ongoing Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS 2024), as part of its growing range in the country that goes beyond the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) that they are usually known for.
This D9 DM-i extends BYD's PHEV portfolio within the country, as the Seal U DM-i PHEV SUV is also set to be offered to the Thai market. In fact, the D9 DM-i's appearance completes its Thai line-up, as the D9 BEV was announced there at last year's iteration of BIMS.
Specs-wise, this 4-seater D9 (also available as a 7-seater elsewhere) measures 5,250 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, and 1,920 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,110 mm. For comparison, the 2024 Toyota Alphard measures 5,010 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,950 mm tall, sitting on a 3,000 mm wheelbase.
Since the model previewed is the most powerful all-wheel drive version, combined output from its 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and 40 kWh lithium-ion battery is 401 PS and 681 Nm.
The slightly relaxed NEDC test cycle pins the D9 DM-i to have an all-electric range of 180 km, and a claimed fuel consumption figure of 6.2-litres/100 km.
Like the Seal U DM-i, the Mercedes-Benz co-developed D9 also supports DC fast charging. Details on its capacity are not shared just yet, but the Chinese market model supports up to 80 kW DC fast charging.
Other features include a full suite of Level 2 ADAS, and BYD's properietory DiSus-C adaptive suspension system.
Prices for the Denza D9 DM-i for Thailand have not been announced, though in China it ranges from RMB 329,800 to RMB 439,800 (~RM 217k to ~RM 288k), cheaper than the BEV range that spans RMB 389,800 to RMB 459,800 (~RM 255k to ~RM 301k).
