Confirmed: New generation Toyota Hilux to launch in 2025 - To add 200 km PHEV variant, BEV too 01

Current generation Toyota Hilux GR Sport, Australian market specifications

An all-new generation Toyota Hilux will be launching in 2025, reports Australia’s CarsGuide, quoting Toyota Australia's VP of Sales and Marketing, Sean Hanley, who said "You'll have to wait until '25."

Australia is the second biggest right-hand drive market for the Toyota Hilux, after Thailand, where Australian market Hiluxes are made.

No further details were shared, understandably, but the possibility of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant was discussed.

Adding a Hilux PHEV variant may be necessary for the Australia market, which is proposing a New Vehicle Efficiency Standards (NVES). Under the proposed draft, diesel-powered pick-up trucks with CO2 emissions exceeding 199 g/km will be penalized AUD 100 for every gram above the limit.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });

The proposal, which is essentially an additional carbon tax, is a controversial one in farming-heavy Australia – where many locals rely on reliable pick-up trucks to cover the vast expanse of land there. Many manufacturers say they have the technology to meet the proposed limits, but consumers won’t like the higher prices.

Regardless of whether NVES is approved or not, Toyota is working on a 200 km electric-only range Hilux PHEV.

“Of course we are (developing a Hilux PHEV). And so that to us would represent two things. It's practical (and) it can do things that the customer wants it to do,” said Hanley.

Toyota Australia already sells a 48V mild-hybrid version of the current generation Hilux. Meanwhile, Toyota Thailand has already confirmed that a fully electric Hilux BEV (battery electric vehicle) will be produced there by end-2025.

"The Hilux (BEV) could be ready by the end of next year," said Noriaki Yamashita, President of Toyota Motor Thailand last month in an interview with Reuters.

Prototype Hilux BEV

The Hilux BEV referred to here will almost certainly be a new generation model. Toyota has produced a small number of prototypes of Hilux BEV, based on the current generation model, but these are not for sale. Instead, it’s for real-world durability testing with shared taxi operators in Thailand, and logistics vehicles for CP Group, owner of 7-11 and Makro stores in Thailand.

The current generation Hilux was first launched in Thailand in May 2015, so it’s reasonable to expect the soon-to-be 10-year old Hilux to be replaced by 2025.

In Malaysia, where the Hilux is locally assembled at UMW Toyota Motor’s Shah Alam plant, the model was launched in May 2016, one year after Thailand.

UMW Toyota Motor sells the outgoing generation Hilux at the below prices:

  • Hilux Single Cab 2.4 MT 4WD: RM 103,880
  • Hilux Double Cab 2.4E MT 4WD: RM117,880
  • Hilux Double Cab 2.4E AT 4WD: RM119,880
  • Hilux Double Cab 2.4V AT 4WD: RM145,880
  • Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD: RM158,880
  • Hilux Double Cab 2.8 GR Sport: RM169,080

Prices above are on-the-road without insurane, for private registration in Peninsular Malaysia.
