MITI: Only 2,020 EV chargers as of end-Feb, 10k target by 2025 remains 01

The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has reiterated its commitment to establishing 10,000 EV charging stations across the nation by 2025, despite only having approximately 2,020 in operation currently.

MITI Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz emphasized the Government’s dedication and described the target as aggressive but achievable, reports The Edge.

Adding that the EV chargers will be a key topic at the upcoming Malaysian National EV Steering Committee (NEVSC) meeting, Zafrul said, “So they said it’s moving fast enough, but let’s see because the next EV committee meeting will be discussing whether we should keep or drop the target. Industries players seem to be optimistic.”

Zafrul said there is a total of 2,020 EV charging stations (AC and DC) as of the end of February, up from approximately 1,400 EV chargers at the end of January 2024.

Back in October 2023, Zafrul stated that there were 1,246 units of public EV chargers in Malaysia, made up of 1,007 AC chargers and 239 DC chargers. He also added that the growth of charging points would be exponential and not linear.

Zafrul also highlighted the Government's support for the EV industry through incentives and initiatives aimed at achieving the set target.

This includes fast-tracking approvals and fostering collaboration with various entities, including the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Fire and Rescue Department, Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, and local authorities.

“We also have tax incentive(s)...it’s like chicken and egg, they want to see higher car sales, if not, (when) we have charging stations but no cars use it (to charge). So, it has to be hand in hand,” he added.

Highlighting the significance of Tesla's contribution to Malaysia's EV ecosystem. Zafrul commended the company for opening its newest, largest supercharging station in Gamuda Cove featuring 6 superchargers (DC) and 18 destination chargers (AC).

To date, Tesla has installed 36 superchargers and 55 destination chargers across Malaysia, and in collaboration with local companies resulted in another 1,300 home charging installations. Tesla plans to extend its charging network to key locations such as Kuantan, Penang, Putrajaya, and Kuala Lumpur in the coming quarter.

The government also ensures that at least 30 percent of Tesla fast chargers built in the country are accessible to all, irrespective of the car brand.

Passion finally lead to formal training in Mechanical Engineering. Instead of the bigger picture, he obsesses with the final drive ratio and spring rates of cars and spends the weekends wondering why a Perodua Myvi is so fast.
